PSU WANTS IOWA TO WIN OUT

Maybe I am crazy but hear me out.  It is unrealistic to think PSU can jump back into the National Title race.  As a pre Big Ten grad, that is really all I care about.  Nonetheless, if PSU can run the table, the one loss to Iowa doesn't look so bad, if Iowa goes undefeated.

If Iowa goes undefeated and a couple of higher ups lose, (Florida and Alablam play each other, (Florida State will upset Florida, you heard it here first), maybe Texas gets picked one week, Cinncinati loses to WVU,  etc., then Iowa could move up in the BCS and wind up playing for a National Title.  If that happens and PSU is number 2 in the Big Ten, then we go back to the Rose Bowl for a rematch with USC wouldn't we?   Am I crazy?

The point is, I would rather be Big Ten Champs than go to the Rose Bowl as a consolation prize.

by BSD on Oct 23, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

Furthermore, if Iowa loses once and goes 11-1 and we are 11-1 as co-champs, then we’ll go to a different BCS bowl and I’m perfectly happy to see us in the Fiesta, Orange or Sugar Bowl.

Orange Bowl vs. Miami!

WE ARE.......PENN STATE!

by Nick7 on Oct 23, 2009 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In a scenerio of PSU wins out and Iowa goes to the Rose (at either 12-0 or 11-1), I think the most likely result is Fiesta Bowl versus Boise St or TCU with the second most likely situation being the Orange Bowl versus the ACC champ (which could certainly be Miami (FL)). We are virtually certain to not go to the Sugar.

I think we can all agree

a bowl game against a mid-major would be the absolute work case scenario. I honestly am cool with letting the chips fall unless that happens.

Ugh

Do I have to?

by BSD on Oct 23, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Two things wrong with that

One, if Pitt won the Big East, the Pitt trolls would be intolerable in the offseason. I hope Cincinnati pulls that out.

Two, I don’t think the Big East has a BCS bowl tie in. I know their champ is guaranteed a BCS bowl, but they are kind of like at at-large team. The ACC goes to the Orange, the PAC-10 and B10 have the Rose, the SEC goes to the Sugar, and the Big XII goes to the Fiesta. So if PSU were an at large bid, I don’t think they could possibly get matched up with the Big East champ.

are you telling me the only way we could play Pitt in a BCS game...

Yeah, I’d rather not play a mid-major in a primo bowl game, but I think it’s certainly possible. Of course, a lot can happen in the upcoming weeks which can shake up all the bowl scenarios.

Be a sweet way to send Bowden out!

Missed most of the game watching the next World Series Champion, the Yankees. Anyway, Florida State will have nothing to play for other than pride (although I think technically they are still in the running in the ACC) and a win over Florida would save the season and be a sweet way to send Bowden out.

I need people to stop

worrying about other teams’ schedules. The teams ahead all have tough games yet to play. More importantly, Penn State have some tough games left to play. Ultimately, it boils down to this simple statement – PSU wins out, PSU will be in a BCS bowl.

Also, there isn’t going to be a rematch with USC – the Pac-10 is much deeper than people realize. Washington won’t be USC’s only loss this season.

by ReadingRambler on Oct 23, 2009 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not Necessarily True

If Iowa loses one game and no one else above PSU falls below us, then Iowa will not play for the title and go to the Rose or other BCS bowl. If PSU doesn’t move up enough, they are on the outside looking in. That is why, with one loss to a highly ranked Iowa team, Iowa moving up moves us up.

by lhspsu on Oct 23, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think we'll get in with just one loss

There are five BCS bowls including the championship game. That’s ten spots. Six for each conference champion, and four at large. Figure the loser of the SEC championship game will get a spot, so there’s one. Then you’ll have the token Mid Major team like Boise State. That’s two spots, and still leaves two spots to be filled.

So we would be lumped in a group that would probably include the runner up teams of the Big XII, the Big East, the ACC, and the PAC-10. If USC doesn’t win the conference they would be an attractive pick. Oklahoma is out this year, so if Texas wins the Big XII championship game, who else in that conference stacks up against us? Miami might get in from the ACC if they finish strong, but I don’t think they would get selected over us.

If PSU finishes with just one loss and can claim wins over Michigan, Minnesota, Michigan State and Ohio State they’ll get in the BCS.

I'm not sure this can happen

by raimman on Oct 25, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely in the mix

I still think Oregon is the most likely pick right now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it all comes down to the final week – Civil War (Oregon-Oregon St.) on 12/3, then Arizona-USC on 12/5.

I’m also going to throw in Stanford as the team that can kill somebody’s chances at the Rose Bowl, or perhaps make that final week even more interesting. I don’t think they’ll be able to win the Pac-10, but with Oregon and USC still left on their schedule, they could make things more interesting.

Unrelialistic

Yes, it is. For starters, no bowl would want to set up PSU and Pitt — two teams from the same state, a matchup that has very limited national appeal. Bowls will prefer to get games that would interest a large number of people and generate good TV ratings.

Secondly, even if PSU/Pitt were a matchup a bowl might want, it’s unlikely that the mechanics of the bowl selection would lead to it. The Big East rep — especially a team with a small following like Pitt — is probably going to the Sugar which has the last pick where they’ll almost certainly play an SEC team. The only way that doesn’t happen is if the Fiesta (second to last pick) opts to take Pitt (or whomever the Big East rep is) over another potential at large. It’s possible that the Fiesta Bowl might lose (say) Texas to the championship, pick PSU as a replacement for them and then select a Big East champions Pitt — but I’m willing to bet they’d be more likely to take Boise St or TCU (whoever inevitably ends up as the non-BCS conference automatic qualifier) than Pitt to get a more “local” team as well as set up an intersectional matchup.

Just IMHO.

And that assumes Pitt would win the Big East over Cincinnati, which I don’t see happening anyway.

by Laaaaazzz on Oct 23, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

As poor a following at Pitt has

I don’t see how they are less attractive than a BSU or TCU…who also have weak followings. At least with PSU-Pitt you get a storyline, I feel like you turn off a lot of PSU fans with a mid-major selection.

But I agree it’s all questionable and probably pointless anyway because I’m not sure Pitt beats Cinci.

BSD

by Kevin HD on Oct 23, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think Pitt's following is as bad as you think

As far as Big East teams go they travel fairly well. They would sell their allotment to a BCS game against Penn State pretty easily.

The Fiesta Bowl was wierd; 1 That is a super expensive trip, 2 they were 8-4, they knew they sucked, 3 Utah? Who cares about them.

Combine it all up, and who wants to spend $3,500 to see your shitty team get their ass kicked by Utah?

Beat Michigan.

by jesse. on Oct 23, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

As far as Big East teams go they travel fairly well.

They are about middle of the pack. WVU, Louisville and Rutgers (in that order)seem to be at the top. Cinci and USF are at the bottom. Of course, “travelling well in the Big East” is sort of being like the tallest midget — there’s a reason that the Gator Bowl happily dropped them in order to get the 4th or 5th place team from the Big Ten. Pitt doesn’t really have a hardcore following that will travel in mass to bowl games, especially if the Steelers are in the playoffs at that time, diverting attention from their fickle “fans”.

And as an aside, the Fiesta Bowl would have to be the location again if PSU and Pitt were paired this season. Obviously, a more compelling matchup for Pitt, but still expensive and far.

by Laaaaazzz on Oct 23, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think Pitt is really less desirable than BSU or TCU in an overall sense — but I think that Pitt would be a less desirable for the Fiesta Bowl in this scenario given that those schools are closer than Pitt and that PSU/Pitt is a crappy regional matchup for a bowl. If the Fiesta has, say, Texas as their first team, they’d be more inclined to take a team like Pitt over BSU/TCU. IMHO.

It’s worth noting that the Sugar last year voluteered to take Utah over taking Cincinnati. Admittedly, though, Cinci has less of a following than Pitt.

If...

Iowa wins out and Penn State goes to the Rose bowl, do they still add 2009 to the list of years on the suites on the East side of Beaver Stadium — the so-called “Championship Years”.

by dontcallmescooter on Oct 23, 2009 1:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think...

The criteria is either an undefeated season or a “championship” season, be it Big Ten or MNC.

Based on that, we’d have to win the conference. It’s unclear whether we’d pull an Ohio State and claim a co-NC, but my guess is we would, since the more seasons we can put on the suites, the better it looks to recruits.

by jtw126 on Oct 23, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oops

And by “co-NC” I obviously mean “co-conference championship…”

by jtw126 on Oct 23, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

In that situation, we’ve won nothing, just gone to a nice bowl game. As said, the dates are for undefeated seasons or championships (national champs or conference champs). This would be neither.

Obviously, if we are co-champions with Iowa at 7-1 (i.e. we win out, Iowa loses once) then 2009 makes its way to the list.

If Iowa loses, given OSU’s crapping the bed the other day, it just makes the Big Ten look even worse. Like it or not, the perception is the B10 stinks. We need Iowa for some national respectability.

intra-big ten games

don’t really matter; the national perception of the big ten will only be fundamentally changed by us winning the majority of our non-conference games, particularly bowl games.

If an undefeated Iowa team gets into the bcs championship and gets crushed, I don’t see how that helps our national profile at all.

Who ares about inconference play. That’s like saying the OMG SEC is bad because they can’t win there conference. It has nothing to do with intra-big ten games or anything it has to do with conference vs conference and I don’t think an Iowa team can beat a Florida team right now.

Do Florida or Texas

really look like they’ll crush teams? I mean OU played with the Longhorns using their backup QB, and Florida hasn’t been able to pull away from LSU or Arkansas. You’d have to sell me on Arkansas > Iowa before I’ll believe Iowa couldn’t at least play with those teams.

I agree

that no one looks heads and shoulders better than anyone else. Hell, Northern Iowa and Arkansas State played tough with Iowa.

But, given the big ten’s recent history in bcs championship games, an undefeated Iowa team getting blown out remains a viable possibility. Since we’re playing the IF game, we have to consider what happens IF Iowa “wins out” but then loses big-time in the championship. It’s a distinct possibility and would not be good for Penn State.

All the said, if Iowa does win out, I would be rooting hard for them to win the national championship, or really, regardless of what happens, I want Iowa to win their bowl game big.

I don't think that's true

its not like the national perception of the big11 was great and then 2009 came and OSU lost to a weak USC team and Purdue…

The fact is that the perception of the big11 as mediocre is valid until big11 teams win consistently against other bcs teams.

I wouldn't trust old rooster me neither.

Not necessarily

As long as someone else takes the reigns of the Big Ten in tOSU’s EPIC SUCK, the conference is no worse off. They would be kidding themselves if they thought they’d be dominating the conference every year. The tides might be changing in the Big Ten, and if tOSU fails, someone else will step up.

Nope. Sorry

I want PSU to finish as high as they can so they get the best bowl opponent available. Then I want them to win that game.

The Big Ten will have to gain their respect in Bowl season. Otherwise all this fighting in the conference is nothing more than cripple fights.

by BSD on Oct 23, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My Point

Thank you, that brings us back full circle. For PSU to finish as highly ranked as possible, not only do they need to win out….but so does Iowa.

If PSU wins out, it won't matter what Iowa does...

PSU will play in a BCS game.

And if Iowa loses twice and PSU wins out we get the Big Ten Title.

I would love to have another Big Ten Title. I don’t know about you but give a BCS bowl no matter what happens.

I just don't want to

have to depend on Iowa for anything.

I even buy my corn locally.

Who cares by then

If Iowa won in a big bowl game it would be great for the B10. Nonetheless, ii’s Iowa getting to that game (meaning undefeated) that helps PSU get to a better game, so, in reality, who cares what happens to Iowa after……as long as PSU beats the then quality opponent they play in their bowl game. Would still hate to see Iowa get blown out by the SEC “real team”.

None of this matters

if you don’t win out. Step 1: Crush Michigan. Then worry about everything else.

It never gets to be easy

I’d rather Iowa win out and go to the Rose Bowl, and we played an respectable team in the Orange Bowl on January 5th.

Phish in Miami Jan. 1st
Steelers in Miami Jan. 3rd
PSU in Miami Jan 5th

My wife’s gonna hate me.

Is Phish in Miami 12/31/09 a done deal?

I don’t recall seeing anything offical, but I’ve heard a lot of people talking about it.

This entire thread just jinxed the hell out of us

we will lose the rest of our games. (no not really but cmon. This team has a lot of work to do.)

I really wish this was BGHP for a day

So we could spend a whole day and post saying “we’re so f’ed.” Its almost cathartic. I envy that.

NO

We don’t.

We want them to lose twice and us to win out so that we can be sole B10 champs. Not likely, but that’s best case scenario.

Our SoS doesn’t matter for precisely the reason you stated. We’re already out of the title hunt. So whether or not Iowa wins out means nothing (except B10 champ implications). If we win out, we WILL be in the top 10 and go to a BCS bowl no matter what (either as B10 champ or at large) – what we do is all that matters as far as getting to a BCS bowl.

Also, if Iowa wins out and goes to the MNC, there’s no guarantee we get Rose. Rose isn’t obligated to pick a B10 team if there’s a B10 team in the MNC.

Finally, the WORST POSSIBLE scenario is for us to win out and Iowa to lose one. Then our AD will pretend we’re co-champs when WE’RE NOT. After having to put up with that from OSU in 05 and 08 I would rather us lose one more than see that happen.

by PSUMark2008 on Oct 23, 2009 5:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

In fact

There is that new rule now that IF a PAC-10 or Big Ten team go to the MNC game, the Rose HAS to pick a Mid Major team if they qualify. The Fiesta wasn’t happy with the Rose picking Illinois a few years ago and sticking them with Boise State, even though they turned out with the better game in the end.

by BSD on Oct 23, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

new rule

That doesn’t take effect until the 2010 season (the new cycle of the BCS bowls), so it doesn’t come into play this season.

by Laaaaazzz on Oct 23, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

If we win out and will go to a BCS game at least as an at large no matter what, why not go with everyone respecting us more because our one loss came to a team that is top three and maybe playing for or at least making an argument that it should be playing for a national title? Of course it won’t matter if we forget to get off the plane like we did for the Rose Bowl last year, nonetheless, let’s not cut our nose to spite our face.

Because, if they lose in the national title game, it confirms opinions that the Big 10 sucks. Even if Iowa could have beaten every other team in the top ten, the MSM will say that the Big 10 champ lost in a bowl game. In a way, we want Iowa to lose one game & play in the Rose Bowl. Then, they can beat the Pac 10 champ there & we can play the second place OMG SEC team in the Sugar or something.

Wouldnt it be sweet

if we got Alabama in a bowl? that could make the next 2 years really interesting

I'd be scared this year

although starting this series again with a win would be nice…
