Is The Record War Drawing To A Close?

DocSat pulls some recent quotes after Florida State's second straight loss to an unranked opponent and first ever oh-n-two league start. His conclusion?
New university president + Bigwig booster/trustee calling for a coach's head in the newspaper = said coach's head on a platter by December, every time. Barring a full-scale turnaround and an extremely unlikely ACC championship, every meeting of boosters, alumni, administrators, media, fans and local crows will be devolve into a civil war if Bowden is back in 2010.

No Bowl game?
Even with a dreadful 2-3 start I would think they could win 4 more games this year… but then again I haven’t looked at their schedule… with the way they’ve been playing, maybe they don’t have 4 more winnable games left.

They play 7 more 2008 bowl teams
I don’t think they become bowl-eligible this year.

they still have
GT, UNC, NCSt, Clemson, Wake, Maryland, Florida.
Loses at Florida, GT, and UNC or NCSt…and Maryland is looking like an ACC disrupter. Honestly, right now in the ACC it looks like any team could lose to any team…except maybe Miami and VT…but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Wow. Fair Enough.
I really don’t see 4 winnable games for them there. I’m still not going to completely rule out the possibility of them playing some football in December, but judging from their schedule, it does seem very very doubtful.

I dunno
The only one I’d deem as “unwinnable” is Florida. All the others seem like likely losses, except Maryland (beating Clemson was probably a fluke… probably) but if BCS Buster Buster Florida State shows up, they’re winnable. However, the order in which they play their next few games does not help their case. GT is the toughest team they face in the remainder of their schedule, besides Florida, it’s probably a loss. Then they’re 2-4 and have to play a night time road game against a probably (they play Georgia Southern next) 4-2 UNC. Now they’re 2-5. They’ve got to go undefeated against NC State @ Clemson, @ Wake, and Maryland, because they’re not beating Florida. I think they need to get it together VERY soon and pull the upset against Georgia Tech or UNC on the road at night to have a decent chance. If they get down 2-5 I’d put lots and lots of money on them not making it.

You know what?
Everytime they start to write this guy’s obituatry he comes up with something. Three weeks ago they beat BYU in Provo by like four touchdowns. We’ll see how it plays out, but I’d be suprised if they don’t win several more games this year.

Given this guy's background,
what are the chances he goes and pulls something like signing with an FCS team to keep coaching a couple more years just so said FCS team gets media recognition? I could see him doing something like that, joining the Jacksonville St. team as “head coach” just so he can stay in the “race” with Joe.
by PSUJunny05 on Oct 5, 2009 11:47 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'd be surprised if he didn't
Based on the way his kids talk, and Bowden’s reputation, I really believe if he’s pushed out of FSU he’ll go to an FCS school in Florida and continue coaching. He’ll chase that record until they day he dies.

if he did that just to keep the record race going
i think it would pretty much be universally understood joe is the better coach…and the better man

But he would never admit to doing just to keep the race going
He would say something stupid like “I’ve still got some good years in me.” and his idiot sons would back that up, maybe even joining him on the sideline (See Kiffin, Lane and Monte). Either way, I see this guy doing something other than bowing out peacefully.

Unless he runs an FCS program into the ground...
I can’t comment on the appearance of Bowden to recruits. Do they go to play for him, out of respect and coaching ability, or do they go to play at Florida State or for Fisher? It would kind of depend on him being able to pull in good recruits to said FCS school, IMO.

I can’t believe that never occurred to me. Chances of this seem a lot higher than slight.

Do FCS wins count
toward the Major College wins record? I thought the only reason the Samford wins count is becasue there was no separation of 1A and 1AA at the time.

If you are talking I-AA wins included
then isn’t Eddie Robinson the leader?
I’m sure Bowden could get some FBS school to take him though.

1A and 1AA were separated
in the late 70’s. I thought 1AA wins after the separation weren’t counted. Since Grambling is still 1AA, Robinson’s wins after the separation don’t count toward wins at a “Major” college program.
That being said Robinson still has 400+ wins total. With Paterno at 386 or so and counting, a few more seasons and it won’t matter.

a coach
needs to be head coach at an FBS school for 10 years for all coaching wins to count.

Please further explain...
Example. Coach Heywood Jablome is the head coach for the USC Gamecocks. He has some decent years winning a total of 80 games, but after 10 years he is replaced.
He takes an assistant position at another school and works his way up to accepting an assistant head coachposition for the TCU Horned Frogs where he generates a buzz as a dynamic recruiter.
He is offered the position of Head Coach with the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs upstart FCS program. Heywood loves Santa Cruz and is very succesful running the program. After 35 years he retires with 350 victories.
How many major college victories has Heywood accumulated?

Less than Joe Paterno
But in all seriousness, I think the sole purpose of this “rule”, such as it is, is to grandfather in Bobby Bowden’s Samford wins. I mean other than for this one situtation (Paterno/Bowden) what is the purpose of this rule?
I believe that the legal term for this is Bill of Attainder, ie. a law drafted to specifically deal with one circumstance. Which is unconstitutional, FWIW.

The 350 wins
were just the Banana Slug FCS victories. He had 80 at a D1 school for a total of 430.

Why FCS
Surely he should be able to find a position at a FBS school. Why wouldn’t he take a position at a Virginia, or at least float the idea to rattle FSU?
FSU should be skewered for Jimbo’s contract. Was he in such high demand that they had to put in the $5M clause?
Do all of my paragraphs need to end with a question?

since all wins count as long as you have what, like 10 years in the FBS?

I'm not sure if I buy this boosetr arguement
I’m sure for every booster that wants him gone there are at least 1 or 2 that are saying if you fire Bobby not on his terms we will pull our support.

It's getting uglier
Ann Bowden (Bobby’s wife) is digging her heels in.
I wish I could say I was happier about all of this. But I’m not.

The comments are unbelievable.
it seems like everyone in Tallahassee not named Bowden is ready for this guy to leave. I know we all had out “Fire Joe” moment earlier this decade, but no one (I hope) wanted to run the man completely out of town. At the worst, THE WORST, it was get him off the field. Hell, maybe even promote him to AD, but never get him out of town. Jeez, this thing is big, bigger than you, and you are not me.

My impression
Based on some of the articles I read today, is that Tomahawk Nation is roughly the equivalent of www.firebobbybowden.com. It may be more representative of one niche group of fans than all of the fans generally. But I really don’t know.

This Bowden thing shows the divide
between he and JoePa. It begins and ends with respect and integrity. Yeah, both fanbases and schools had their moments of doubt in each leader but JoePa prevailed and will coach as long as he wants to because of what he’s done on AND off the field, where as Bowden hasn’t built up any off the field equity so FSU basically put a termination date in his future with the Jimbo contract.

I never really felt one way or the other about Bowden
Until recently. For the last few years, it seems like every interview I heard with him (or one of his boys) mentioned “the record”. And that’s when I decided I really didn’t like the guy. Coach because you love the game, your university, the players. Not because you gotta have the most wins. I know he always tried to “joke” about beating Paterno, but if I heard Joe talking about it that way, I would be a little disappointed in him.
And if he goes on to another school to coach, that just confirms he was only in it for the wins. Could you imagine Joe going to another school after PSU? Just enjoy retirement, whether it’s your decision or someone elses. You’ve earned this time to relax.

Unfortunate
I want Joe to have the record, but I like Coach Bowden and it’s sad that it’s ending this way.
We’re seeing the end of an era, as far as coaches. I think some of the changes are for the better, but in general, coaches today are less interesting and more corporate.

The Bowden's will just claim the most family wins.
Until HC Jaypa overtakes the sons.
