Where do these schools get the money

for all these uni combos. Like does Penn State wear new unis every game? How many, let’s say blue, home jerseys do we have for Daryl Clark? When I played, not for the Lions, we had one home jersey for the season. If it ripped, the equipment manager sewed it up!

Meh

One dropped pass and one shanked kick and one missed block on a run in overtime (if their FB makes the block, would have been a 10 yard gain)

If this was PSU, we’d be saying PSU was better

One fumble, one missed FG and a couple picks in the red zone

and Michigan would have won the game. Does it mean they are better?

Ok, so when we lose to Iowa

it’s because they’re better. When they lose, it’s because they got unlucky?

C’mon, I can play that game too. If it’s not for a blocked punt we beat them.

The truth is, Iowa has lost two of it’s last three and looked like crap today while Penn State has won 2 of the last 3 and 7 of 8. Penn State has progressed, Iowa has regressed.

Or have they just gotten luckier?

Look, you can sell me the “winners” thing when you’re undefeated, but the last few weeks, I think things caught up to them more than anything else.

The fact that they’ve played so many close games and won most of them shows that they’re tought, but not exactly as awesome as we’re making them out to be.

by ReadingRambler on Nov 21, 2009 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

We were utterly dominated by Ohio State’s lines. Iowa wasn’t. This doesn’t sound like progression to me.

If we played Iowa again, I have no confidence we would win. They were winning the field position battle and Clark was rattled. Everyone in the stadium could feel it.

"I don't know. I don't know. [waves hand dismissively] First, you'd have to tell me what a 'BCS' is. I don't know."

Why?

PSU was shell shocked by the punt block. I thought they played pretty well until they got behind, and things unraveled.

And I don’t care how they played against OSU. We played better against Minnesota and MSU didn’t we? And Michigan? And Northwestern? And Indiana?

Look, I feel like you’re discouting the entire rest of the season and focusing on two games to say Iowa is better, and I disagree

I thought they played pretty well until they got behind, and things unraveled.

Were we watching different games? After our first two drives, there was no offense in the 1st half. We managed to get into position for a field goal in the 3rd and missed. No offense after that. I was fidgeting.

We played better against Minnesota and MSU didn’t we? And Michigan? And Northwestern? And Indiana?

None of these teams have great defensive lines. None of these teams have a bump and run capable secondaries.

We lose to teams with dominant defensive lines. I understand this seems silly, but Iowa’s “bad” performances matter little to me. Their defensive line has not regressed. Our offensive line has not progressed (Iowa’s has).

(I also wouldn’t count Indiana. We didn’t play much better than Iowa did)

Bringing the battle to the bottom Rambler

Look, I watched the Iowa game through the same lense I viewed the 2005 OSU game. We were going to kick the ball around and play defense with the lead we had, and it worked out fine until one big play on special teams.

Iowa didn’t “dominate” us, they made one big play, and we lost our composure from there. In fact, their only offensive TD came off a Clark pick. We played a “don’t make the big mistake” game, and we made the big mistake, and they won. I don’t think that means they dominated us.

And I don’t have the slighest idea how you can say the offensive line hasn’t gotten better after basically having no running game in 3 of the first 4. Yeah, they struggled against OSU, but they’ve gotten much better through the course of the season.

I don’t care how good Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Northwestern’s D-line’s are. We beat all of their teams as a whole comfortably, and Iowa didn’t. Again, you’re putting two much emphasis on two games, one of which probably isn’t an accurate barometer of where the two teams are today.

Well OSU is safe...

…it’s about Penn State vs. Iowa, and I feel like our body of work is better than theirs.

They struggled down the stretch, and won close games all season, even against teams like UNI. When you’re undefeated, it shows toughness. When you’ve come unraveled at the end, it shows you probably aren’t that good.

Penn State played 10 very good football games this year, and I don’t think you can say that about Iowa. Consider that, and consider what we bring to the table economically, and I think the choice is pretty clear.

That said, I’m mentally preparing myself to get the shaft.

Ok, I'm going in circles now
Iowa didn’t "dominate" us, they made one big play, and we lost our composure from there. In fact, their only offensive TD came off a Clark pick. We played a "don’t make the big mistake" game, and we made the big mistake, and they won. I don’t think that means they dominated us.

If I said they dominated us, I meant they dominated us up front. There was no offense on our part. Iowa was going to win that football game. I felt that before the punt block and I still feel that’s the truth. And the big mistake was caused by Iowa’s coaches finding a weak spot and attacking us with that Clayborn monster. Kudos to them.

Has Iowa regressed up front? No. Can Iowa still shut down receivers with bump and run? Yes.

Has Penn State’s offensive line performed well against a dominant defensive line yet? No.

Yeah, they struggled against OSU, but they’ve gotten much better through the course of the season.

I remember before the OSU game that there was a sense of confidence that the line had improved. It hadn’t. It still hasn’t improved enough to defeat Iowa.

You can respond to this post if you want, but it’s getting late and I’m tired.

Um...

Shouldn’t “dominant” defensive lines play dominantly against mediocre ones? One bad performance doesn’t invalidate what happened in the rest of the season, you know.

And tell me how exactly Iowa was “going” to win the game. They didn’t drive the field on us either! They scored their TDs on a punt block, and a short field after an interception. You can easily argue that our d-line was almost as good as theirs was that night, just less fortunate with the situations they were put in.

Oh, I can't resist
One bad performance doesn’t invalidate what happened in the rest of the season, you know.

Two bad performances. We haven’t beaten a team with a dominant line. Iowa’s defensive line has played fine most of the year. They shut down Wisconsin in the second half, Michigan didn’t run at them or pass from the pocket, Northwestern did the same, IU ran quick passes, Ohio State fought them to a stalemate, and they beat up Minnesota.

And tell me how exactly Iowa was "going" to win the game.

Can’t. Couldn’t then, still can’t. But I could feel it. The stadium sounded so quiet.

Iowa beat us because they found a matchup weakness. That makes them the better all around team in my book.

Fourth because for the Tulane game, I got back to my apartment from skipping my last class to go to the Waffle Shop with my friends before break, saw we were down 62 to 58, got all depressed, read the open thread which made me feel ever more depressed, and then took a nap. When I woke up from my nap, I was in a bad mood, but couldn’t remember why, then I remembered and got all depressed again. It really felt like we lost that game twice lol.

Rambler

You’re contradicting yourself.

If Iowa’s D-Line has been “fine” most of the year, then so has our O-line. Why are you punishing us for not showing up a cuple of times and not them? I don’t get it.

And Iowa didn’t exploit a matchup weakness. They only out rushed us 163-111.

Penn State had a lead, and as they’ve done time and again in big games, played to protect it instead of going for the throat. It blew up in our face royally on one big special teams play, we lost our composure which led to losing the game.

The difference in that game was us losing it after falling behind, and not some vast superiority on Iowa’s part.

That one game with those specific set of circumstances doesn’t invalidate the fact that Iowa beat Michigan, Indiana, and Michigan Stateby the skin of their teeth, lost to Northwestern, and stuggled against a Deckerless Minnesota team.

The season is 12 games for a reason. We played better than they did most of the season.

Ok, no "late night ranking" from me this week

I just tried to do it and got lost after #14. I thank LSU/Ole Miss and the rest of the Pac-10 for screwing with my head. Interesting things to note:

Still have 6 undefeated teams – very rare for this late in the season. And with just 2 one-loss teams, there are more undefeated teams than one-loss teams – another very rare occurrence.

There are 10 two-loss teams, half are from BCS conferences (tOSU, Iowa, PSU, OkSt, Oregon) and obviously half are from non-BCS (Temple, CMU, BYU, Utah, Houston).

There are 20 three-loss teams, which basically means that if you’re not in the top 25, you’re not bad, you’re just in a big mix of mediocrity. There are 5 non-BCS teams here (Navy, Ohio, Troy, MTSU, Nevada), so if you wanted to pull them out of consideration, I wouldn’t object much. But that’s still 15 BCS teams with 3 losses.

With that said, I expect Wiscy to fall out of the top 25 completely, LSU to take a big dive down the charts, and Stanford is on the edge of falling out. Cal and Ole Miss make moves up the top 25, and Temple is still stuck behind UNC and Nebraska in trying to make it into the top 25.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

Just got back from a wedding and watched the second half.

After waiting all that agonizing time thinking about how we were tied 7-7. I was hoping Joe would call TOs in the end.

Also, HAHAHAHAHAHANOTREDAMEHAHAHAHAHA.

bcs situation tonight

bcs guru says we will be #13, but given Iowa and OSU lackluster wins (on national TV), combined with our blow out, I believe we could be at #12 and only slightly behind OSU. With a Pitt loss to cincy (or possibly WVU in the backyard brawl) and a potential OSU loss to OU at home (a much different team at home than on the roads, Stoops record at home is unreal), we most likely are #10/#11 going into BCS selection. That, combined with Paterno’s Godfather reference in this presser last night, gets us into Fiesta or Orange
