Going to visit Ann

My friends and I braved the cold and got student tickets to the game this weekend.  None of us have been to Ann Arbor before so we don't know a lot of things and have some questions.  We're all 21 so are there any "Penn State" bars in the area?  Also is there any single area with a good concentration of Penn State tailgates on game day?  And what should we expect from the home fans out there, they have a reputation but I know that we do too and I don't think we are as bad as people say, do they meet their reputation or are they (like us) not as bad as people say?  Anything you guys have to say will be appreciated.  Thanks.

Really?

I’ve heard you should wear a condom at all times. Ann Arbor is such a whore, that VD is actually transmitted through the air there. Scary stuff.

no joking guys, seriously. bring your party hats, if you know what I mean

the walls practically drip with VD, too, and don’t drink the water: VD.

Ann Arbor is a whore

But seriously, UM fans are the scourge of the Earth.

Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor lived up to her billing as a whore when I was there. Good luck and watch your back. We got pelted with beer in the parking lot.

Yeah, I killed a man with a trident!

Brick, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you’re probably wanted for murder.

Was there in ‘02 or ’03 which ever year was the Tony Johnson ruled out debacle… we had a pretty good time. There’s a decent bar there called Touchdown club or Touchdown something… Friday night it was completely dominated by PSU fans. We ended up going back there on Saturday and it was much more crowded with scum… Pretty fun though…

Tailgated was decent too. The Stadium is interesting… We were walking right next to the morning of the game and had no idea it was the stadium… When you’re outside it’s not very high. The field and close to have the seats are underground… restrooms in the stadium were the coolest part about it… it’s basically walls and you just walk, find a wall and piss on it…

We had a pretty good time with no problems…

Touchdown cafe

On South U. I spent at least 10 sundays a year there watching steeler games, back in the pre-sunday ticket days.

Strength in Numbers

I went out there in 2007. I was really surprised by how many PSU tailgates we saw. Just find an area with a bunch of PSU fans and park there. Avoid areas with a large concentration of young Wolverine males and you’ll be fine. If you walk down Frat Row by yourself wearing an Evan Royster jersey, the chances of getting pelted with beer are pretty strong. These rules basically apply to any away game.

by BSD on Oct 22, 2009 9:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

New rule this year

On the golf course at least, you don’t get a choice of where to park, they just direct you to a spot. So, you may not be able to park near PSU fans. You should be fine on the golf course though.

I know a lot of schools do it, but I have a question

Doesn’t parking and tailgating on a golf course ruin it? Especially if there has been any amount of rain? Maybe the country club I worked at was just extra anal about stuff?

Yes.

That’s why I had such a hard time doing it two years ago. Avoid the clap greens. As for rain, I’m sure they will close the gates, just like what happened at PSU last weekend.

That's what she (Ann Arbor) said!

BA-ZING!

"Every player we have, someone—maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone—poured their life and soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world." - Joe Paterno

Been in 05 & 07

Had a great time both times and never had a problem with UM fans. In fact, many were very friendly. I park in the Ann Arbor Golf and Outing lot. Its $40 but definitely worth it, especially since it is right across from the stadium. There were a ton of Penn Staters there last time and tons more on the golf course. Many UM fans told me that PSU travels MUCH better than any other school including OSU.

Friday night, I would check out Scorekeepers. Both times I’ve been, there were more Penn Staters than UM.

Get some!

Married dudes need vicarious tale-telling. Answers to things like ‘how whorish was she?’ and ‘Does third base count as a score?’ should get you started.

Stay away from fights, tho; I have a feeling they’ll stand out disproportionately during recaps.

I've been there for 3 games so far (this weekend will be #4)

PSU ‘05, MSU ’06, and PSU ’07, and I’ve never had a problem with Michigan fans, in fact I’d say they were the nicest of any of the Big 10 fans I’ve come across (though Purdue fans have been pretty nice), and I actually usually hear mostly good things about Michigan fans. Snobby, for sure, but generally not dicks. Basic away game etiquette applies, though (don’t be obnoxious, and people will generally leave you alone). And as goes for anywhere (as Mike points out), if you are an away fan, stay away from large congregations of drunked young men, since even at Penn State (which generally has a reputation of having very friendly fans), you’ll get the idiots who think it is funny to throw beer cans and such.

As for parking, I’ve mentioned it a few times, but the high school across the street from the golf course is (I think) cheaper than the golf course, and just as close, and then you don’t have to feel guilty about parking on a friggen golf course.

For being that guy. That isn’t an “across” situation. It’s an “in” or “on”

“in” is not acceptible when it’s a Michigan fan.

Across in totally in play this week.

1) Across implies distance. Hats off to you my friend.
2) Who/what would it be across?

also, there are numerous fans I came across

so, yeah, more of a spraying motion, I guess…

No problems in '05 and '07?

Maybe that’s because Michigan won both those years. I will say this, getting outside the gate of the stadium took forever. People were packed like sardines taking two-inch steps at a time. Wolverine fans rubbing elbows with Nittany Lions. After a Wolverine win, the crowd is very jovial and in a good mood. But I imagine they’re not so friendly if you bump into them after a loss.

by BSD on Oct 22, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that is possibly true

but in ‘05 (I was actually sitting in the Michigan alumni section, and not with PSU), the fans around were all mostly1 nice, and congratulatory, even when it looked like PSU was going to win. They then congratulated us on a good game (which it WAS a good game, just a horrible outcome). I could see some of them acting differently with a PSU win, though that’s probably true of any fan base.

1 There was one specific lady who I was actually sitting right next to whom I asked (and the rest of the row) if we could sit at the opposite end (actually worse seats), which would allow us to sit right next to the Penn State section. This woman bitched that she wanted to sit in HER seats and wouldn’t move for us, so we had to stay put. Then about 5 minutes into the game she was complaining that she couldn’t see because everyone was standing up in front of her (ironically my friend and I were able to remain seated, so that the elderly couple behind us didn’t have to stand, because we had the aisle seats she refused to move into). I casually turned to her and said something like, “I’d offer you these seats with the great seated view we have, but I know how much you cherish your seats right there.”

She even got to the point where she rolled up a program and started poking a pair of Penn State fans who were about 2-3 rows in front of her (mind you, she had to reach through 1-2 rows of Michigan fans to reach them), yelling at them to sit down, as if THEY were the cause of everyone standing, despite only standing because the 5,000 people in front of THEM were standing. By halfway through the second quarter she left and never came back. I was not displeased.

Pioneer High School...

…is the name of the school. $30 to park a car. Ann Arbor Golf & Outing is directly across the street from the stadium (south) – $40. If it rains a good amount the grass at Pioneer and the golf courses may be closed. Many houses in the neighborhoods west and north of the stadium park cars on their lawns for varying prices.

yeah, I parked in a lawn one of the times I went

didn’t turn out too bad, but I could imagine getting stuck if some people don’t return to their cars right away.

I parked there

Good spot. Lot’s of PSU people there.

Not sure if this is the place to get the most exposure

but I have one extra ticket for the game, if anyone is interested. We got our tickets through the Chicago Alumni Association, and I’m pretty sure it was $80 (including the scholarship fund fee). I don’t have the tickets in hand (my friend from Chicago has them), so I’m not sure the section/seat yet, but I can find that out if anyone here is interested in going.

Thanks dude

This weekend’s not my weekend, but I’m definitely on a collision course to one day tailgate with both you and Ann.
