It seems pretty obvious that Cory is worked up over the fact that we’re playing an IAA school… and he makes a few valid points (about ticket prices and strength of schedule, etc). But it seems like he’s taking it out on Joe. You can hear the contempt in his voice as he asks those questions.

Shouldn’t he be bombarding the athletic department with these questions?

by GreatScawt on Oct 6, 2009 10:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The guy clearly has an agenda, and he's set on confronting Paterno about it.

Ticket prices? Seriously? Is Giger on some kind of Everyman Crusade for the little guy, standing up for the consumer who shouldn’t have to pay what the market will bear for a game against an inferior opponent?

Give me a break. If you don’t want to pay $50+ for the game, then don’t. The fact that over 100,000 people will line up to pay just that sum seems to make Giger’s the minority opinion.

Ok

Don’t get me started on ticket prices. We live in America. Supply and Demand. If people want to pay $50-$60 to watch I-AA Eastern Illinois, then that’s what the ticket is worth. If they don’t they can choose not to go to the game. It’s that simple.

The question Penn State will ask is not whether they should lower ticket prices for the cupcake games, but raise them for the big games like Iowa and Ohio St.

For the supply and demand reference. The correct ticket price is the highest that will still fill the stadium. It’s disappointing how few people in the world understand basic economic concepts like this.

No way

Not even close. It shouldn’t be, either. The University is not trying to turn a profit off of its kids.

I respectfully disagree

about the University’s intentions with its own students and offer the new ticket system as evidence.

However, I do agree that student ticket prices shouldn’t be “the highest that will still fill the stadium.” I was referring to non-student tickets.

by PSUMark2008 on Oct 8, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Academically sure.....

but in reality people have become more and more incapable of distinguishing a want from a need. Consquently, even though people pay x amount for a ticket (possibly striking the equilibrium you are talking about) that doesn’t mean they feel like it was a fair price.

What I thought was interesting was the comment Paterno made about counting I-AA wins towards bowl eligibility. That means you have double the financial incentive to schedule I-AA teams vs. all BCS teams. Payday during the game while padding your stats to ensure you get the bowl payoff and free TV advertising for your school.

Seriously

Whenever people complain about the ticket prices for the crap games like Eastern Illinois, I always ask if they’d be happier with a cheaper face value for such a game if they had to pay something like $100 or more for a ticket to see tOSU. If you feel the overall price for season tickets is too high for the value you get, don’t buy the tickets (which the complainers seem unwilling to do, which suggests the price is fair).

That said, I do think that PSU should have seperate prices for different games, if only to allow for selling individual tickets to games like EIU and Temple at decrease prices (which may help them sellout, which they didn’t do this season against all the patsies).

they didn't

None of the 4 non-conference games have been sellouts. You can go to ticketmaster right now and buy tickets for the EIU game. I’m not talking resales, I’m talking tickets right from PSU.

i stand corrected

i didn’t even know they sold through ticketmaster…though i should have assumed that since they sell the student tickets through that garbage service

Seriously, we have a freaking IST college on campus

have some of the website geeks set up a system where we dont have to pay a “convenience fee” for an electronic ticket no less, just for using someone else’s website when we buy our tickets.

by dawsonPSU10 on Oct 6, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

As an IST grad,

website geek, and armchair economist, I find the current student ticket system amusing, in an ironic, kind of annoyed, and sucks-for-the-current-students kind of way.

The fact is, from the University’s perspective, this new system works perfectly. It was never about reducing costs to students (that was just the stated reason to make it sound good). It was about increasing revenue. Now, the University has total control over who can and can’t purchase student tickets, and anytime there’s a transaction (other than the free forwarding of tickets), the University makes money on it. They REALLY cash in if you want to bring a non-student with you – even more than they did before.

(Yes, there are workarounds – for instance, if you want to buy an OSU ticket, good luck finding it on the TicketExchange site. You’ll have to go on eBay/craigslist and bid to pay someone in cash who will then forward it to you for “free.” There’s also always the use-somebody-else’s-ID-technique, but the new ticket system still gives PSU a ton of new income.)

As far as TicketMaster – yes, if you put a bunch of CSE/IST students together (and paid them enough) they could probably come up with a decent system. The problem is, you need a lot of web server horsepower to handle the traffic that site would get, especially when it’s time to buy season tickets in the summer. This is the reason PSU switched to TicketMaster in the first place (the 2006 student ticket sale crashed the PSU servers). It was more cost effective for the University to partner w/ TicketMaster than it was to upgrade their web server environment. The “convenience fee” is really just transferring some of the cost of the PSU’s contract w/ TicketMaster to the students.

i just don't understand why

they don’t just come out and be honest about it. i mean, i’m not stupid (i think) i realize it’s much easier for them to just pick one benefit and not acknowledge the downsides…but if they were upfront to students in the beginning, there wouldn’t be as much rage and annoyance. of course, the ticketmaster thing started my senior year and i got tickets…so i’m not one to have too many gripes.

We decide when you hear the snap count...

by thedrizzle on Oct 7, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw they hadn't sold out when the season began,

but I figured they would eventually sell once the season started. I would imagine being called out as one of the worst schedules in the country has had a negative effect on all of our OOC ticket sales, not just EIU. I wonder where the risk/reward evens out with this. Maybe, with the four non-sellouts it would actually be better to give a bigger payout to a Div. 1 school.

by markpsu on Oct 8, 2009 8:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look at it this way

How much could you get for selling your tOSU ticket this year? 150-250? Higher if they’re better seats? But if you got season tickets, you payed 50-60 for that ticket, as well as Eastern Illinois. Does that not balance that out? The ticket for a junk opponent, no offense to them or anything, is probably worth half of what you paid for it, depending on the opponent, possibly less for EIU. And even if you bought the ticket you can try to sell it online if you’re an alumni, and still make some of your money back.

by dawsonPSU10 on Oct 6, 2009 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here is my personal example...

4 seats x 8 games x 55 = $1760 + parking.

Living out of state, I attend 2 games/year and try to sell the rest. This year I was not able to sell all my unused tickets (2 Akron, 4 Syracuse, 4 Temple, 4 EIU) = 14 × 55 = $770. (Why doesn’t the PSU Ticket Exchange allow you to sell for less than face value?)

My Iowa and OSU seats cost me $151.25 ea.

Could I have bought them cheaper in the secondary market? Maybe, but then I wouldn’t have had the personal satisfaction of helping the Levi Lamb Scholarship fund to the tune of $1500.

One man doing the work of 100's for the good of 1000's

by rahpsu92 on Oct 7, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Secondary Market Value

I tried to get tickets to the Iowa game and they were running between $150 and $175 a ticket. I haven’t done the actual math because I’m not considering going to the OSU game but from what I saw, they are going for more.

So even with your loses, you actually got a better deal than those of us who don’t have season tickets.

BTW: Those are Ebay prices which are lower (usually) than PSU Ticket Exchange, StubHub, etc…

I take JoePa's side on just about everything

but this is something that really irks me. D-1A teams shouldn’t play D-1AA schools. At best, it’s a boring game. At worst, you have an Appalachian State moment. We have nothing to gain and a lot to loose (not that I think there’s any real chance they’ll beat us) by playing EIU.

It’s stupid to ask the head coach about things that aren’t up to him (like ticket prices), but you can’t say that you were “fortunate enough to be able to get a good team like Eastern Illinois with a good football tradition and a fine program” with a straight face. Yes, I know Joe always talks up the opponent, but that’s ridiculous. EIU was put on the schedule because they’re an easy win and they’d gladly come to our house with no demand for reciprocity. Period. Trying to dress it up as anything else is just stupid.

I know it’s not Joe’s fault we’re playing them, but the athletic office should take a lot of crap for this (and the rest of our ridiculous OoC schedule this year). Yeah, everyone else does it, but we’re Penn State. Do we want to settle for everyone else’s standards?

This game is the NCAA's fault

Allowing the 12th game gave us this travesty. If no one thought that all the programs weren’t going to take the money and run they were crazy.

I haven’t watched the video yet but from what I’ve read the dude should have let it go. There’s no reason to get snippy at a press conference. He doesn’t owe any reporters anything.

1-AA teams come cheap. The university makes a couple extra 100K bringing in Eastern Illinois than bringing in Kent St. And that’s a heck of a lot of volleyball uniforms and lacrosse sticks and fencing equipment. Not to mention gas and hotel money for those teams.

Personally, I don’t really care about playing 1-AA teams — a cupcake is a cupcake. I’m more concerned about seeing us play 2 BCS conference teams in the OOC schedule than upgrading from Eastern Illinois to Ball St.

I'm so glad to see this.

I occasionally am forced to suffer through Cory Giger’s awful voice on my way home from work, and he is, in nearly every way, awful to listen to. I feel as though he embarasses himself like this once a week during Joe’s pressers. If you listen close, you can hear him every week asking a question that anyone who has ever even heard of Penn State and Joe Paterno knows not to ask. There is etiquette to these things, and the man obviously is not familiar with it.

by BSmith717 on Oct 7, 2009 12:53 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

To be fair

Giger has learned from the best at antagonizing and annoying Joe. For 20 + years Neil Rudel was the lone reporter for the Mirror at the weekly presser. Every week he would go down the list of the questions you know not to ask and find 10 ways to ask them. Honestly, I think it’s hysterical whether it’s Giger or Rudel…anything to cut through the standard “EUI (Temple, Cincy, La Tech etc) is a great football team”, “we got a lot of work to do”, type of answers is good with me.

like you said, we ALL KNOW what joe is going to say. we could be playing a HS team and joe would say the same thing. so why bother bringing it up. i don’t need to hear joe say anything. maybe if it’s UM, tOSU, iowa or some quality non-conference team, there is not a whole lot of interesting or enlightening things joe can let us in on.

by RudyWasOffsides on Oct 7, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Few decent kids

Joe actually made a decent point about the talent distribution. Since there is no waiting period for transferring to a FCS school(plus teh schollie limit), there is a decent amount of D1 talent playing at these places. Just look who left here for FCS. This EIU team has a couple former Hawkeyes, a couple UF kids and kid from UM. Not enough to make the team a powerhouse, but enough to win a big game if the cards fall right.

That is not to say these teams have the overall talent to compete at the FCS level(they don’t), but the difference between a decent FCS school and the dregs of FBS really isn’t much at all. In the end, as has been said before is that a cupcake is a cupcake is a cupcake. It just makes fiscal sense for a school to buy a cheaper cupcake, especially if it tastes the same.

Giger

Part of the problem is just two weeks ago, Giger told Jopa, at the weekly press conference, that the stadium should be renamed Paterno Field. Two weeks after that brown nosing he comes up with this. Could he be desperate to make a name for himself? Giger has a history of talking out of both sides of his mouth. There are also his occasional outlandish opinions such as a few years ago when he said Peyton Manning is overated. Yesterday on his radio show he said Troy Polamalu is only the 17th or 18th best NFL defensive player. Oh, really? Daily Altoona Mirror readers know he has a five word vocabulary: horrible, awful, terrible, lousy, stinks.

I feel bad for Giger

And all the journalists who have to sit through these things. Think about it from their perspective. First of all, this is their job. They have to be there because they have to get paid so they can pay the bills. His editor is expecting a story the next day. Joe only tolerates these things for about 20 minutes. You get one, maybe two questions. If you’re lucky, Joe is in a good mood and decides to answer one of them. If Joe is in an so-so mood he tells you he doesn’t care and you can go ahead and write whatever you want. If he’s in a bad mood you get pwned and told you don’t know what you’re talking about.

So guys like Giger who sit through these things have to take odd angles in their questions to elicit a response. I don’t blame them for it, and I don’t think they are doing it to be sensational and draw attention to themselves.
