PrintI'm not sure what the mods have planned, if anything, so I figured I'd pop this up as an open thread. If they want to bump and add, then that sounds like a plan to me.
Games on tap for today include Green Bay at Detroit (currently tied 7-7 in the 2nd quarter), Oakland at Dallas (4:15pm), and NY Giants at Denver (8:20pm). As for college football, you're looking at the Texas-TAMU game at 8pm. As for me, I'm flipping between the football games and the Home Alone marathon on FX.
Oh, and remember to be thankful and all that jazz associated with today. Good family/friends, good football, good eats - can't ask for much more than that! Feel free to take a day off from hate week to spread some love. Then return to hating tomorrow!

We eat kinda late here because Mike’s cousin has to work this morning, but we will for sure be watching the Texas/A&M game! I’m a really big Longhorns fan, but now that I have so many Aggie friends that live around here I feel better about cheering against Texas.

Teams have to stay on top of Texas early
Texas has taken a page out of Penn State’s book and has come out very slow to start some games this season. TAMU had the right idea, but they’re starting to relinquish control. At that point, game’s over.

Let’s say UT loses this game. Then Auburn upsets ’Bama, then Bama turns around and beats Florida in the SEC Champ. game. So UT, Bama, Florida all have one loss. Lets say then that TCU, Boise, and Cincy (and lets add in G-Tech, just as a back-up) all win out. Does Floribama or Texas jump one of the undefeated teams to get back into the MNC?

That might very well solidify the Big East as THE worst conference in college football
you lose to the last place team in the Big Ten that has no defense whatsoever, and a lot of decent offensive weapons but a coach that lacks the skill to pull them together to be successful more than once per year, and you will probably drop 15 spots in the top 25.

I understand the frustration with those conferences.
But I don’t think when you look at professional sports that the best team usually wins. Also, I have worked in pro sports at a time when owners voted for wild cards, and it had nothing to do with “deserve.” It is all about money. I think if you go to an 8 team playoff, you could have the worst team of an 8 end up winning in way more years than is acceptable.

I don’t think that’s true. How often does a team with a worse body of work win the “championship?”
I think it’s a myth and misconception that if and when a playoff happens, that it’s about properly deciding the champion. You know when we’ll get a playoff? When they decide it’s more profitable. And when we do, there will be plenty of years when random 3 loss teams beat a team they may have lost to in the regular season who was previously undefeated. I wish people would stop acting like a playoff is perfect.

The issue with CFB is that, as BB’n’W has brought up previously, there isn’t enough connectivity within the FBS. All the other major sports have enough games against the other teams in the league/conference to determine which teams are better. With 120 FBS teams, and a number which play FCS teams, there is no way to connect most of the teams properly. How easy is it to compare Texas to TCU?
Right now, the issue isn’t the end result of playoffs vs. bowl games. The issue is the setup of the FBS and it’s inability to properly determine which teams are “best”.

If you are saying every, and ONLY, conference champions, then I am listening intently. But then again, you could still have a national championship that is a rematch of a non conference game and the team who lost ends up winning that time. I don’t think a playoff is some perfect solution. It’s what pro sports have told us is the right way because the more we believe there are “higher stakes” games, the more money they will make off consumers by including more (even if undeserving) teams.

Let’s say Arizona and Iowa play each other in this year’s playoff. Sure, Iowa beat Zona. But Arizona may be a better team now. It makes more sense to me. It’s not perfect, but it’s better, in my view.
What I would love to see is a playoff consisting of all of JUST the conference champions. So that’s what, 12? Anyway, that would certainly make the regular season relevant.

Would you tolerate some years of maybe the best team not getting a chance for some years of the not best team being crowned champion. It is my belief that sometimes excluding the maybe best team is worth it to never give an undeserving team a chance. That is a preference.
If Iowa played Arizona, and Arizona won for the national championship, I would consider that to be an extreme injustice. If anything, it shows that there was unfinished business.
I like the only conference champions idea, but I could not tolerate a system with a “wild card” type team, i.e. a non-conference champion. Also, once we have a “playoff” I am not confident we can keep it from expanding like pro sports, where we include tons of undeserving teams.
If the season ended today, and 16 teams played and LSU won the national championship, would you be satisfied that we had crowned a “true” national champion?

Let’s say Texas loses to Nebraska (and Alabama beats Florida). Unlikely, but do you really trust Texas now? I digress.
Hypothetical BCS:
MNC: Alabama (SEC) vs. Cinci (Big East) – I’m assuming Cinci would top TCU after their game with Pitt. I have no idea if that’s correct.
Rose: Ohio State (Big 10) vs. Oregon/Oregon State (PAC 10)
Orange: Georgia Tech (ACC) vs. Texas (Big 12) – The Orange Bowl takes Texas because they have a large fanbase, their conference has history here, and it’s a good matchup. Texas’s fast defense (helped them a lot tonight, didn’t it?) against the flexbone. Final score would probably reach the high 40s.
Fiesta: Nebraska (Big 12) vs. Iowa (Big 10) – Everyone assumes Iowa is better for the Fiesta, so why not, I guess. Iowa has some history with Nebraska too. They really should play every year.
Sugar: Florida (SEC) vs. TCU (Mid major) – 2009 Sugar Bowl all over again?
Not too bad, actually. I don’t expect us to make the BCS, so I wouldn’t mind this. As long as Cinci won, of course.

but I’m assuming in this scenario, the Sugar Bowl picks first due to their tie-in being in the MNC game. So Florida would likely go to the Sugar Bowl as the first “pick” in this BCS game draft. I think because the Big East is a floater, the other bowls then fall into order. Whatever that is – I’ve seen it posted around here somewhere…
