Sanderson Locks, Loads, and....Locks Again

Penn State wrestling's version of Midnight Madness kicks off tonight with Coach Cael Sanderson changing the usual wrestle-off format for starting spots into an intra-squad scrimmage. Preliminary eliminations have whittled the weight classes down to the top two (more or less), and the scrimmage winners will begin the season as starters. Except when they won't.

Confused? Then read on.

Star-divide

Sanderson has decided to redshirt (if possible, and injuries permit) his entire ass-kicking '09 recruiting class, even if some win in tonight's scrimmage. This isn't remarkable in itself; freshmen have a difficult time adjusting to both the physical and mental rigors of big time D-1 wrestling (Coach Cael being one obvious exception). Wrestling doesn't lend itself to Frosh Phenoms like other sports do, as wrestlers don't have the luxury of being specialists (e.g. nickel backs, kick returners, short yardage backs, etc.). They need to do it all themselves - offense, defense, 2-minute drill and running out the clock. It's very tough for an 18 year old to compete with a twenty-two or twenty-three year old with years of experience and mature man-strength in a one-on-one situation.

As much as we'd like to get a look at David Taylor (nation's #1 ranked recruit), Ed Ruth (#3) Jake Kemmerer (#9), and Luke Macchiaroli, it likely won't happen in a varsity setting this year.

Expect the same with next year's nasty group ('10 class), which already includes the Alton twins (Andrew #2, Dylan #5), Sam Sherlock (#17), and Dirk Cowburn (#47). Unconfirmed rumors indicate more gunslingers will be joining them; Sanderson is a HUGE draw for PSU.

Locking and loading is great, but...relocking? Sanderson plans on also redshirting '08 NCAA runner-up and senior Bubba Jenkins. Jenkins currently has academic issues, and isn't eligible until January anyway. Injuries kept him from repeating his NCAA showing last year, so another year in the practice room getting splattered by Cael should do wonders. He's National Champ material.

Relocking? Another unexpected redshirt is soph Quentin Wright, who had to step up last year as a true frosh because of lineup injuries.  Boy, did he deliver: 33-13, and 6th at Nationals. That is amazing, especially at 174 pounds where he battled juniors and seniors all year. Coming back next season with sophomore eligibility and a year under Cael will be tremendous for PSU.  More National Champ material.

These guys won't be stashed in a closet all year, though. All are allowed to wrestle in Open tourneys throughout the season, listed as 'Penn State - Unattached', and will gain invaluable experience. By season's end, our 'unofficial' team may be stronger than our varsity. Weird, but waaay cool for the upcoming years.

Sanderson also just received a committment from HS junior ('11) Nico Megaludis, currently the #2 ranked 112 pounder in the country. He was a Pa. State Champ last year as a soph, and a tough little dude. In other words - just our type. More commits for both '10 and '11 should begin rolling in after January

While this list of guys that WON'T be competing this year is impressive, it doesn't mean we'll be throwing out a team of stiffs this season. Far from it. The next update will focus on who IS wrestling, and we'll have a better handle on it after tonight.

I just wanted to give you a glimpse of what's in store for the next few years. Lots and lots of fun for us, but not so much for everyone else.

Cael Sanderson rocks.

Ah

Yet another reason why I love poking my head in on BSD every now and then. I can’t wait to see another formidable opponent for Iowa to wrestle against.

They took the bar, the whole fucking bar!

The BTN PSN will be an absolute godsend over the next few years, me thinks

It's almost not fair

This sounds like how I run my PS2 NCAA football dynasties.

Kinda like playing every Tiger Woods game

unless it’s plausible to win every tournament every year and lead every stat category. Well, now it is, in real life, in college wrestling. BAZINGA!

Yeah, I'm not sure I've ever not redshirted all my freshmen on NCAA.

Then again, every year I get like 17 five star committments, so its easy to lock, load, and lock again.

do you start your dynasties with PSU?

Because if so, I understand the 17 5 star commits.

But say you start with…. Idaho. Are there any tricks to swaying commits? I mean, I typically either win the national title game or win a BCS bowl as an undefeated WAC school on the outside looking in. I guess I just have to wait for the PAC-10 to take my Vandals in…. sigh.

Here's what I do

I create a team and try to give them unis that look as close to PSU as I can. I give them cupcake talent, and kick the real PSU out of the Big Ten so my team can take their schedule.

I’ll usually lose a game or two the first year, and can load up on three star kids. The next year I go undefeated and the world is my oyster in recruiting after that.

Man up and hike the difficulty up from JV level. Chump.

Luring recruits with my new "Posting HD" scheme since '08.

Thats an interesting point.

Every year I’m undefeated and try to play the top 4 other teams OOC. And every year Notre Dame or Oklahoma passes me for #1. I’ve played like 2 or 3 MNC’s as the undefeated #2 whereas I started #1. And yeah, I play as PSU. I’ve tried a season or two as Georgia Tech, but the game makes the running the option entirely too hard. And recruiting suffers heavily as a lesser school.

And I would suppose its important to be able to hard sell whatever Idaho is good at to the best recruits that are interested in you.

Interested recruits are a million times easier to land than not interested ones. And thats a draw on your recruiting time. Hopefully after a couple good seasons, your schools grades in a few things should improve.

well, by default

Idaho is very good for academic prestice, campus lifestyle, athletic facilities, and fanbase. I was shocked it was that many.

Everything else is pretty awful though.

The first, second, third and fourth things are incorrectly rated.

Other than that… Well-played, EA.

I know

I feel bad about cutting all those 85 rated juniors, but when you have a 86 rated sophomore taking off the redshirt, whatayagonnado?

Thats only if you make playing time promises.

Those are worthless. Stick with winning record over rivals and top ten first year/two years on campus. MNC, if you unlock it. That way you can cut indiscriminately with no penalties.

Oh sweet

That’s what I tend to do anyway. I promise them nothing that isn’t blatantly obviously bound to happen, like the aforementioned beating of rivals and top ten promises.

Guys, guys, guys.

If the last 2 days has taught us anything, its that OSU fans troll this blog…

We need to keep stuff simple for them, okay?

The Rad Russian thinks this isn't wrestling

In all seriousness, Cael seems to be amassing an unholy amount of talent for a school not really known for wrestling. Should be fun to see how it goes.

by TheK-GunNeedsReloaded on Nov 5, 2009 7:22 AM EST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

This is Cael's dream job.

He wanted direct access to Pa.’s HS wrestling talent, which is considered the best in the nation. Of all the guys mentioned in this post, only 2 are not from Pa.: Taylor (Ohio), and Macchiaroli (3 time Arizona state champ). Ed Ruth spent his senior year at powerhouse Blair Academy (N.J.), but was a Schuylkill Townshipian (?) until then.

Taylor and Kemmerer de-commited from elsewhere just to wrestle for Cael, and his bro Cyler (senior, ranked #5 nationally) coming aboard was a bonus.

PSU actually does have a very strong wrestling history, but in the last decade things stalled pretty badly. Too many home-grown studs got away and are succeeding in places they shouldn’t be attending.

That seems to have stopped, as all the guys Cael has targeted have come aboard.

And, a mea culpa: the scrimmage is actually tonight (Thusday). I didn’t mean to post it until this morning, but I’m such a schmuck that when attempting to preview it one last time, I hit the ‘post’ button.

Date and Post EPIC FAIL!

Nonsense

Townshipian is one hundred percent viable.

And wow. I did not know this:

All are allowed to wrestle in Open tourneys throughout the season, listed as ‘Penn State – Unattached’, and will gain invaluable experience.

Keep smacking yourself around as long as you keep bringing this flavor of goodness!
p.s., are you tailgating this weekend? I’m making only my second game, but it’s an RV weekend with the brothers, and I’m looking to roam.

"For me the game wasn’t grounded in reality. It was about the uniform you put on that turned you into a warrior. It was about the mythology of the battle, the victory, the defeat, the struggle." - Mike Reid, PSU '69

I'll be up for the weekend,

but probably not setting up a tailgate. I was hoping there might be a BSD meet n’ greet somewhere – like Mike’s, maybe. Outside Medlar field, I think.

Why not knock out a fanshot about this, J? This is my last game this year, as I’ve got a Formal Engagement thing next weekend. Be nice to meet some of the folks.

Whaddaya think?
