Looking Forward....Backup QB most popular guy on Campus

Its never too early to take a look at next year.

I've compliled a list of 'players of note' who are coming back. 'Players of Note' means that I think I remember seeing them doing something good on TV at least once during the year.

BEHOLD THE FUTURE!

Star-divide

DEFENSE:  16 players of note.  Looking Good!

SECONDARY:   Astorino, Morris, Sukay, Lynn, (Hodges?)    Solid but needs depth

D-LINE:   Crawford, Lattimore, Ware, Still, Stanley, Latham;    Solid, but needs depth.

LINEBACKER:  Mauti, Stupar, Colasanti, Zordich, Yancich, (Hodges?)     Solid.

Overall, PSU defense should be as good as, or better than this year.  Depth should come from excellent redshirt group plus frosh.

OFFENSE:   12 players of note,  and a BIG BUTT!

O-LINE:Wisniewski, Troutman, Pannell, Stankiewitch. Add Shrive, better than 2008, needs depth.

WIDEOUTS:  Moye, Powell, Brown, Drake, Smith         Solid.

BACKS:  Royster, Green, Beachum, Suhey          Solid; frosh Redd will get some time

QB: Hare Krishna!

Newsome, McGloin?, Bolden and Jones to battle for starting postion. PRAY  Hope for miracle repeat of luck great recruiting with 1st years of Clark and Robinson.

Since Bolden and Jones are two ot the highest-rated QBs PSU has ever enrolled, look forward to the backup being the most popular guy on campus for at least a year or two!

I’m seeing another good year next year.  Hope the vision stays in focus.

Hm....

I think you’re going to see Newsome get the call for the first two games. If he plays well against YSU and Alabama, I think he’ll pretty solidly be the starter, but if he struggles, I bet you see a similiar situation to Michigan where everyone gets a little time under center in the Kent State and Temple games. The guy who plays the best will face Iowa.

What does Bama look like next year?

Ingram going pro? Are we already formulating excuses, or will this be actually a good game?

This is true

I blame this on Bama often having mediocre offenses.

Unless McElroy vastly improves, I would think something like 20-7 or 20-10 and about 40 carries for Ingram.

Yeah

Still, I’ll be holding out hope for 1986 when we shut down the #2 and unbeaten Tide in Tuscaloosa 23-3 (incidentally, our only win over a ranked team that regular season). I don’t think our D will be good enough.

If Royster leaves

I’m pretty concerned about running back. I’m not convinced Green can be the feature back, and Beachum’s injury hurts. Dukes and Redd are intriguing though.

One other thing-TE is a question mark. Can Sczerba and Wedderburn step up?

If nothing else, I’m really curious to see what the offense will look like next year.

IF ROYSTER STAYS

Maybe the coaches will not be concerned with the QB’s health because they have 3 more or less equal choices?

The Michigan coach sure had no qualms about running Forcier because the other guy was there as a backup.

Maybe the offense can be very good, right off the bat, because they actually run the HD and are not concerned about injuries?

Royster stays...

RB’s depth in 2010: Royster, Green, Carter, DUKES!, #23. Red Shirt Redd; they’ll secure him for the future – UNLESS he’s literally outstanding in the spring.

FB: Suhey; RS ZZ.

Beachum: had him the RS too. I have a hard time thinking right now that he would be ready for the spring game – or for that matter, with the potential quality of the other backs – why push him @ risk. Normal aggressive rehab probably won’t have his knee ready to “push” until the 5 or even 7th game. And by that time, he’ll be playing catch-up with the offense. So again, “why” push this. Get him 100%, sit him out and stretch his talents for 2011 and 2012.

Dont forget Dukes

Everyone was raving about him in camps this summer and most reports that he was already physically ready for collegiate play. With a redshirt year under his belt to get accustomed to the mental side of things, I think he could see a lot of playing time if Royster is gone. A combination of Beachum/Carter, Dukes, and Green would be a very solid platoon of RB’s.

yeah how on earth could we hope to replace the 448 yards recieving and 3 touchdowns that God’s Gift provided us this year?

Honestly, I am so terrified about our QB situation (which while we have some silly recruits is sort of unacceptable when you have a 5th year senior leaving – that being the fact that Newsome has about 10 snaps) that I haven’t really focused on any of the other potential losses.

2010 season

I expect an eight win season as the team reloads for 2011 and beyond.

Expect losses to Alabama, Ohio State and Iowa, all away games. Throw in one other loss and you have an invitation to a mid to low level bowl game . Win that game and set the table for 2011 & 2012. In those years expect this team to compete for the Big ten Title and possibly the whole thing in 2012. The recruited talent is that good.

Reg4

by Regulator4 on Nov 23, 2009 8:33 AM EST reply actions

Agree

8 wins seems to be the right place to set the line with probably a berth in the Alamo bowl after a 5-3 Big Ten record.

Guaranteed wins come against Youngstown St, Kent St. Temple, Illinois, IU.
Guaranteed losses come to Alabama, Iowa and Ohio St.

Games up in the air are Minnesota, Michigan, Northwestern and Michigan St. Working in our favor though is that 3 of those games are at home.

I would consider a 9-3 season next year to be a pretty big achievement.

by catesinator on Nov 23, 2009 9:07 AM EST up reply actions

WAAAY too early, but 9-3 should be the goal

Minnesota might be better, but…Tim Brewster. We get Michigan and Northwestern at home. MSU never wins in Happy Valley, but it could happen. I think Northwestern could be a letdown game.

Honestly

next year I expect a 10-3 season overall. I think we go 9-3 in the regular season and win in either the Capital One Bowl, or more likely the Outback Bowl.

Also, I think that Joe from the burg hit nail on the head by saying the backup qb will be the most popular guy on campus… I fully expect to hear screams for both Bolden and Jones all season long… or at least throughout the B10 schedule.

Linebackers are a concern

We are losing 3 good linebackers this year. One of the big time players coming back has an ACL injury. I know this is Linebacker U, but this has to be a big question mark going into next year.

by bcwertz on Nov 23, 2009 10:30 AM EST reply actions

I really do agree

but I’d like to point out that we pretty much have this argument every year and keep getting proved wrong by someone stepping up to fill the void, but this year might be tough with three very good LBs leaving potentially.

by dawsonPSU10 on Nov 23, 2009 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

Much like this season

I expect next year’s losses to come from offensive line woes. Special teams didn’t help us this year, but we scored 7 points against tOSU and 10 against Iowa, with 7 coming on the first play. Nothing consistent there because we couldn’t block anybody. If that continues (and I suspect it might) no one else will matter in the least.

by jimbo2psu on Nov 23, 2009 10:37 AM EST reply actions

Agreed...

Even with an experience offensive line last year, we stuggled offensively for most of the game against Ohio State.

Offensive Line will be a Strong Point next year.

Returning Starters, plus Lettermen with significant playing time coming back.
That’s the most important parameter in measuring the quality of the O Line, the number of games played by these folks.
Defininte BIG improvement over this year.
Running the ball will be a lot easier.

Agreed a thousand fold

After pwning Jesse. this past offseason in the which is the bigger dropoff concern from 08: WR or Oline, I’ll take it one step further this year. Oline will continue to be a bigger concern next year than even the bound-to-be-exciting-and-loud QB Controversy.

My offseason eye will be pointed to Ty Howle. I’m hoping he can impress enough at C to make the coaches feel better about playing Wiz at his natural position of G. Hoping but dubious. If Wiz stays at C, I’ll be looking to see if any of the RSF can beat out Stank, who didn’t exactly overwhelm in his few opportunities at the beginning of the season. Troutman’s clearly more gifted, but his being in the doghouse cost the Oline some extremely much-needed cohesion in the OOC warmups pre-Clayborn, Klug & Binns. Maybe the Alexandria kid, Figueroa? Or Arcidiacono. More likely it’ll be Stank vs. Barham or Terry for starter at RG. I’d be surprised if we see anything other than Pannel at LT, Troutman at LG and Shrive at RT.

Because of his stance on kittens

Seriously, he stands on kittens!

Nah, he just turned out to be a little too oafish. Doesn’t have the ‘it’ needed at the guard position these days, tho I can’t be sure if that it is the mental aspect or athletic one. Watching him pull around and so drastically whiff on the LB or safety he was responsible for just broke my little heart too many times. Maybe he’s a tackle instead? Nah, then I’d be afraid he’d just get pwned by the next broderick binns to come along.

I’m gonna be looking this offseason for news on the youngsters (mushbooger sic). Obviously high on Shrive, as everyone seems to be. I think next year’s My Boy may end up being Figueroa. I’ll let you know after the BW game.

let’s not forget that Newsome is also a top 10 QB for his class, and may be better than the other 2. But yes, the backups are always the most popular guy on the team if the starter ever struggles just a little bit, even if they aren’t actually any better (shudders at recolleciton of calling for Morelli back in the 2005 Northwestern game)
