Special Teams Personel to be Shuffled. No this is not a repeat.
With 2 games in the regular season we're in the bottom 5% in kickoff returns and coverage. So *now* we're going to make some personel changes. Joe says it's not scheme, and it's not coaching.
Ok, usually I'm a blatant optimist, but something tells me this might have a little to do with scheme and coaching. Last I checked we have 1st string guys out there on coverage and returns, and we're still horrific.

For some perspective
Only 3 teams out of 120 D-1 are worse at defending the punt:
Notre Dame
Tulane
South Florida

Maybe
we can put a punt returner out there with no arms…I’d rather we muff every punt than see another fair catch.

I'd prefer we send 11 after every punt and try to block one.
Figured, if we hurry the punter, he won’t get as much distance, so the punt + roll should equal the spot of the fair catch. And, who knows – we may actually BLOCK A PUNT. Imagine that…

I like this!!!
Maybe we could also run the flying V on third and 3, instead of the standard QB keeper

With the new punting formation that many teams are using
(the one with three guys right in front of the punter), I was wondering if a strategy of “everybody hit one guy and knock him into the punter” would work. It seems fairly easy to get a couple guys back to that level, we just have to set it up to where it is a couple hard hitters (Bowman and someone perhaps). Even if the punter already has the punt off, you can still effectively and legally rough him.

It's not a personnel problem.
The problem is 80% scheme, 20% personnel.

agreed
when you put D-1A starters from a team like Penn State on special teams and the result is finishing almost dead last in the league, you’ve got scheme problems not personel problems. Not only that, we’ve had all season to practice and get it right, and it’s not getting any better…
I could see blaming personel if that was a bunch of 3rd string freshman running around out there…

Maybe the personnel should stop shuffling after the ball and start hitting someone. Hard.
