Um

That…seems awful to me, as a former student. There is a reason that the freshmen section is currently buried in the corner of the end zone. Those seats suck. So YAY, let’s put all the students there and try to spin it as “hey, we’re making that end zone more formidable!”

No, chances are, through seat licensing and this shifting of students, you’re going to make us Michigan. Only the richer, quieter, older people are going to be able to afford regular season seats. And if the students can’t show up now, they aren’t going to pay $eleventy in transfer fees to see half the field.

But hey, gotta get paid.

That is terrible

So to hell with the tradition of having the students yell “We Are” across the field and the alumni return “Penn State.”

I guess the new chant should be “We are” and the return “Greedy B@st@rds”

How could Nixon know so little about Watergate and so much about football ?

by psupride on Nov 16, 2009 8:19 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Couldn’t it just as easily be done as south endzone does “We are” and northern part of the stadium does “Penn State”? Doesn’t seem like an issue to me.

by Laaaaazzz on Nov 16, 2009 9:09 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sure it COULD be done

Also it just as easily could be done by responding “PSU” when someone yells “We Are” The fact of the matter was the tradition of the east side yelling We are and the West side responding Penn State.

Maybe the chant should be "Where is" ?

After the students performance on Saturday, they have pretty much abandoned any right to complain.

but now they are giving them 800 MORE seats in a worse section. How many will opt to watch from home or a bar or stay at the tailgate now?

by psupride on Nov 16, 2009 9:18 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

why

would they add student seats. it appears they only need about 10,000 seats to accomodate those who actually show up. Our student section is pathetic.

JoePa in '09

by JGuiher on Nov 16, 2009 8:47 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

So when students complain they can say “relax we ADDED MORE SEATS”

They’re giving students more seats but making more money. The value of the seats the students are being given don’t account for the value of the BETTER SEATS they lost.

Also, I suspect the sizes of sections are different so you’d have to put 800 alumni in a section with students.

by PSUMBBtrumpet on Nov 16, 2009 1:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

also

if they shift the students to the endzone, this makes less endzone seats for the general public and more seats between the 40 and endzones so they can get even more of that “its not a PSL because it is only year to year” money.

JoePa in '09

by JGuiher on Nov 16, 2009 8:50 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that’s pretty much the exact point. Since they are going to be requiring higher donations to be eligible for sideline seats among season ticket holders, this opens up more such seats for them to sell.

I do hope they at least keep their word about using the extra revenue to keep student ticket prices stable.

Seriously

I was unaware that it now costs a lost more for the school to let kids stand on bleachers. “Keeping prices down” usually is paired with a rise in cost of goods. I’m an unaware of a rise in cost of goods.

I’ve been ragging on the student section all year but this is crap. Expanding the student section is also the opposite of what they should have done.

Um, tuition? Tuition is the goods rising in price.

The reason for the cash grab (other than the fact that PSU is a money grubbing whore) is that tuition keeps going up at a sky-rocketing rate. You want to fund full & partial scholarships for 29 sports team, plus fund travel, equipment, recruiting, etc.?

You either raise the price or sell more tickets. Or, in this case… BOTH.

Bingo

Do we really need football funding an ultimate frisbee team? I have a hard time defending PSU needing 8 home games every other year in football because we need to pay for all of our other athletic teams. I mean, it’s great we win boatloads of national championships in a lot of the secondary sports, but we can’t cut back on some of them somewhere?

Hey!

I have a friend who used to be on that ultimate frisbee team! They’re like a big sport and stuff. They’re not an NCAA sport though, I don’t think they really get funded that much, but I’m not sure. I’ve also got a friend who’s the president of the rifle club, which isn’t an NCAA sport, and I know both rifle club and the ultimate frisbee run some of the booths around the stadium on game day. Btw, I know your point wasn’t specific to ultimate frisbee, but imma just sayin’.

by PSUisMyHeart on Nov 16, 2009 6:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think club sports & IM

are funded by the athletic department, but the funding they get compared to a varsity team is peanuts. And, varsity teams like tennis & track get very little compared to revenue generating teams (football, bball), or teams with big pocket donors (wrestling, baseball).

by Tailgate Shogun on Nov 16, 2009 6:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I just talked to my Ultimate Frisbee friend about it

it’s a pittance. He thinks it might come from a % of the sales they get for running the booths around the stadium though, but isn’t sure.

Tuition isn't going up because the school is losing money on student pricing for prime seats

Tuition is going up because the school bought a new business school building not too long ago, just dumped $110 million on new law school buildings on two campuses (one of which, admittedly, I attend), another $X million on a science complex, and is planning to build a new softball field for $Y million when the science complex is finished. Not to mention renovation costs to adapt the old UP law school building back into a dorm and whatever it is they’re doing to renovate the old science buildings when Millenium’s done.

by Tube on Nov 16, 2009 6:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree

well, maybe a little. A lot of the bricks & mortar projects come from donor pockets. However, no one has named the business building yet, so that’s $5-$10 million or so not sitting in PSU’s bank account.

Plenty of things go into the tuition hike, though. Increasingly decreased state funding and health care costs certainly don’t help. Writing up students for underage drinking can only get PSU so far!

by Tailgate Shogun on Nov 16, 2009 6:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That's the thing, though

Do we really need a new softball field (or science complex, or law school buildings, or Smeal building) when state funding is decreasing/health care is getting more expensive/etc? I understand that donors will give less for the non-visible stuff like faculty salaries and benefits than they will for new buildings, but tens/hundreds of millions less?

All these buildings were paid for from what I understood (MSC, law building, etc.)

So they aren’t the reasons PSU is “desperate” for student’s and alumni’s cash. Even if they stopped building at this point, it wouldn’t matter since the building and financing was already taken care of years ago. I sincerely doubt we’re currently paying for that building now. As for a new softball stadium, that hasn’t been built, and the project should probably be scrapped. Yes, their “stadium” sucks, but if the AD is that desperate for cash, they probably shouldn’t be building stadiums for teams only a handful of people are actually going to watch.

I'm sorta with you

though I actually prefer corner seats at least 20 rows up. you get the same basic advantage of the end zone (looking up/down field, seeing the holes open in the lines), but also get some of the benefits of sideline seats (being able to see down the line in the redzone).

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 16, 2009 12:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm in favor of this PSL thing, in principle.

There are a LOT of older people who sit near midfield who have been giving the bare minimum for decades. Those seats should cost a hell of a lot more. I sure as hell wouldn’t get season tickets for Penn State these days, but plenty of people still want them.

None of this is going to stop PSU from scheduling the Indiana States of the world. Let’s just get that out of our heads right now.

What did you expect?

Really? Did you expect the students to get more seats along the 50 yard line? Those are prime seats. And you think PSU is going to sell those seats for a quarter of the cost to students? Come on.

I honestly don’t understand the bitching here. Students complained about there not being enough tickets for them and now they are opening up 800 new seats. If you want to sit on the 50 yard line then why don’t you pony up and pay what everyone else in the stadium is paying.

by catesinator on Nov 16, 2009 12:23 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Because it’s important to give students a strong experience AS A STUDENT so they WANT to buy those seats when they have the money later. PSU doesn’t give students 20,000 seats out of charity. The student section:

- makes the game more enjoyable for all fans by being loud and energetic (as long as you aren’t a cranky old man right next to them)
- gives us great publicity (all the #1 student section jazz)
- will give these students warm fuzzies after they graduate and get a letter from PSU asking them to open up their checkbook

You can nickel and dime students all you want, but it won’t compare to the money you make sucking them into the Nittany Lion Cult when they have the real big bucks to give later down the line.

The real fix to this is not allowing some kid who goes to some branch campus to get season tickets. I know people every year who go to some branch campus nearly 4 hours away who gets the tickets then only come for 1 or 2 games.

I completely disagree about the branch campus

idea. I went to UP, and to every game during college – but the branchies that I do know (especially the ‘toona kids) came to the games, as much if not more than my UP compatriots. I really would have thought you all could figure this one out – the reason the student section isn’t full – is because they can’t sell their tickets – to other students, alumni, boy/girlfriends and family, or that co-ed from Clarion they met Friday night at the Saloon. Sure you can get “guest” tickets, but seriously, how many people actually do that? Some of my most faithful football friends would never have been able to get into the game; they spent their entire fall seeking out ticket postings and running around campus on Friday nights and negotiating with some kid in Shunk who kept a handgun in his desk drawer.

by Tailgate Shogun on Nov 17, 2009 6:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Personally, I love this. I want to give this plan a big kiss.

1. So the students have to move to the end zone. What other stadium in America gives 1/4 of it’s premium seats to students? I don’t know, but I’d wager none. At least we put all students in one place, unlike OSU.
2. I don’t get the argument that we can’t do the ‘We Are’ cheer. Life will go on, regardless of whether you need to learn new words or not.
3. I don’t get the argument that students will enjoy themselves less, therefore be less willing to donate/return in the future. A large part of the student body doesn’t care about the games – they just go to socialize. Those that do care will be coming back in the future regardless if they’re in section SC or EB, because they’re true fans. If we’re really the #1 student section, they can be just as loud from the end zone as they can from the 30.
4. Why should people get to sit on the 50, just because ‘they always have’? Why not reward those who provide the operating capital for our athletic department? If you paid $5k for a plane ticket, would you be happy sitting in coach just because someone else has ‘always sat in first class’ and took the last first class seat?

I appreciate the loyalty of the long term fans, but if they’re truly loyal they’ll be happy to sit anywhere to cheer on the Lions. Especially considering that they’ve skated by for decades while contributing nothing for the past 40 years.

The only people this hurts? The people who willingly sit in the south end zone, but will now be moved to wherever to make room for the students. Maybe the scalpers who buy season tix, but then again maybe not.

I will be curious to see if these extra 800 student tickets are available for the games where there is huge student demand (Alabama, OSU) or for those where no alumni care to buy them (Youngstown St, Bellefonte HS). I’m guessing the latter, but what do I know.

Respectfully yours,
Future Resident of the 50 Yard Line seats

Loved the plane ticket analogy!

And thanks for the fresh perspective. At first read, I was thinking I’m probably getting screwed, do I really want to continue to pay (‘give’ to use proper NLC lingo) for the right to buy tix? But this helps remind me that I’m a person who might benefit. Maybe we’ll get opps to do the anti-George Jefferson? I never used to think in terms of a ‘five year plan,’ and this year I missed more games than I intended, but with two little boys on the way, I can more clearly see further down the 20-year road, where there’s likely a continued grand outdoor experience to share with my family.

Here’s to meeting you on the 50 for a big high five!

I never used to think in terms of a ‘five year plan,’ and this year I missed more games than I intended, but with two little boys on the way, I can more clearly see further down the 20-year road, where there’s likely a continued grand outdoor experience to share with my family.

or maybe just the first 4 letters of the word

ZING!

"Every player we have, someone—maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone—poured their life and soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world." - Joe Paterno

I actually like being up there. Great view of how the plays are breaking down.

By the way, I may have missed it in the article

But where is the band going to sit in this new scenario? Anyone know?

TBD

but the smart money is where they were last season, right above the tunnel.

I'm not an engineer or physicist, but wouldn't that make more acoustic sense

than having them in the corner of the endzone? Granted, it’s probably easier to get on/off the field from where they are now.
