The Wind Blew Me Back Via Chicago
[I was going to post this on the front page earlier in the week, but it's already getting late on Wednesday so we're saving front page stuff for Ohio State. Here's a picture recap of our trip to Chicago.]
Not that we had a lot of extra time to roam around, but Chicago is rather excellent. Great vibe to the city, beautiful scenery, nice people. Cheap public transportation. Really, all of the things that are good about big cities. We drove up to Evanston and tailgated with the PSU-Chicago group, which ran an All You Can Eat/Drink deal.
Eventually, we took the shuttle over to Ryan Field, which was probably 40% Penn State fans. Although nobody had seats quite as good as these two guys:
The stadium is old. Really old. At least it looks really old. The upper deck you see in the picture above couldn't have been more than 5% occupied. The endzone bleachers never got more crowded than what you see in the picture.
Ryan Field wasn't without its charm, though. Concessions were cheap, lines were short, and getting around the place was easy. Northwestern has the names of their All-Americans across the façade of the upper deck, along with their bowl appearances (and yes, they actually posted their 2003 Motor City Bowl appearance up there).
So, yes, lots of Penn State images:
And yay we won.
The next day, we did a little walking around Millenium Park and the Wicker Park neighborhood. And seriously, giant shiny jellybean:
This is "Cloud Gate":
The 110-ton elliptical sculpture is forged of a seamless series of highly polished stainless steel plates, which reflect the city's famous skyline and the clouds above. A 12-foot-high arch provides a "gate" to the concave chamber beneath the sculpture, inviting visitors to touch its mirror-like surface and see their image reflected back from a variety of perspectives.
And yeah, it's kind of massive and cool. Half the fun was watching other people be amazed by it.
Would love to check out Madison someday, but it's hard to beat Chicago for a weekend road trip.

You should.
Easy city to get around. Lots to see. Plenty of PSU people around.

I hate to jack your thread...
….but basically I was too lazy to create my own post…and I’m kinda slow with the picture uploading interweb stuff
I was at the same tailgate…sorry we didn’t meet up. I woke up in a bit of a fog Saturday and left my phone in my buddies car.

Yeah, I had thought of that.
I would’ve met up with any BSD’ers there, but our group’s plans were kind of scrambled in terms of when we’d get to the tailgate, how we were getting there, etc.

I don't feel as bad now.
I ’ll be at Sparty if anyone else is around.

We'll need a BSD tailgate *early* next season
Before the weather turns to total crap, which should happen sometime in mid-September.
Seriously, we’re owed 7 home games of warmth and sunshine next year.

we got lucky in Chicago as far as I'm concerned...
….I’ve been to Sparty everytime since I graduated from PSU (’01, ’03, ’05 and ’07) and East Lansing can be a nasty bitch in late November. (best friends dad went to Sparty and lives up there so I go visit every odd year)
Prepared for the worst hoped for the best (and got it) at jNW.
Preparing for the worst and expecting…whatever is more miserable than worst in East Lansing.

Wow, it’s like you just described Columbus in great detail.

I do like Chicago
and Evanston, although I’ve never been to a game there. I also really really like Madison. Never been to game there either, but its much more like State College, total college town vibe to it. (Despite it being the state capital and kinda being built around a beautiful capital building) They love their beer in Madison.
I’ve been a LOOOOOT of places, but have never been to another football game outside of SC. I’m hoping to change that in the near future, everyone tells me I must take in a game at College Station, and perhaps someday I’ll see one in Austin too.

+1000 for Wilco references
Chicago is a great town. Lollapalooza was a blast out there.

In RUTS's section too!
So my wife made it into one of your pictures! She’s excited. She’s wearing the white hooded fleece in the top right of the crowd shot. Looks like she’s standing on some dude’s raised hand.
I personally enjoyed the free (yes free) Goose Island beer in Wildcat Alley before the game.
Did anyone else notice all the NW fans leaving at halftime? When their team was winning their biggest home game of the year? Don’t understand it…
We made the trip down from Madison for the weekend. (You all should definitely come up for a road trip!) On Sunday morning, we went to check out from our downtown hotel and found out that the valet had been mugged Saturday night and our keys were stolen. Hotel hired a car to take us back to Madison (about 2.5 hours). I grabbed the spare key and rode back with the driver, picked up the car, and drove back home. Crazy Sunday!
