JOE PA WINS!!!
Attention all PSU fans: Bowden to retire at FSU, per this article.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4701625
JOE PA! JOE PA! JOE PA! JOE PA! JOE PA!! JOE PA! JOE PA! JOE PA! JOE PA!
Weis & Bowden on the same day? I gotta say... today was a good day. Although, I thought both schools were going to be incredibly average for as long as they retained Weis & Bowden, so maybe I should be careful what I wish for.
Anyway, JOE PA JOE PA JOE PA!

When it rains, it pours.
DickRod better be careful, as these things have a tendency to occur in threes.
Hey can we get a link to the SBN blog instead of ESPN
since we had it today at 2:52? http://www.tomahawknation.com/2009/11/30/1179832/bobby-bowden-to-retire-tuesday
And congrats, Joe Pa will have the record.
Joe Pa will have the record
Continue having? Increase the lead? Remain the winningest Div1A coach ever, even after you take away his Samford wins?

Bobby bowden is the barry bonds of college coaches
he will always have an asterisk next to his name for his FBS, FORMERLY KNOWN AS DIV IAA WINS**************************************joke
im new around these parts...
why does everyone
get this wrong? There was no such thing as Div IAA or FCS when he was at Sanford. Are you going to take away wins from Pop Warner because he played teams such as Sewickley A.C. (athletic club), Latrobe High School, etc. No, you play who is legal at the time. At least when at Sanford the teams he played were on the same level unlike E ILL, Indiana St and the shit teams that currently count for all of these coaches.

as a side note
I have $20 that says Bowden is coaching a FBS team in 2011.
JoePa in '09
yep.

Tennesee Tech Freshman, Memphis NAS, and University of Mexico (and others)
were on the same level? Just checking.

no different
then Joe’s wins over YSU, E Ill, soon to be Indiana St and YSU again, and while doing so, he wasn’t at some CFB powerhouse.
JoePa in '09
who cares
take those wins away for joe….he still beats him in the end…flood pants > safari hat
im new around these parts...
FYI since you asked.
Div 1 was split into I-A and I-AA in 1978.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_I
Just for the record, I am not arguing that those are legit wins for BB, I am just saying that I think we (as PSU fans) sound self-serving when we bust on BB for those wins when they were considered same level at the time and our coach has wins from games that happened while he layed in bed.
JoePa in '09
i dont think we sound self serving at all
thing is PSU = div 1a…..samford/howard/whatever = div 1aa and at one point d2. Never once has samford even been considered div 1a from the start, being “legal” or not. Whats legal? filing with the clearinghouse?
im new around these parts...
But the point is that there was no “Div 1A” or “Div 1AA” at the time (heck, I don’t think there was even any “Div 1” versus “Div 2” then). At the time, Samford/Howard was just as “major” as Penn State was because there was no distinction.
As a way of comparison, Yale and Princeton were clearly among the powerhouses of college football at the start of the 20th century and for much of the first half of the century. Yet they are 1-AA now — but it would be silly to suggest that performances that occurred at those schools around 1900 weren’t “major college” or the equivalent of 1-A now.
I don’t think there is any other reasonable way to count Bowden’s Howard College time as anything but part of his 1-A/major college total wins. This isn’t even the same boat as (say) Tressel who coached at Youngstown St well after the 1-A/1-AA split. At the time Bowden was there, Howard College was the same classification as Penn State — because there was no official classification difference.
fine, you win
still alot of questions and non distinction type stuff. I guess error on the side of counting them. Good for BB for getting those to count, i know he had to fight for them (took it to court i believe) Kicking n screaming for 31 wins, probably something that Joe wouldnt do.
im new around these parts...
Actually, they are different
Bowden had an actual team at Samford. And while I also don’t think we should count our wins against FCS, YSU and Eastern Illinois fielded actual football teams. Tennessee Tech Freshmen? Memphis Naval Air Station? I don’t even know what the hell University of Mexico is. These are all club teams at best.

I think the point we are all missing
Is that even with those wins included, Joe has the record. So I say keep ‘em. Keep the wins from the academic scandal, it doesn’t matter. Unless of course people’s premonitions come true and BB keeps rolling around in 1AA for awhile.

I think at this point
even if you give Bowden all his claimed wins, and take away all of JoePa’s 1-AA wins, JoePa still has the record.

Glad it ended this way
instead of someone killing over.
God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...
It's not over yet...
First, Bowden hasn’t officially retired. I won’t believe it until I see it come from his mouth (or at least be in the form of an official press release).
Second, retiring from FSU doesn’t mean he won’t end up as a figurehead coach somewhere just to rack up some wins to try to get the record.
I’ll feel better about JoePa getting the record if Bowden leaves FSU and gets docked the wins from the NCAA (as he should). Then the lead — especially with Paterno having 2 or more years to go — will be insurmountable.
New job at 80?
And the reports are saying “retiring”, not resigning. I’d be amazed if he started a new job, but who knows if his ego will let him quit…

I seem to recall quite a few reports over the years about a certain Brett Favre "retiring" as well

Maybe he'll take the UVA job and stick it to FSU

You don’t think that some school with a middling program might not give him a shot just to get some PR and exposure? Some have suggested Alabama-Birmingham, for example (he’s from Alabama). Or what about the likes of Florida International? I’m not saying it would happen, but it’s not like such schools have anything to lose really.

is 75 and Stagg coached till he was like 91 or 93 or something.

BOBBY AIN'T GOING OUT LIKE THAT
Just published in the past hour or so – per the Associated Press, Bobby Bowden and his wife are refuting today’s reports (that came from school officials!). This one’s gonna get ugly.
lol
“Yes, there are options,” said a relaxed Bowden, who was eating a light dinner while seated in an easy chair in his home office surrounded by memorabilia from his long career. “One of them is to be the head coach.”
Um…so if that is one of the options, and that’s what you claim you want to do, then that seems a no brainer, right? Or perhaps that isn’t one of the options…
by The JuggerNitt on Dec 1, 2009 1:01 AM EST up reply actions
That reads like a novel... CONTINUE THE STORY!
Bowden arose suddenly from his chair and moved towards his memorabilia at a surprisingly jaunty pace for a man his age. “Ah yes, the good old days at South Georgia College” he reminisced, indicating a dusty old black and white photograph of himself, with a much more youthful appearance, hugging the South Georgia College’s Tiger mascot after a riveting 1-0 victory over then baseball powerhouse USC Salkahatchie. “I coached football, basketball, and baseball there. Why I just don’t see why I can’t count those victories too Dadgummit”.

You neglected to begin with:
“It was a dark and stormy night…”
One man doing the work of 100's for the good of 1000's
My all-time favorite opening line is:
“The sea was angry that day, my friends”
Either one would work in this story.
"God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy"
Watch NONE of the other actors keep a straight face that entire speech.

This reeks of
FSU saying “Hey Bobby, you can either announce that you are retiring or we will announce that you are fired. Your move.”
Maybe there is a quasi game of chicken going on also(a la Favre and the Packers), who knows?
I almost don’t care either way, I am just glad I have things to keep me entertained until we play a bowl game.
Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Name. All Game.
"Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth."
Didn't his wife
just get quoted saying (and I paraphrase) “FSU is batshit crazy if they think Bobby is leaving – he built this program, and he can do whatever he wants.”
Should be interesting to watch this one from the sidelines.
...and speaking from the sidelines...
as far as we know, SuePa has not made any cookies for her and Dangits, so lets not jump to conclusions…can’t wait till the cluster-bomb of a presser where each side denies they ever agreed to anything…for those of you old enough or into history, thishas all of the comparisons to the VietNam Peace talks.
you're doing it wrong

This has all of the comparisons to the Grand Council between the Iroquois and Delaware in 1742

Eh, that'll do
But the Grand Council above is more obscure.
