PSU Considering New Annual Season Ticket Surcharges
David Jones with the story. An excerpt:
In order to accommodate some of the displaced, a section of the best student seats in Beaver Stadium will be taken from the undergrads and given to Nittany Lion Club donors.
These are the planned increases per seat, per season:
* Season ticket holders who sit between the 40-yard lines would be required to pay $600.
* Those who sit between the 40s and the goal lines would be asked for $400.
* Those who sit around the end zones outside of the goal lines would be asked for $100.
* Section ED would be emptied of students, many of whom would be upperclassmen, and given to Nittany Lion Club members whose seats are moved.

I'm fine with it
If it means the crowd gets to SEE GOOD TEAMS PLAY.
Sadly I don’t think that will be the case.

the funny part is they take effect in 2011 when we have Alabama coming to town, so of course that’s enough to tip the scales in favor of mild dissatisfaction. Then in 3 years when we have another home schedule like this year’s people will have forgotten about it and it’ll just be status quo.
The part that bothers me most is this will make sure season ticket holders have to be wealthy. Suddenly the stadium is full of guys in top hats and monocles who are more interested in the stock ticker then the damn score.
I’m kidding, it’s still not that outrageous. Yet.

I don't understand seating licenses
Why not just raise the per game ticket prices? Anyone? Bueller?

I am not understanding I don't think.
Is this in addition to the money I have to donate to have the right to buy season tickets?
So my seats 1 row from the top in WAU would be $400 donation plus $55/ticket/game/seat plus another $400 because my section looks at the endzone line?
Junny, the reason they don’t raise ticket prices is that would make tickets between the 40 yd lines approx $150 a game! People will not pay that but they will pay these fees kind of like the bag fees airlines put in.

Why buy season tickets?
So you can gain access to games like Directional Midwestern State or Coastal Southeastern State? People pretty much give those tickets away even if you do want to go.
Save the extra coin you would spend on surcharges and spend it by purchasing tickets on the one or two home games worth attending each year.

Wow.
It all makes sense now. They screw up the student ticket system with an exchange that charges fees for transferring tickets, and makes it harder to get into the stadium, reducing student attendance. Then when you want to implement this new “license” you can justify it by letting people who don’t want to pay more move to seats that are now occupied by students, and you can justify taking student seats away by pointing to the wretched student section attendance this season. Could Tim Curley be that devious? I don’t know. All I know is that my buddy, who is a season ticket holder and has seats in the northwest corner of the stadium may not be able to afford his tickets any more. He teaches middle school and is as die hard a PSU fan as I’ve ever known, and the thought that he may not be able to afford to go to games any more is disheartening.

Interesting fact
This article talks of emptying section ED of students, but says nothing about EDU. If true, this would lead to quite the interesting set-up with about 80-rows of students in EDU directly above 60 rows of new ultra-premium season tickets in ED. I’m sure those fans will really love it when the student “spirit” starts raining down on them.
I’m not surprised to see this but am torn about how to react. On one hand, if it’s not going to take effect until 2011 that means I get to keep my Senior section seats and spend most of my time in ED for my third straight year (It’s a nice perk of being a law/graduate student); and will open up more paying seats meaning a lower NLC number to get them meaning I get the chance to try and afford them sooner after graduation. But on the other hand, I feel like this will dilute the blue-collar part of the fan base, crank up the resale price of the few games worth going to as fans try to recoup the fees, and worst of all make games out of reach for alot of fans, especially fans wanting to bring their kids which will have a direct negative impact on the next generation of fans.
Is it too wishful of thinking that basketball starts bringing in enough money to avert this?
