Best Matchup
Good God is it going to be fun watching the Penn State offense and Ohio State defense go toe to toe. Both units are pretty evenly matched. I think we'll see both teams win their share of battles.
Both teams commit very few penalties. So it should be a pretty clean game, unless the Big Ten officials decide to finally start calling holding for a change. Or if they flag Sean Lee with yet another unnecessary roughness penalty, cuz, ya know, he's the most dirty player in the league for hitting tight ends in the chest with his shoulder pad.
Worst Matchup
Nothing really. I guess neither team is spectacular in the punting game.
Advantages for Ohio State
As usual, Penn State gives up a lot in the kicking game. Expect Penn State to be starting with poor field position most of the night, and don't be surprised if Ohio State gets a good return or two. But keep in mind that Ohio State's kicker is out for the year. So maybe there's hope there.
Advantages for Penn State
All those
's really stick out when Penn State is on defense, don't they? The Buckeyes have a pretty good rushing game, but I suspect a lot of those yards are Terrelle Pryor. If Penn State can contain him or get a lead where Jim Tressel has to abandon the running game, it could spell doom for the Buckeye offense.
I'm really surprised with Ohio State's ability to score in the redzone. You would think with a weapon like Pryor they would score every time down there. Or turn it over. Everybody does. Whatever. Penn State, on the other hand, leads the nation in turning teams away when they start knocking on the goal line. So if Ohio State stalls in the redzone once or twice, you can smile with knowing glee.

Defense
I wouldn’t be shocked if our defense held aO$U to single digits on the scoreboard. Partly because our defense is so much better than their offense, partly because a couple drives that would normally end with a field goal will likely either turn into a missed FG or a turnover on downs, thanks to their starting kicker being out for the rest of the regular season. Their backup kicker was only 1-for-3 last week with no pressure on him at home against NMSU. I read that their third-string kicker is getting a look too, which isn’t a good sign for them. Things could turn ugly for the Buckeyes in the kicking game.

Buckeye scoring offense
I wonder if that number counts total points, or actual scoring “offense”. It seems like they’ve been getting a lot of defensive/special teams TDs this year, and that their offense couldn’t possibly be putting up more points per game than Penn State. No?

Total Points
This includes defensive TDs. OSU’s scoring proficiency is a testament to the quality of their special teams and defense. Not just TD returns, but also working from short fields.

Couldn't agree more
Not to sound cliche, but I really think this one will be decided by QB turnovers or a ridiculous special teams play. The worst thing Penn State could have happen is Pryor not turn the ball over or not do it at a critical spot coupled with a frustration mode Clark.
by cpm126 on Nov 4, 2009 12:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
we didn't see frustration mode Clark last week
So that is a good thing.

Last Year
Pregame, I predicted that the team which scored a TD would win the game (duh right?), but you knew there wouldn’t be many. The red zone numbers speak pretty loudly as listed above. We have to hold them to nothing but field goals (although w/ their kicking issues will probably go for it more often), while we need convert a chance or two down there and put 6’s on the board rather than 3’s. If we get a couple of 6’s, win the turnover battle, this could even slip into a 20-3, 24-6 type of game…which is an absolute beat down in this game. Of course, that means winning the turnover battle. Knock on wood.

Wiscy vs. O$U
Wiscy moved the ball all day against O$U defense, and I believe our offense to be much more dynamic and Clark much more capable than Tolzein. Wiscy just couldn’t close the deal in the redzone. If we can get TDs instead of FGs (and pooch punts), I think we’ll win going away.
by PaOhWi on Nov 4, 2009 9:11 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
BUT, we have to be willing to run with DC like we did at Illi.
Tolzien had a few big runs against OSU, if I’m not mistaken.

WI also
gave up something llike 14 or 21 of their points on turnovers. I know there was at least 2 pick 6’s. If I’m not mistaken, I think their offense only scored 10 of their total points.
Bottom line is that WI and Purdue showed that you can run and score on this defense.

Accuracy
Mike, I think something is up with SBNation’s statistics, double-check the team stat numbers here. When I saw Pryor with an 83 passer rating I thought “Hilarious, but impossible”, and sure enough click on his player link shows the number 129.1. Likewise, Bauserman has an 86.4 rating. Also both QBs have positive passing yardage on the season, but even clicking through to the player links gives 0 yds.

Interesting
I’m really excited to see our defense against their offense. I think we’ll struggle a littl early to contain them, because our defense seems to need a quarter to begin reading offense they’re facing. But I expect a lot of 8 in the box, with Bowman spying Pryor, and the opportunity for our corners to pick off a couple of those wounded duck wobblers Pryor will be putting up.

Pyror's passing
There’s plenty of fun made of fun made of Pyror for his passing but don’t forget his numbers last year: 16/25, 226.
They did a really good job of moving the ball through the air against our D. While our secondary might be better than it was last year, our pass rush is not as good.
My biggest concern is that he does enough through the air to keep our D off balance and that allows them to run. My second biggest concern is turnovers by our offense.
If this were another team I would feel really good about PSU’s chances. As it is, I’m nervous.

Pryor did well last year because he had Robiskie
He was bailed out constantly by Robiskie’s ability to go up for jump balls. There were four or five instances where I swore at the TV when Robiskie did this for 30+ yards.
Also, we didn’t get much pressure on Pryor last year because they were holding every play but mainly because we were doing the “mush rush”

Matchups
I’m concerned, still, about our O-line against their D.
I hope the game plan includes quick outs to Moye and quick slants to Quarless.
On the other hand, our DFC’ers have had a lot of practice,
so I’m not worried about our pass defense.
by confirmy on Nov 4, 2009 10:46 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
That matchup is certainly in their favor
but all we need IMO from the offense is 13 points and no turnovers. What we don’t need from the offense is Clark starting to press and throw three interceptions.
Just because I think this game will be 13-10, this game will probably end up one of those late 90’s Pac-10 games (55-42 ish). All my preseason thoughts this year have been so far off. I thought we would smoke Iowa at home, but lose to a much improved Illinois team on the road the following week. At least David Jones’ Northwestern to win the Big 10 prediction also seems pretty silly right now.

Worse then the first Iowa OT loss.
I remember screaming at the defense to just let them score so we would have more time on the clock. They were on the goal-line for what seemed like an eternity. Mills moved us down the field with literally no time left and then the field goal was like a yard short.
We were near that endzone that we kicked it to, and lord it was so friggin close.

12-12. And let’s not forget how it all started in 1912 with OSU forfeiting a home game because PSU was knocking them silly. You can cite whatever time period you want, a decade, 100 years, 4 years. What matters is recent history.

You actually think your offense can put 20 on our defense? Iowa only score 12 (remove that block punt and safety), Illnois scored 10 (scrubeenie time TD excluded). Show me one game where a team scored more than 14. We’ve faced more potent offenses than that on in Columbus. We destroyed Michigan and they had statistically the best offense in the Big Ten (Currently ranked 16 in the nation 2nd behind PSU in the big ten, where as O$U is 5th in the Big Ten 39th in the nation)….. Zip it.

Hey hey hey CMDPSU15
We can only cite states that barely favor the buckeyes here…
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

Sorry, I should spell it out for you.
We say “doucheabag” around here.
If you want to be proud of O$U’s wins vs PSU in ‘03 and ’04, against two of the worst teams in PSU history, go for it. It’s just as cheap as saying O$U was “co-champions” in ’05 and ’08. 17-10 and 13-6, doucheabag.
"Is that right?" Joe answered. "That’s not a problem. But you’ve got a problem. You don’t relate to me. And that’s a big problem."

Dear B-O Nation,
It appears time for a vocabulary lesson, which will indicate why I brought your comment up.
Several points to address:
SPINNING
A spin implies twisting the data to fit your point.
I “spun” it 2-2, discussing the last 4 games – games IN WHICH CURRENT PLAYERS WERE ELIGIBLE (regardless of whether they DID, it is still a better indicator than an arbitrary one).
YOU, on the other hand, made an arbitrary cut-off at 2002 (make it slightly more arbitrary at 2001 and things don’t look as pretty for you…).
“Spinning” aside, my data has more bearing on this game than does yours.
“Practically” and Smoking teams.
Now, the reason I extended to the 12-12: You stated that we get smoked practically every time we play. Two points to be made there, and I’ll do it slow (like you do – you claim it is for our benefit, but nobody on BSD is a f*&^ing moron…):
PRACTICALLY
50/50 is an even record hands down… most of the time. I understand that Buckeyes don’t understand how to use adverbs (see TP “barely” fumbling the ball last year), but PRACTICALLY means, by definition, :almost" or “nearly.” OSU does NOT beat Penn State “almost” every time, as evidenced by the fact that they have only beaten PSU half the time.
SMOKING
The most special part of your point: “smoking.” Smoking a team is what PSU did to Oregon State last year (45-14). In other words, BLOWOUTS.
A quick history lesson:
2002 – OSU win 13-7.
2003 – OSU win 21-20 (btw, you were #7 and we only won 3 games.)
2004 – OSU win 21-10.
2005 – PSU win 17-10.
2006 – OSU win 28-6 (a little lobsided, but our QB threw more TDs than yours did).
2007 – OSU win 37-17.
2008 – PSU win 13-6.
I believe it was in ‘03 that you only got the win because of the Immaculate Grass Reception, but we’ll give that one to you.
So, that means, in your 5 victories, including 2 of Penn State’s worst years ever, you won by a combined 60 points, again, over all 5 games. That averages out to 12 pts. Not bad, but certainly not a smoking.
A smoking, my friend, is when you hang a 63-14 SHITSTOMPING on a team that finishes 9/14 in the polls.
Sincerely,
psume06

Didn’t I ban you once already? If there was any doubt as to your troll status, creating a second account to come back in and flame put that to bed.

Why would he be scared of you?
He’s a grown man with a successful blog. You’re (evidently) a two-year old who has to resort to pimping your crappy blog by posting awful “articles” on Bleacher Report.

I've been reading some of your writing both here
and on your blog, and I’m curious, do you have a degree from OSU? And if so, what are the English requirements for a degree from that institution?

Oh come on now
It’s profanity and personal insults like that that got you banned in the first place, remember? You can say whatever you want as long as you keep it clean. Only Buckeyes and sPitt fans seem to have a hard time understanding this for some reason. We had a good back and forth with the Michigan guys a few weeks ago without me having to ban a soul. Iowa repeatedly beats our ass and comes in here to tell us about it, but I don’t have to ban those guys. So I’ll let my moderator skillz speak for themselves.
I kind of like keeping you around for a while. You’re doing a better job of getting everyone fired up than I could. But my patience is wearing thin with your borish behavior.

Seriously…. grow the F*ck up. All you are is a stupid little internet troll. If you have something that isn’t a complete homer comment, great add it to our blog. If not shut the f*ck up and go back to your 5th grader blog.
Your posts are completely and utterly useless. I’ve seen your little blog and its a POS. We actually have the guts to call it how it is over here at BSD, you just think everything is perfect in your little world. I don’t think I’ve seen anything that represents more of a homer perpective than your little blog.

But when you’re here, you better not act like a tool. Save that for your website.

AHAHAHAH WHO WROTE THIS:
Ohio State is an over glorified community college. Yeah, you have 7 national titles, but you guys sold your soul by worshipping that sociopath Woody Hayes. Those dead tumbleweeds blowing between your collective ears wants to fire TresselBall now and soon that rivalry with Michigan is gonna die.
But you and Michigan can keep the rivalry. I’ll even pay for your room.

“Joe B. starts against Iowa, Tressel will have no choice”
He will have a choice and he will choose Pryor…b/c he and the trustee’s are afraid that the crybaby will go to the media if he gets benched…BECAUSE YOU PAID HIM TO GO THERE…Terrell has you by the balls for the next 2 years and you can’t do anything but try to glorify the Big Ten Preseason MVP….hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Now excuse me while I go and change the water in BlockO-CEO’s mama’s dish
This was perfect not only because it called them out for buying Pryor that Corvette, but it laughed at Preseason MVP.
But most importantly, it set off a shit-ton of angry posts about yo mama jokes.
