The refs really are terrible and biased
Brian Cook (I'm assuming of mgoblog fame) has this little writeup and cites some study where an economics professor shows quite a statistical anomoly on how fouls are called.

If you’re on the road, or leading, or in better shape foul-wise, you’re about to get screwed
Or if you’re on the road and leading Ohio State. Hightower will decide to screw you over with a bulls**t basket interference, followed by a bulls**t goaltending call, changing the game, momentum, etc.
DO YOU HAVE PRIDE, DANNY?
Ugh
Seriously just seeing Ed Hightower’s face makes me go blind with rage.
There is nothing, nothing more infurating then a ref who believes his job is to govern the flow and outcome of the game. Hightower doesn’t see himself as a ref, he is the judge, jury, and executioner. When he’s on the court, we’re not watching a basketbal game, we’re watching an Ed Hightower game.
I hope all the bad things in life happen to Ed Hightower, and Ed Hightower alone. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go put some water in Ed Hightower’s mama’s dish.

Everybody knows baskeball refs suck
but I can’t stand when the announcers constantly side with the refs. In some circumstances, it seems the announcers have an agreement not to rip on the refs.

Sure he does, that’s why it keeps repeating itself in the monitor

That video linked to this video, which gets better towards the end:

"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

I mentioned it in a thread a few days ago
but there really should be some national organization of refs so we don’t get conference/location/alumni bias in calling the games. It’s getting pretty pathetic how biased the refs are for their own conferences and teams.
All this being said
basketball has always struck me as damn near impossible to ref. You’ve got contact on every play, flopping it for some reason socially acceptable, and that’s not even bringing up the whole traveling thing. I don’t envy that job.
