JoePA named GOP president candidate in 2012
After his ultra conservative play calling Saturday the GOP thinks JoePa is the dark horse to unseat Barack Obama and unite the conservative base. Joking aside, I am sickened by this game. This game can be put on a few people. One Tim Curley for this awful schedule. He is punshing kids who come here to be the best and play against the best. Beating up on weak opponents does not accompli$h this. Look at our basketball team, if we had played one or two tougher games last year we could have easily won a game down the stretch and be in the NCAA's. Second goes to JoePa. I love and respect this man, but I am so sick of the same ole same ole. For christ sake we have a former QB coach "coaching" our O-Line. This is a joke. He also has failed to make any changes on special teams. Joe needs to call his buddy Frank Beamer and learn that special teams make all the difference. Finally I am sick of Tom Bradley and this stupid cover 3 scheme. Earth to Tom Bradley the good teams know you always run this and know how to beat it. We have enough athletes on this team that we can play man. Give it a shot. I am sure you will all rip me for this post, but I think this season is a failure.

I agree completely.
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

My mission is accomplished
Please let me know the last time you think JoePa opened it up in a big game. I was sitting on my couch calling out what was coming. Did the same thing when I was at the Iowa game. It is crazy and it needs to stop.
define big game
at the time, Illinois seemed it could be big. At the time Michigan seemed like it could be big. Last year’s Wisconsin game was big. And those were also all away games. For home games, MSU last year was big.
Now if you are asking, “when was the last time you think JoePa opened it up against a defense that was in our backfield the whole game?” then that’s a different question. But how exactly do you expect them to “open it up”? Maybe they tried to open it up, couldn’t, and instead of trying to use a flawed strategy they decided to play the close game and hope they make more mistakes than we do.

True
You raise a good point there. I guess we have done better against certain teams and coaches, but it seems that against Ferentz and Tressel we resort back to trying to play a cat and mouse game. Luckily last year it worked, but against USC, Iowa, and OSU we have failed. Is it all Joe’s fault of course not, but some of it does fall on him for the coaching staff. Are you honestly happy that we 99.9% of the time play cover 3? While OSU won and scored towards the end, it is games like these why the Big Ten has a terrible reputation b/c nothing has changed. I totally agree that weather will play a part in the style the Big Ten plays, but the weather was perfect on Saturday.
Ohio State's scores
were not cause by the Cover 3 defense. They were caused by [a] crappy special teams, and [b] failure to play the cover 3 effectively.
The world will never know what play got called in a situation where Clark got sacked by three guys in two seconds. Maybe it was a triple reverse, option, flea flicker off of a fumble rooskie. But it doesn’t matter for shit because chances are it got blown up a half a second after the snap.
There are a lot of people bitching about the play calling today. But nobody is saying a damn thing about what should have been called. Don’t be greedy brother, if you have an idea, speak up.
Beat Indiana, I guess.
I have stated my idea
Get rid of the cover 3. The other thing they can do is start playing the best athletes. No Hodges?? So there is my point again, brother.
Get rid of cover three
Why, it worked. The kid blew the coverage. It happens.
What’s Beamer going to say? Put your best players on the field and practice it?
Beat Indiana, I guess.
well said
My fingers hurt from responding to absurd claims that the coaches refused to call plays that everyone knows would have won the game. From now on just tack me on to what jesse. says.

What jesse. said
The cover 3 has served us well for a long time.
Playcalling did not cost us this game. The offensive line cost us this game. Rebuilding years happen. Where were you in 1976? Or 1983? Or 1987? Or 1995?

Football has changed a lot since those years
Better athletes, new schemes, etc. Who in the NFL sits in a cover 3 all day? Look at what Monte Kiffin is doing at UT with his D. Constant change.
Are we in the NFL?
Cover 3 is most weak against a pro style passing attack with an experienced quarterback. Who in college football has that anymore?

The Colonel Mustard comment made me laugh b/c every time this guy in my office wears this ugly yellow shirt, we call him Col. Mustard. (He also has bright yellow one and we call him daffodil, or buttercup, or dandelion – it’s a bouqet of fun the madder he gets!)

Someday you’ll learn CJ
After a few years, you’ll become desensitized enough by these types of losses that they won’t bother you for more than a day or two. Once you get to this place of zen, you’ll realize it’s not fair to ask your team to do what other “elite” teams do – address glaring deficiencies such as special teams, overcome/address offensive line issue (in all fairness, they take years to mesh and develop), be more progressive with playcalling or play the best athlete etc. There’s no need to ask for better from the coach or system; this isn’t the NFL for god’s sake.
In fact, until you get to that place of happiness, don’t come onto this blog and ruin my bliss. Go beat the dog, chop down a tree or find somewhere productive to take out your frustration.
Except
None of this; address glaring deficiencies such as special teams, overcome/address offensive line issue (in all fairness, they take years to mesh and develop), be more progressive with play calling or play the best athlete etc., is true.
We had a fantastic offensive line last season, and our special teams are usually very good. As far as progressive with play calling, they revamped the offense in it’s entirety just a year ago, and for the past two seasons we’ve had statistically one of the best offenses in the nation. Who’s the athlete that should be on the field but isn’t?
There are unquestionably holes on the team that need to be addressed. The thing is, by throwing a fit about these holes, you’ll wind up disappointed because next year’s team will have all different problems, because after all, this isn’t the NFL for god’s sake.
Beat Indiana, I guess.
"who's the athlete that should be on the field but isn't?"
The only one I can really think of would be Anthony Fera for kick-off duties (and perhaps long FG attempts).
The coaches know the situation better than me, though, so maybe he really did need a redshirt year.

Honestly, the point I was attempting to make has nothing to do with those issues individually. Yes, they all exist to some degree for every team. However, if a fan wants to ask questions on a blog to try to help understand why Saturday seems to occur over and over against good teams, I think they’re fully entitled to post. They are NOT irrelevant questions and if they are, please explain to me what the right questions are because the product has not been acceptable for both (notice 2 only) good teams we’ve played this season.
If you watched Saturday’s game and are satisfied, good for you, you’re in the happy place. I don’t have to be an expert or know what plays they should call to expect a better performance. I’m just tired of every time someone writes a semi-critical post, they’re told that really everything’s peachy.
by 16andCounting on Nov 10, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions
Nobody said everything's peachy
What I tried to say is that every team is different, and has different problems. This team lost games this year for reasons different than last years team did, or next years team will.
What I took issue with is listing a bunch of things as “habitual” problems, when none of them are. The answer to why the offensive line sucks isn’t “Dick Anderson can’t coach”, it’s we lost a the Rimmington Award winner at center, and a first team all Big Ten player at guard.
When we can’t pass effiecently next year, the answer is going to be Kevin Newsome is a sophmore, not that Jay and Galen all the sudden got stupid again.
I hate to quote Bobby Bowden; but back in the 1990’s they asked him why his teams tended to come up short in “big games”. His answer was something to the effect of, “it seems like the game gets big the second we lose it”.
Was Iowa a big game? Or was it “big” simply because we lost?
This teams failures don’t have a damn thing to do with little game or big game, they have everything to do with attrition on the Offensive Line. Obviously it follows that better teams are more able to take advantage of that.
At the end of the day, you can write whatever you want. We all do. I get “trying to understand”, it’s just that you’re making it too complicated. All you had to do was watch the Ohio State game, and you could summarize the problem in two sentances.
Beat Indiana, I guess.
I actually agree with Bowden
Was Iowa a big game? Or was it "big" simply because we lost?
Funny. Before the game, I seem to recall people acting like we should blow them out. Then, after the game…

Fair enough
You make your point well and you’re probably very right in that the line is the root of most problems this year.
CJ seems to believe (as I do) that the problem is more systemic than just a poor o-line BUT to each his own..

I point to Colin Cowherd in times like this...
Cowherd always rips people for criticizing play-calling. “Yeah, you sit up there in Row 53 and you know what play works better than the guy being paid to disect 10’s of hours of gametape the whole week long, better than the guy that practices with his players getting to know their own strengths and weakneses, better than the guy with 380-some wins. If you call into this show and complain about play-calling…or the refs…save yourself the trouble and just go to ”http://www.tinfoilonmyhead.com" target="_blank">www.tinfoilonmyhead.com instead"
Yeah, but Cowherd is a complete loudmouth, jackass hack. You would have to force me to suffer through the Ludovico technique in order to get me to watch/listen to anything that idiot says.
