STILL MORE FOOTBAW?!?!

Apparently the mods are still fat and happy from Turkey-day, so I'll gladly set-up another open thread for football today. I'm sure they're all glad that we can find ways to entertain ourselves. It's one of the last weekends in college football, which means there are a lot of rivalry games. Which means even if the teams aren't that good, there's always the chance for a brawl. And let's be honest - we'd all get a little excited to see a scene from Bloodsport re-enacted on the field.

Bloodsport2_medium

The Holy War reaches new levels of HATE!!

Star-divide

Interesting early games on tap:

North Carolina @ N.C. State - 12pm
Clemson @ South Carolina - 12pm
Ole Miss @ Mississippi State - 12:20pm
Okie State @ Oklahoma - 12:30pm
V-Tech @ Virginia - 3:30pm
SWAG U @ South Florida - 3:30pm
"THE CLASH!!!" Florida St. @ Florida - 3:30pm

If other games start becoming interesting, feel free to let us all know. Also, Icers play their first game in this mini NCAA DIII tournament today at 4:30 (vs. Southern New Hampshire). Depending on how things go, I might make a new open thread around that time anyway. And then you'll have to deal with my Icers updates (I'm assuming they're broadcasting the game). Anywho - enjoy more FOOTBAW!

The announcer for the OU/OSU game

just said the defender made “a nice hit in space” and “sure tackling”. But the receiver he “tackled” broke through this great hit and gained a few more yards.

This is the best description of Nintendo XII defenses I’ve heard to date.

Which we probably won't get

but then again I’ve only heard scared Iowa message boarders talk about how there are a trillion alumni in the Arizona area. I don’t know what the Fiesta will be looking at.

by OMEGAMAN on Nov 28, 2009 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I don’t know that it’s so clear cut as to say we “probably” won’t get it. When was the last time we were in the Fiesta? Will the bowl believe all our fanbase has favorable memories and wants to go back? Will all the local alumni hurt the consideration because they take care of host cities and want traveling alumni to book hotels and fill restaurants?

Hey, Iowans want to say they have an edge because of the alumni, ok. But do you think we couldn’t sell out the game on our own? Because the only way Iowa is the clear choice over us is if you don’t think we can buy all the tickets, and you think they can. Otherwise, it’s a pretty big tossup I think.

by PSUinBOSSton on Nov 28, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

I agree.

This is just the scuttlebutt I’ve been hearing from their fanbase. We’ll be there in just as big of numbers. But I have heard no mention of Fiesta officials at our games and they were on hand to witness Iowa’s spectacular 12-0 game.

yeah

re: all the gravity/world is round comments, the notion that the playoff is objectively or scientifically better because it’s a widely held belief is cracking me up. We’re talking about deciding the CFB national champion. You could say the most accurate method is eliminating all postseason and regular season play and have a 128 team round robin, or have just a 12 game regular season and then pick the champion, none would be objectively wrong.

Boy, people get crazy about this topic.

by PSUinBOSSton on Nov 28, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Eh

I guess it’s still feasible to think the Fiesta Bowl would stay loyal to the Big XII if Okie State was available. It’s more likely the choice would come down between Iowa, Penn State, and mystery outside teams (TCU, Boise St, other teams now jumping into the top 14).

"In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

by IcersGuy on Nov 28, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

OK

I don’t know, the consensus seems to be that both non-qualifiers are going to make BCS games, which I’m just not convinced of, and if they do, you’re going to have to balance them with a really big name if you’re Orange or Fiesta.

Okie St. vs. Iowa is probably what Fiesta wants right now, but if Okie St. is gone, and their forced to pick a non-qualifier, wouldn’t you want the team playing them to be as potent $$$$ wise as possible?

Haha this is true

It just seems the most appealing to me if I’m them at this moment, but if you’re stuck with Boise, you’ve gotta balance that out somehow right? And if you’re balancing out a non-qualifier, I think Penn State is a safer bet than Iowa.

God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...

I'm just posting all of this

so that I’ll have a point of reference later when I forget again. Lets assume that Floribama Winner and Texas are in the MNC as the #1 and #2 teams in that order. So the picking for the bowls goes as follows

Sugar Bowl – replacing #1 team lost to MNC
Fiesta Bowl – replacing #2 team lost to MNC
Orange Bowl – First “at-large” pick
Fiesta Bowl – Second “at-large” pick
Sugar Bowl – Third “at-large” pick

I’m ignoring the Rose Bowl since that will be locked in (OSU vs. Pac-10). Let’s make G-Tech and Cincy their respective conference winners, and thus auto-bids. G-Tech is therefore locked into the Orange Bowl. TCU wins and they’re are guaranteed a BCS bowl bid with Cincy.

Sugar Bowl picks first and will likely pick the Floribama loser – they’ll get at least one good team, since they have the final pick. Fiesta would get the next pick. Again, if Okie State is there, would they go with the Big XII? Or would they go with a team that can get the money in Iowa/Penn State? They have to pick one, and they likely won’t get the other. Why- because the Orange Bowl would pick it up. So in reality, there’s no way the Fiesta would get an Okie State-Iowa match-up. The Fiesta is then picking from the group of TCU/Boise State/Cincy to fill the other spot. And, obviously, the leftovers fall to the Sugar Bowl.

If we’re assuming that both TCU and Boise are getting a bid, then it’s likely to come down to Big Ten reps vs. Okie State. With Okie State out, it increases the chances of Penn State getting picked statistically, but as was just mentioned, who knows what the Fiesta wants.

"In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

by IcersGuy on Nov 28, 2009 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

I Don't Know...

Would Orange take Okie St. if they came back? I feel like they wouldn’t. I can’t remember the last time Orange took a Big XII team that wasn’t playing for the MNC. Maybe they just haven’t had the chance, I don’t know…but I feel like, if Okie St. were to come back, Fiesta would pick Iowa first, Orange would take TCU, and Fiesta would take Okie St.

But it’s looking like that’s not going to happen…

Meaning the above scenario of Big 10 rep vs. Big East winner/Boise is probably what we’re looking at, which again begs the question of who we’d want to win the Big East…

God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...

You really think the Orange

would take the risk on a team that rarely sells out it’s own stadium over a BCS conference team?

by IcersGuy on Nov 28, 2009 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

They're not going to have a choice

At this point, Fiesta is getting the 2nd Big 10 team, and I think that’s pretty much a lock with Okie gone.

Orange is picking from Big East champ/TCU, and Fiesta takes Boise, or whoever Orange doesn’t.

by Adam Bittner on Nov 28, 2009 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

I think we can all but rule Ok St. out at this point

They’re #12 and losing to a 6-5 team is going to put them out of the top 14 with no games left to play. I’m finding it difficult to project who will take their spot in the rankings, maybe Virginia Tech.

by gumbercules on Nov 28, 2009 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

I’m just throwing this out there, but it looks like assuming no more losses and an Oregon win in the Civil War, USC may end up eligible for an at-large spot.

I was actually just working on a comment about that

It would be interesting to see if they’d be able to slide into the top 14, and if so, would a bowl game still pick them over a Big Ten team.

PSU/Iowa, TCU, Boise, and Cincy are sharing 4 at-large spots, I would think. I don’t think anyone is a threat from behind.

If I’m the BCS Bowls, this would be my lineup

MNC: Texas vs. Flabama
Rose: OSU vs. Oregon
Orange: Georgia Tech vs. TCU
Fiesta: Pitt vs. PSU/Iowa
Sugar: Flabama vs. Cincinatti

Root hard against Georgia Tech tonight, because if they win this week and lose next week, they’ll throw a wrench into all of this

You think there's any chance Pitt wins next week?

I’m calling Cincy in a laugher, but I’m biased and they have done it before against a team with a great offense and a suspect defense. But it’s going to take an incredible effort and their offense does not score well from behind, and Zach Collaros is no Jarrett Brown if Pike goes down. Maybe this “Chip Kelly to ND is a done deal” rumor will affect Cincy’s team.

by gumbercules on Nov 28, 2009 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

I mean

As we saw yesterday, Pitt’s come-from-behind offense when they can’t grind clock with Lewis is essentially “Throw it deep to Baldwin”. If they spot Cincinatti an early 2 TD lead, it could get ugly.

I guess I just see things as more of a package than you do. The Fiesta Bowl is getting screwed with their 2nd choice either way, and if I’m them, I’m not just looking at Penn State and Iowa independently, but also which can help me get the most out of the crap teams I’m playing. If I’m ranking their potential matchups:

  1. Pitt vs. Penn State
    T-#2 Iowa/PSU vs. Boise
    T-#4 PSU/Iowa vs. Cincinatti

I’m referring to the overall angst on that board. I’ve been following it most of the season and the majority of them feel trapped. Best way to find it is to go to wikipedia and look up Pitt and their national championships and it explains how many times they have been co-champions nationally and how many they actually claim, etc.

PSUinBOSSton
think the regional appeal sacrifices any national interest. People in PA are going to watch either of these teams, you don’t bring in any other geographic area. Also, I think the cap one bowl gives us more reward. Beating lsu or ole miss is more valuable than pitt. If it comes down to that, I hope Iowa gets the bid.

What “geographic region” is Boise pulling in? Idaho? Montana? MAYBE Washington State and Oregon (pushing it)?

And what about Cincinatti? What exactly are they bringing to the table? We already know they can’t draw a crowd after what happened last year, there’s no reason to think this year will be any different.

Of the three prospective opponents in the Fiesta Bowl, Pitt is far and away the most marketable, ESPECIALLY if they’re playing Penn State. The people that’d watch PSU-PItt would probably eclipse the Iowa/Cincy, Iowa/Boise, or Iowa/Pitt matchups combined.

You’re argument makes sense, but doesn’t hold water in this specific scenario. Pitt is the team in the biggest market available with the biggest following, a following that will be energized to play it’s biggest rival for the first time in close to 10 years.

And the Cap One payout isn’t remotely close to the BCS payout, so let’s not kid ourselves here. Maybe you’d enjoy beating an SEC team more, but $$$$ and recruiting wise, Cap One doesn’t offer nearly the opportunities Fiesta does.

First, I think you are way overestimating the Pitt following.

Second, the cap one payout is zero value over the bcs payout, so long as both are b10 teams. We share both payouts equally.

Cap one is more advantageous than BCS against Pitt because the opponent garners more national respect, and more national viewers than Pitt ever could.

Look, you like Pitt. That’s fine. We don’t agree on this. That’s ok too. I do not believe that Pitt being available makes it any more likely that we make a BCS game. We are appealing for our own independent reasons. But it doesn’t matter to me even if I’m wrong because it would automatically put us in a game that I believe to be less marketable and have less reward than the cap one.

Iowa

via Rittenberg

With Oklahoma State essentially eliminated, the Big Ten is in excellent shape to send two teams to BCS bowls for the fifth consecutive year. Either Iowa or Penn State will be the lucky recipient, and the Hawkeyes seem positioned very well for the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Penn State needs something that’s going to turn that around, and Pitt’s our last best chance.

To be fair

There is something different between traveling to Pittsburgh for a regular season game, and traveling to Arizona for a BCS bowl with a national spotlight. Iowa will sell out that place.

The toss-up will be between will Pitt fans travel any better because of a match-up with Penn State, and what is the difference in TV market share for the two possible match-ups?

Again, this is all under the prediction that Pitt beats Cincy next week.

Their offense is BCS material, but their defense is laughably bad. But Weis doesn’t coach defense and is a proven great recruiter. They’re only in their second year with Tenuta as the head of the defense. Why not give it one more?

Are on Fox Radio everyday, one of them is Hartman, from Meyers and Hartman. I can’t stand him, his voice is annoying and he’s an enormous USC homer.

The Big Ten’s moving their games up a week starting next year. This is awesome because it’s pissed off UM and OSU fans because THE GAME is ALWAYS (except…it’s not) played before Thanksgiving.

Is there any explanation

how the Illini scheduled 2 OOC games after the rest of the conference was done with their season? I figure Wiscy’s trip to Hawaii was a scheduling issue to get the Rainbows Warriors on the schedule, but the Illini played Cincy this past week, and have a game against Fresno State this coming Saturday.
