Stanford beats USC, why doesn't ESPN.com or ABC care?

I just find it odd that Stanford upsets the almighty USC ending any hopes they had at all of their streaks, and yet, ESPN doesn't have this on their main front page. ABC didn't show any highlights in the post game wrap up after the ND loss (maybe I'm posting this just to type those last two words). SI thinks this is a big deal (as they should).

I have a suspicion that USC losing will get even less play with the talk of ND firing Charlie Wide.

My problem is that I have no idea why ESPN/ABC would (in my eyes) try to hide this... is it just me??

I swear to Zug

I will murder someone tomorrow if USC is STILL in the top 20. THREE LOSSES! 2/3 to mediocre teams as well! Props to Stanford for exposing the second coming of Tebow, Barkley for a spoiled little overhyped baby. The voters kept Oklahoma in the top 25 for a few weeks with three losses, and I see NO justification for USC being ranked any higher than 20. They don’t deserve it. This Zug damn system is getting ridiculous if USC still isn’t going to be punished for their 2 mediocre losses (one being a complete blowout, thanks Stanford!).

You'll be disappointed

I bet they’ll be somewhere around 17. And it’ll be justified as “well, Stanford is pretty good. They dominated Oregon, too”. It took 4 losses to knock Oklahoma out, and Virginia Tech is still top 20 despite their 3.

Isn't this a good thing?

That USC getting spanked isn’t a top story?

I think

that we just want to hear all of the pundits admit that their love child USC sucks.

Let's take the time to look at this in full

And I’ll make some points that I made in my rankings comment from last night. First, there are only 21 teams with 2 for fewer losses, so there will have to be some 3-loss teams that make their way into the top 25. Basically, USC will get some benefit from college football being much more “even” this year, I guess. I’ll focus on the USA Today poll, since that’s the one that matters.

USC was ranked #10 last week. All 9 teams ahead won this week. Behind them, #12, 13, 14, 15, and 19 all lost. (2 of those losses were against top 10 teams.) In my view, LSU, Penn State, Oregon, and Okie State all easily jump ahead of USC, putting USC at 14 right now. In my view, I think Wisconsin and V-Tech both deserve the jump, and I think the voters will agree too – dropping USC now to 16.

Here’s where things get cloudy. In my estimation, Stanford makes the jump ahead – beating two top 25 teams in back-to-back weeks, and now having the head-to-head advantage over USC. Drops to 17th. But that’s probably the last team I can reasonably predict the voters moving ahead of USC – right or wrong, everyone is going to come up with their own “reasoning” for this crap.

For me, I think the losses by Iowa and Utah are better, so I keep them ahead of USC; I believe Oregon State has the better resume, so they’re ahead of USC; and Arizona, BYU, and Clemson all have similar wins/losses to be about even with USC. I have USC around 23, but I can see the voters keeping them anywhere from 15-25 at this point. Again, this 3rd tier of teams is so tight that the voters can come up with radically different ballots and have decent reasoning to back it up. And this is why I’m thankful for the statistical rankings.

Would not be surprised if they are still ranked higher than us

A college team full of second string NFL players has a lot more clout than a team with a better record against cupcakes.

And ask yourself this: Can Penn State beat USC this year? A lot, if not all, sports experts will say no.

Hey look at that

I didn’t do too shabby! Wait….is that a good thing? Anywho, here are my gripes – mostly minor:

1) Can’t see an argument for Okie State ahead of us. We have the better losses, and the wins for both teams aren’t anything special.
2) Get Houston out of the top 25. As of right now, they aren’t even in the position to play in their conference championship game. And if you can’t even play for the C-USA championship, you don’t belong in the top 25. I’m sorry.
3) Utah shouldn’t have been hit so hard. Their two losses are to Oregon and TCU, and with no major wins, they are in essence Penn State/Wisconsin/Okie State all over again.

Temple is at to 23 votes in the AP, and 17 in the Coaches’.

We should be #13 or #14

Right with Wisconsin. Iowa should be ahead of both of us.

LSU can kiss my ass.

People are dumb

Honestly. forget Iowa/Penn St/Wisky. Look at Oregon. Well ahead of Stanford despite being destroyed by them. At this point in the season, that’s just dumb.

It never gets to be easy

Fresno State

which after their loss to Nevada this week, is becoming less and less of a quality win.

I’ll use Sagarin for now, but I’m very close to retracting my point that Wiscy should be ahead of PSU. Again, both have the same losses (Iowa and Ohio State), and I’m going to overlook the Big Ten schedules because beyond the top 4, it’s a mish-mash of suck. So the only way to really compare is with the OOC wins. And after this past weekend, Penn State’s wins take a slight advantage in Sagarin’s rankings.

Wiscy has wins over Fresno State, N. Illinois, and Wofford (ELO ranked 52, 89, and 172 respectively). Hawaii is up-coming and ranked 105 currently.

Penn State has wins over Temple, Syracuse, Eastern Illinois and Akron (ELO ranked 46, 86, 138, and 141 respectively). Again, the differences are minor, even if you call a Wiscy win over Hawaii. But the blurry differences between us and Wiscy are now even more blurred, so I feel better about putting Penn State ahead.

In terms of your point, Iowa should be ahead of PSU and Wiscy anyway.

Clarification

USC is 18th in the BCS rankings.

Which I think still puts them in the very distant running for the end-of-year top 14 and BCS eligibility. If those douchebags get an at-large, I will go apeshit.

While I agree media bias would bump them into a BCS bowl if possible

I find it hard to see them getting in with 3 losses. The only BCS teams you see get into a BCS bowl with >2 losses are playing in the Orange Bowl. I don’t doubt it will happen, but I see some major backlash if it does.

by dawsonPSU10 on Nov 16, 2009 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

When I wrote that the BCS poll wasn't out

clearly the voters aren’t the only ones with the hard ons for USC, the comp’s do to, since both AP and Coaches (I know AP doesn’t count) both had USC in the 20s.

by dawsonPSU10 on Nov 16, 2009 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

AP POLL IS MEANINGLESS.

Why do they still do stories about it, and make big announcements? It’s garbage. Here are my rankings: 1- Penn State, 2 (tie)- every other team in 1-A. That is just as important to the post season.
