the whole punt-returning-fail incident
that they’re talking about with jr hemingway….
when i watched, it seemed to me that the blocker was face up with the PSU gunner, and that he just got bitched and thrown backwards into hemingway.
but that could just be my blue-tinted sunglasses.
We are gonna shock them with 5,000 mega watts of raw ROO POWER.

Eh
About what I anticipated. A lot of words, very little substance. No kudos to PSU for curbstomping Michigan, more pleas for patience with RR and GERG.
And of course, a metric assload of spin to downplay the trainwreck that game was for Michigan. Things like “PSU got some questionable calls”, “Tate wasn’t as bad as his numbers” (O RLY?), and the like gave me an impression of “eh, these games happen”, instead of the reality that most everyone else sees…Michigan’s offense is marginal still and their defense is atrocious. Matched up against a strong, well-disciplined defense (not Indiana or Domers), Rich Rod’s offensive scheme is largely negated.
That punking on Saturday was no aberration. In fact, the margin of victory could have, and in my opinion, should have been larger.

I didn't even bother to read it
but I almost wonder if it’s going to take a 10+ year win streak of our own to knock the smug and delusions of grandeur out of their thick skulls, even then I think they’re so comforted by their own BS that it’s a never ending cycle of pointless babble.

Don't worry Dawson
PSU vs. Michigan is exhibiting a clear win streak pattern.
They started it off with a streak of 1, we responded with a streak of 3, tripling their streak, and then they tripled our streak, for a streak of 9. Clearly we’re seeing the beginning of a 27 game win streak for Penn State. After 27 wins, the pattern will end because I said so.

Not that anyone affiliated with Penn State will notice, but they were the recipient of some questionable calls
First, whatever dude. I have to admit Michigan had a pretty elegent solution to running out of time at the end of the first half.
Secondly, the 12 men on the field penalty would have been a pretty ticky tack call. We didn’t play with 12 guys, the 12th guy had like one foot on the field and was running off. Obviously I referee football on a much lower level, but we’re actually instructed not to call that.
Kick catch intereference on the Hemmingway injury? How exactly? There wasn’t a Penn State guy within five yards of the returner. When exactly are they supposed to stop playing? That was a crappy fulke injury, unfortunately, that happens in football.
Beat Northwestern.

This is what pisses me off about the "12 man" whining
THAT IS A CHALLENGEABLE OFFENSE! You’re telling me nobody on the Michigan sidelines noticed that the last man was slow getting off? You’re telling me that on 4th and short, they’re not going to ask for a review, or throw the challenge flag? That’s so close, and such a routine play, you doubt that the refs are looking, but if you’re going to quick snap the punt, you’d expect RichRod to be staring down that opposing sideline, looking to see if they couldn’t get off.
And what the hell would the interference be? That’s, uh, a 15 yard penalty because Donovan Warren stumbled into Junior Hemingway. That’s a joke. What a whiny baby asking for that call.
And lastly, nice of him to “forget” that the clock stopped for about 11 seconds after the 2nd down play, and before the spike. That was an absolute farce.

They were probably too busy yelling and arguing with themselves on the sideline to notice
If someone has pictures of RichRod, GERG, and asst. coach meltdowns and arguments with each other on the sidelines, please do share, as they make me happy and tingly inside.

ironically, it was on a potential "12 men on the field" penalty
if i’m not mistaken it was on our first field goal? if they hadn’t taken the timeout (which may have allowed them to score at the end of the half), we’d have gotten a first down and probably scored. amazing the effect that one timeout can have on a game.

I don’t think he’s actually complaining about it being a bad call. I think he’s saying that the rules really should be changed. Which I kinda agree with. I don’t know how you’d do it, but those injuries really, really suck, and there’s got to be a way to protect guys who are just trying to fair catch a ball.
You can’t mean to tell me that when you saw that, you didn’t feel really bad for the guy.

I thought it was awful
But I’ve seen a 14 year old kid with his arm fractured in three places because the jammed his arm sliding on field turf. It’s football. I’m never suprised when somebody gets hurt, I’m suprised when somebody doesn’t.
It was nothing more or less than a fluky play, it was completely clean and terribly unfortunate [although from what I’ve heard, it’s just a knee bruise]. I don’t see how the rule can be changed to make it safer, but I’m hardly a “blood and guts” football fan, I’m in favor of just about anything that will make the game safer.

I’d need to take a closer look at that play to see exactly how it happened, but the simple thing would be to prevent blocking within a given distance of a punt returner who’s signaled for a fair catch.
It wouldn’t be a crazy rule – after all, if he had just flat out shoved the guy into him a lot closer, preventing him from catching the ball, well, that’s interference without actually being interference.
Might seem a bit over the top, but c’mon, it’s a fair catch, those should err on the side of safe.

wallace (or who ever was down there for our coverage)
sort of “nudged” warren and he went tumbling into hemingway. the only reason they even brought up the fact that “they think that should be a penalty” is because it happened to their guy. no one thinks about that kind of thing ever…unless it happens to their guy.
so what is wallace to do, not make that play? it’s legal…that should be the end of the converstation…a totally unintentional injury, get over it.

Well, duh, no one ever thinks about that kind of thing unless it happens to their guy. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t, and it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be changed.
And in the end this play might not end up being one you want to penalize, but I can definitely understand extending interference with a fair catch to prevent people being blocked into the punt returner.

Best line:
i was (fortunately/unfortunately) at the 50 yard line, row 20 or so for the game and my GOD did it appear more to be a perfect storm of bs than a failure for Michigan to be good/demonstration they are a failure.
The perfect storm of bs was us smashing the schizzle out of you.

Blocking into the returner?
We need to make that penalty now? We already protect the returner. Now we have to protect the guys blocking for them? Why don’t we just make it two hand touch and be done with it.
And please. It’s the Big Ten. Everyone gets questionable calls. The officiating is terrible.

I wasn't altogether thrilled with the tone of some of our posts here last week whining about the refs
But, at least we were complaining about questionable enforcement of actual rules. Complaining about a non-existent rule just because the consequences of this one, single play were unfortunate is ridiculous.
How often have you seen that situation arise? Blocker gets himself out-of-position and so off-balance and turned around that he is able to be shoved into the returner such that he slams headlong into the returner’s knees. More often than not, the blocker gets beat and the kicking team gets a free shot at the returner or the returner has to fair catch, as it should be, i.e. blocker fail = no return/dead returner. Making this a penalty incentivizes the blocker to keep himself between the tackler and returner at all costs because if you get shoved, you just flail, bump into the returner and it’s a free 15 yards.

Stating facts is not whining.
It’s stating facts. I don’t give two s@#ts if Michigan or their fans care for those facts or not.
Like I said in the prior fan post, I don’t know why something shady always happens in Ann Arbor, I just know it does.

I'm not sure what questionable calls he's talking about.
And I say that with complete honesty, I don’t know what he’s referencing. But you know that (a) the officiating is bad in the conference and (b) all fans think the refs are out to get them when Michigan fans are complaining about the treatment they get in their own stadium. I’m not an OMG BLAME THE REFERINES guy, but come on already.
The guy from Penn State Clips is fighting the good fight over there.

it's been mentioned up top
but the only one i can think of is the “12 men” penalty they thought we should have gotten on lavarro’s pick. but it would have been terribly ticky tack (as somone also already mentioned)…it had no effect on the outcome of the play.

They got manhandled.
The announcers made a big deal on the 12 men on the field thing, so their fans are obviously going to pick up on it. The beef they have on it, is that they were running a hurry up to essentially draw that penalty, then the play they wound up having to run blew up badly.

I did really enjoy the pwning Bellanca gave him, tho.

Agreed
mgoblog has been a no-fun zone, in my opinion, since around their loss to Oregon in 2007. The Michigan proletariat have overrun a place that used to be fun. I’m betting many of the pitchforkers signed up for blog accounts across that two week stretch.

Hey, speaking of verdicts
What do we suspect DickRod’s lads will end up at this year? Remaining schedule:
@the dying Zookers
Home v Boilers
@ Camp Randall
Home v Brutus
They look like they have a lot of potential still (Drive One vs us was pretty intimidating), but lack just a little much-needed composure. To win games, they seem to need their opponent to make more than a few mistakes. Can they win 3 of those 4 games? 2? I’m guessing Zook & Bielema will NOT be able to play enough of this kind of ball to organize a win, but either of them could rise up and steal one too. I’ll guess 2-2, to finish 7-5.

My guess
I’m solidly thinking 2-2, wouldn’t be surprised at 1-3. I think OSU is an L for them, Wiscy is probably a loss, and I wouldn’t put it past Purdue to sneak a win in there.

No sure wins there
The Boilers are a probable win. Illinois is a probable win, but they are a desperate team with nothing left to play for. If UM turns the ball over four or five times watch out.
I think Wisconsin and Ohio State are losses.

A little further down the page
is his blogpoll ballot. And shocker, we get little respect from him for kicking their ass all over the Big House. We bump up a mere one slot, while Georgia Tech bypasses us and leaps three spaces for beating UVA.
Well, that’s either disrespect to us or an indication of his opinion of this Michigan team, essentially saying a win against them is less impressive than a win against UVA.

Unfortunately
All people remember was that night against Iowa. To a lot of people, we are a #15 team and that is all we will ever be. Nothing short of pulling an upset against a higher ranked opponent will change that. That’s why this bowl season will be so important.

Let's be honest.
Metaphorically, the non-con schedule forced Penn State to go all in in the MNC—undefeated or bust. We knew that it would require a miracle for a one-loss PSU squad to be respected in the preseason.
The fact is that two of PSU’s seven wins were against FBS teams with winning records. One of those is Temple. It’s damning, and I don’t fault anyone for bypassing us with Georgia Tech after they handled VaTech. PSU doesn’t have anything near that on their resume.
