Who could be the next long-tenured coaches?

There will never be another Joe, but will there be another coach who's at the same school for even 20, 25 years?

Star-divide

There are a lot of factors that would determine whether a coach could stay at the same school for a significant amount of time  - their age when they take the job, their family situation, their success, the program/booster's expectations, the opportunities that come knocking, etc.

I listened to a radio interview with Pat Fitzgerald and it got me thinking that he could be a guy who could be at the same school for 20-25 years. He's a Chicago guy, lived his whole life here, all his family is here, he has a decent recruiting pipeline, not onerous expectations of the program, and I'm not convinced he would give all that up for more $$.

Who else do you think could be at the same school for 20, 25 years?

DO YOU HAVE PRIDE, DANNY?

9 more years?

I thought the same thing and checked, he’s been at IA for 11 years, and he’s 54. I’m not sure he’ll make it

by InScoresOfOtherGames on Oct 29, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Ferentz is the answer

the nfl keeps calling and he keeps saying “no.” As RR will tell anyone, Iowa City’s a nice place, not unlike State College, if only half as charming. No reason to leave. Also, Iowa, like PSU has a tradition of keeping coaches for a long time.

I wouldn't trust old rooster me neither.

Well

Northwestern isn’t a real program. The only reason he’ll stay there is because 7 or 8 wins every year placates the “fanbase” and isn’t good enough to draw attention from the real schools.

Not in this day and age

If a coach puts together a couple bad seasons these days he’s gone(See soon, Weis, Charley). If he puts together a few great seasons, he will get the attention of the NFL or a more prestigious college program and with the money the NFL and top tier colleges throw at their coaches, it would be hard to turn that down (See Rodriguez, Rich).

I could see maybe Saban or Meyer sticking around for a while, Meyer because he has a great deal and is having a lot of success right now, and Saban because it seems like the fans are absolutely loving him and he brought nearly instant success to the school when no one was expecting it. If he can keep it up through the rest of his contract and resist the urge to go back to the NFL I think he may be there a while. But not many coached beyond that.

He has been at USC for 9 years. There is no way he tries going back to the NFL and I can’t see him leaving USC for any other college.

Only question is if he is willing to coach into his late 60s

Depends on how bad your "bad years" are

If he goes 7-5 a couple of years which would be considred bad for USC standards. I think he has earned the right to stay. Now if somehow he goes Charlie Wiess bad who knows

Depends on the school

To mash together comments from above, said coach would have to already be at a top tier program. Else, success breeds longevity. If you are successful at a lesser school, you’ll get offers from biggers ones and most of the time take those offers. Then your streak starts back up.

The more realisitic post is who is going to be the next big coaching change…Chip Kelly at Notre Dame? Someone at Michigan?

I will say this

I don’t want Joe retiring until he wants to, but the thought of Sean Lee being a D-coordinator or LBs coach, while Scrap takes the helm and LJ takes the DC spot, and then possibly taking over as a HC down the line really excites me. I think he’d really make a great coach, but I do want him to have a great NFL career first.

Is it wrong to have gotten...

a bit excited about tha thought? I mean really, it’s a pretty good one.

by bconway6 on Oct 30, 2009 4:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't get the love for Sean Lee as a coach

yeah, he had to sit out last year and helped “coach” a bit, but other than that we have ZERO idea how he is as a coach. We all want to assume he’d be great, but wouldn’t it be nice to, you know, have a guy with a little bit more experience before we start hoping he’ll be our D-coordinator?

Also, the kid hasn’t even finished playing college ball, let alone pro ball, let alone minor position coach yet…

by The JuggerNitt on Oct 30, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's meant to be seen as far down the line after a long, successful pro career

but the fact that he did step up and help out the coaching staff while he was hurt, makes me think he actually liked coaching. Obviously he’s not the kind of guy that’s just going to sit on the bench and sulk all season, but it’s not like the coaches forced him to put on the headset and khaki pants. He could have just helped out in practice and given advice to players on the sideline, but he took a more front-seat approach to helping out the team.

It was just a hypothetical post, “Somewhere down the line, wouldn’t it be awesome if….” and so on, nothing more. Above all I want him to get drafted and be extremely successful in the NFL so that he doesn’t need to coach. Down the line, if he really enjoyed his season as part of the coaching staff, it would be cool to see him come back to PSU.

by dawsonPSU10 on Oct 30, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ah

when you said Scrap at the helm, it seemed more immediate, as I don’t imagine Scrap will be around for that long in order for Lee to start coaching.

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 2, 2009 12:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well

“Immediate” refers to the period in “three or four more years” when Joe decides to retire, just like the past 50,000 times he’s been asked the question.

What about the Redhead?

The only coach who has had to be alongside JoePa, stride for stride, rant for rant, year after year is Mike McQueary.
The kid must be doing something right. As coach of the wideouts, he has consistent quality performances from the group, and as recruiting coordinator, PSU is doing all right, thank you.

Sometimes I think his contribution, other than having to translate JoePa onto the Motorola System up to the Coaches Booth, is overlooked.

You gotta figure he’ll move to QB coach once Joe retires in 2020. Galen will be gone too and JayPa would probably become in charge of offense.

Why would Big Red move to QB coach?

He’s been doing a great job with the wideouts. I’d pick him as a OC before Jay, and likewise, Jay has been doing a good job with the QBs, so why move him from that spot. Then again, if Jay really was the architect of the Spread HD, maybe he does have what it takes to run an offense.

because that's the position he played

and the position he should have been coaching from the get go if not for some nepotism. At least that used to be the argument.

But you can't deny the success of the WRs with him as a Wideout coach

I think I’ve heard it in interviews with our WRs, but him being a former QB actually helps the wideouts by getting instruction from a QBs POV. Who knows, maybe Big Red really wants the QB coach spot, but he’s been more than successful in developing WRs for PSU.
