BCS Situation for PSU
BCS Guru website says we will be #13 tonight, but given Iowa and OSU lackluster wins (on national TV), combined with our blow out in a tough away game in which we were favored by 3, I believe we could be surprisingly at #12 (ahead of Iowa) and only slightly behind OSU. With a Pitt loss to cincy (or possibly WVU in the backyard brawl) and a potential OSU loss to OU at home (a much different team at home than on the road, Stoops record at home is unreal), we most likely are #10/#11 going into BCS selection in early December. That, combined with Paterno’s legendary Godfather reference in this presser last night, gets us into Fiesta or Orange. That is my take

no shot at fiesta. it’s orange or bust. the ratings argument is non-existent in fiesta as fox is leaving the bowl biz. arizona is lone retirement destination for iowans. iowa is ranked higher in bcs. iowa won head to head. but good luck. i just don’t see it.

Well last I checked...
They’re still in the bowl buisness through this bowl season, so they have an interest in a big rating.

True, but I don't think Penn State gets much higher ratings than Iowa
I have nothing to back my opinion up because I don’t know where to look for the data, but if the Outback Bowl would take Iowa over Michigan in 2006, I would think Iowa’s probably does well ratings wise.

Penn State vs Iowa - TV Ratings
The Wall Street Journal did a study a couple of years back (can’t find it to link to it…but I didn’t look all that hard) comparing schools based on tv ratings only. Penn State ranked among the top schools. Iowa was nowhere to be found. The reasoning was simple…Penn State (and Michigan, Florida, USC, Ohio State, Texas, etc.) have tremendous tradition, large alumni bodies, and are located in populous states. Schools like Va Tech and WVU traditionally do not rank well in tv ratings. Keep in mind none of this factors in the number of fans that buy tix to the games…it is just tv ratings.

WSJ Article Located
psu in the w-b located the WSJ rankings article. PSU boasted a +3.3 tv ratings differential while Iowa came in with a -4.1% tv ratings differential…not so good for Iowa. Additionally, the WSJ indicated that “Two of last three Hawkeye bowls had ratings of at least 20% below average.”

That’s wrong. Bowl games are for profit entities that are designed to increase tourism in their host cities. Number of bodies attending is a huge concern to the game.
It’s the TV networks that care about the ratings. The Bowls themselves only care enough to keep the netowrks happy.
Land Grant or bust! Worst 10-2 team ever? Beat Michigan State.
Jesse, I was not saying that the BCS bowls don’t factor in the number of fans that buy tickets to the game when selecting a team. I was talking about the WSJ study, which only factored in tv ratings. I was clarifying that the WSJ did NOT include tickets sales so that readers would know that the WSJ study was not showing the whole picture.

TV ratings
Bowls most certainly do care about TV ratings because higher ratings enable them to sell their broadcast rights for more money to the networks. They may not care in a single shot for one game, but collectively over time, TV ratings are very important perhaps more important than ticket sales considering how much money comes from the TV deals and sponsorship (which is also more valuable with higher TV ratings).
You are all looking too simplistically at ratings
the ratings differential between Iowa this year and Penn State this year is negligible. That WSJ article is irrelevant for this year because it is a generic, historical overview. ESPN historically does not do as well as CBS. Big deal. When you get down to a more granular level it gets far more interesting.
What hurts Penn State this year is that it has not been inside the Top Ten since very early in the season. They have not been part of the National Championship discussion at all. Iowa, on the other hand, has been carrying the Big Ten’s place in that discussion almost the whole season, and has played three prime-time games (Penn St., Michigan, Michigan State) and won them all. They had the largest 11am kickoff rating of the season for ANY footbal game at that time slot, playing Indiana of all people. TV people have no problem with this Iowa team. This year Penn State does not have a star player who’s placed them on the national stage in terms of chatter either (nor does Iowa for that matter).
The bowl selection will come down to the bowl execs perception of which team will bring the largest number of fans, sell the most tickets. Ratings are a non-starter this year and even in other years in apples to apples comparison, Iowa has outperformed Penn State. Look very recently at the Alamo Bowl for example.
In 2007 in the Alamo Bowl had Penn State and that game was a 2.7 rating
In 2006 in the Alamo Bowl had Iowa and that game was a 5.9 rating

The Alamo Bowl
It may be important to note that Texas played in the 2006 Alamo Bowl. We played a mediocre A&M squad.
It’s possible that a better comparison would be 2009 Outback Bowl versus 2007 Outback Bowl.

Iowa – LSU Cap One Bowl had the highest non-BCs bowl rating (by far)…so Iowa can pull a rating. That’s my point.

Oh. My. God.
The Fiesta Bowl is going to take Iowa, probably/unless…
The Orange Bowl is going to take Penn State if it can.
This is not fair. This is true. That is all.
I say let's rock the Orange Bowl, because nobody will remember in five years anyway.
yeah
They’re still selling ad time, probably starting Dec 6th in the evening. Saying the ratings argument is non-existent is crazy. As far as the rankings, h2h, and any other “deserve” factors, none of that matters. Not saying we’re a lock, but either fan base claiming to have some major advantage is delusional.

Well
The talking heads are going to be lobbying for Iowa and/or Boise over Penn State pretty hard. I think they should stick to playing music, but rest assured they’ll be weighing in against Penn State.
Land Grant or bust! Worst 10-2 team ever? Beat Michigan State.
True
But to go from there to “no shot at Fiesta” for Penn State is crazy.

We’re not on a “road to nowhere” or busy “burning down the house” like the are in Ann Arbor and South Bend.

I echo this sentiment
Fiesta will take either OkSt or Iowa. I’d be shocked—SHOCKED—if they took PSU.
NittanyWhiteOut.com. Arguably the second best Penn State blog I know of.
I don't expect them to pick us. And I think they'd be better served with Iowa, even if Pitt was the better team.
But I can’t say I’d be shocked by any decisions the bowls make.

Wouldn't that be the ultimate kick
to the giblets for Pitt. Assuming Pitt does not win the Big East, PSU is picked up for a BCS bowl while Pitt slums it out over the holidays in the Poulan Weedeater bowl.
