The FSU faithful are going absolutely FREAKING insane

http://www.tomahawknation.com/2009/10/6/1072818/florida-state-blackout-organizer

Florida State fans are making news with their plan to wear black at home against Georgia Tech this Saturday night on ESPN to protest Bobby Bowden.  The measure garnered national attention, and been hailed as "innovative, and strikingly visual."

The movement has exploded with over 4550 members in the official Facebook Group only 48 hours after its creation.  Creator Andre Roman projects it could easily reach 10,000 supporters before the game.  Organizers expect to have at least half of Florida State's student section to be decked out in black.

With the recent news that Florida State is close to finalizing a deal with current Offensive Coordinator/ Head Coach in Waiting Jimbo Fisher, allowing Fisher to assume total control of the team, including personnel decisions, I wondered if the plan is still on.  I caught up with Joseph Johnson, one of the movement's top organizers.  Despite effort by some in the university to quash the measure, Johsnon says their passion for a quality college football program will not be silenced.  Continue reading:

Ok guys, let me help you out here.

1.) Florida State is trying to finalize a deal with Jimbo Fisher so that he will essentially be the head coach.  I mean, really, Bowden doesn't do anything anyway, so you're protesting someone who does absolutely nothing?

2.) Black is not strikingly visual.  It's black.

Facebook Groups

I tend to be skeptical about anything I see on facebook. There were close to 5,000 people in the “Whiteout College Gameday” facebook group and as we all know, that ended up being an epic fail. I’d say at least half of those people are members of the Seminol hoi poloi, and won’t actually be at the game, but rather, sitting at home in their jorts and black t-shirts.

So if you were an FSU fan explaining this situation to someone who knows nothing of it:

We have this legendary coach named Bobby Bowden. He once went twelve years without finishing out of the top five and basically built our program from nothing. This season, we started out 2-3. But don’t worry, we plan on running our coach out of town a year and a half prior to his planned retirement. We have this great guy to replace him. He has made a career working as a quarterbacks coach for the Bowden family. He also briefly went out on his own where he coached an over-hyped #1 draft pick that never panned out as well as potential NCAA hall of famer Matt Mauck. Did I mention his first name is Jimbo?

For the record, I would love to see Bowden go tomorrow, but seriously, this reaction cannot be considered anything but knee-jerk unless these people all felt this way prior to the season.

by cpm126 on Oct 7, 2009 10:11 AM EDT reply actions

but if you read all their stuff

they aren’t specifically raging about this season. it is the last 9 or so seasons (essentially this past decade) where they’ve only had double digits wins once. this season has just been the final straw…also i’m sure it doesn’t help that they are now the 4th best team in FL.

We decide when you hear the snap count...

by thedrizzle on Oct 7, 2009 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I pretty much agree with you.

Are they going to get that much better without Bowden ? Answer is probably no. At the end of the day, what he did at FSU is unparalleled and shouldn’t be looked at as the norm.

Florida Gator fans are about to get a big wake up call when Tebow leaves as well. Too early to tell right now, but it SEEMS like they are getting a taste of the post-Tim Tebow era via their offense “sputtering” in the post-Percy Harvin era.

120 teams playing big boy football…….if your team is in the top 20 I think you are doing pretty good. Who has dominated college football for the last 10 years? Answer: Nobody.

Be careful FSU fans……you might just get what you asked for and in the process you might also be showing your ass. 18 months isn’t going to kill you. Wait it out and let him go when his contract is up.

Two things

1. How are they so damn sure that Jimbo Fisher solves all their problems?

2. They joined the ACC, they got used to winning just because, so two things happened simultaneously, the jones caught up, and FSU fell back to the pack. I think that is one of the core problems that got Penn State in trouble early in the decade.

I also think that if they had joined the SEC instead of the ACC, they would taken a couple of those 3-8 seasons like we had to. The inverse of what would have happened had Penn State joined the Big East, rather than the Big Ten.

Counter Point
Florida Gator fans are about to get a big wake up call when Tebow leaves as well. Too early to tell right now, but it SEEMS like they are getting a taste of the post-Tim Tebow era via their offense "sputtering" in the post-Percy Harvin era.

I spent a week in Florida on their practice field with the team and the coaching staff. They are not going to see that big of a drop off after Tebow. Yes there will be a drop off at first but they will reload.

I know a lot of you hold the SEC in contempt on here, but studying the Gator’s system, meeting the coaches first hand and seeing what is going on there is amazing. Meyer is a good coach, and a solid human being. He might not be leading a grand experiment but he is holding his team accountable and is a great leader. Say what you will, but they are recruiting their arses off and getting top tier players who fit their system. I don’t see them falling off the top 10.

They will eventually. Its the facts of life.

No team dominates for more than about a decade at a time. Not consecutively anyways. No one ever can see why a team so great could have downturns, but it happens(Re: FSU of the 90’s). Sure as the sun will rise tomorrow. Not that they will forever be bad, but it is tough to sustain success for such long periods of time. This isn’t a slight to Meyer, it happens for everyone. They may not be as bad as we or Bama were in the early 00’s or ND recently, but they won’t be top 10 forever, neither will USC.

Every elite team goes through some period of varying lengths and varying degrees of suckitude. For some it is worse than others, it might be brief for UF but it will happen sooner or later.

Interesting.......

I have toned down my Bowden and FSU hating quite a bit over the last decade. Part of that has to do with FSU not being as good, part of that has to do with us having our own off field issues, and part of that has to do with the fact that Paterno seems to have no issue with them so why the hell should I sweat it. Because of that, I have not been a Bowden basher and I certainly don’t pretend to know how much “Coaching” he is doing which seems to be a hot button issue when comparing Paterno and Bowden.ab

So…….while listening to Atlanta ESPN radio today while waiting for my wife, Peter Tom Willis is interviewed. One of the personalities, Chuck Oliver (I believe he was an Auburn Lineman at some point) says to PTW…….“So….I have probably been to 20 or 25 FSU practices over the last 4 or 5 years and not once did I see Bobby Bowden anywhere near the practice field until practice was over. That is when he would come down in his golf-cart to give a wrap up the day sort of talk to the players. So if he isn’t Coaching, and he isn’t able to hire and fire coaches, and he isn’t at practice…….what is he doing ?”.

PTW just went on talking about his respect for Bowden and that Bowden does a lot of delegating etc.etc. I thought it was interesting to hear that because Todd Blackledge and Kirk Herbstreit would have never reported the same thing from Happy Valley.
