Preparing for the post-Paterno era

I want to make it clear, first and foremost, that I don't want Joe Paterno to leave. Well, eventually, of course, but I'm not going to overreact after a couple tough losses and through out the other 40-some years. The guy's earned the right to leave when he's good and ready, and my guess is that is after the 2011 season.  Here are my candidates for the coaching staff after JoePa calls it quits, and admittedly, it's a dream scenario.

Star-divide

Head Coach: Larry Johnson.  I know, the popular choice would be Tom Bradley, but I think LJ would be a big example of thinking outside the box, which is something this program hasn't done much in a long time. When it comes to Johnson, he's beloved by his players, he's a masterful recruiter, and from everything I've read, he's a great guy, though his son doesn't help him out in that regard.  One need look no further than his defensive lines, which are always spectacular and churn out more pros than any other position. But also, he's black, and for a "backwards thinking" traditional program like Penn State to hire a black head coach would render a groundswell of support and publicity.

Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach: Bill Callahan. Right now, Callahan is the line coach and "running game coordinator" for the Jets, and has taken a team with Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene to the top of the league in rushing yardage, and Mark Sanchez has been sacked the 6th fewest times of any quarterback.  Even when his teams at Nebraska struggled, he was known as a good recruiter. No ties to Penn State, sure, but if he wanted the job, we'd be fools not to give it to him.

Defensive Coordinator: Al Golden. I'm presuming that Bradley would be so mad about being passed over for the head coaching spot that he would pull a Sandusky and leave, and Golden would come over from Temple with the knowledge that he would succeed Larry Johnson when the time comes.  Golden has been mentioned as a possible successor to Paterno, but to me he needs to put together more than a single good year at Temple first.  Let him start out smaller here, and work on his recruiting before becoming head coach.

Quarterbacks Coach: Kerry Collins. Collins' NFL career is already pretty much over, and I'm assuming that in two more years he will be ready to call it quits.  We all know what a great QB Collins was while he was here and, admittedly, that doesn't always carry over to coaching. However, he's pretty smart, and has a ton of experience to share with the players.  However, if we continue with the Spread HD in the (hopefully) post-Jay era, perhaps Zack Mills would be a better choice.

Yeah I know

But I doubt we’d be exploring this topic had the game gone the other way.

Beat Indiana, I guess.

that's probable

But it doesn’t mean it isn’t worth discussing.

Head Coach – Kirk Ferentz. He’s done a great job with mah Hawkeyes. He’d be perfect as someone who stands around with a blank expression while Paul Johnson runs everything.

Offensive coordinator – Paul Johnson. Kevin Newsome, Evan Royster, Stepfhon Green, and Brandon Beachum. Best flexbone set ever.

Defensive coordinator – Pat Narduzzi. Look, let’s face the facts: PSU fans love to bitch about their defensive coaches. And Pat Narduzzi would be perfect. His belief is that he should never change his defensive sets. Damnit, the 4-3 looks perfectly against a shotgun 4 wide.

Come down from the ledge

People have been anticipating the Post-Paterno era since 1988.

Al Golden

As much as I respect and admire the work Al has done at Temple…after having a strong year this year….Golden is now the new Greg Schiano. The coach with PSU ties, that takes a terrible program and turns it around. People will say “imagine what he can do with PSU facilities and recruiting”.

IF we didn’t get smoked on Saturday, we wouldn’t be talking about this, so there is no need to even do it.

The time will come in 3 years when PSU has to make a tough choice. Does the job go to a loyal Paterno man in Tom Bradley, a top notch recruiter in Larry Johnson, darkhorse and long shot Jay Paterno….or do we go outside the program and hopefully don’t create the revolving door of head coaches.

Oh, no no no

Tom Bradley would laugh in Rich Rod’s face. You guys are stuck with GERG, so enjoy the ride, baby! Unless of course GERG takes the fall for this year’s “disappointments” like the DC last year. What kind of contract did he sign anyway? I never heard.

Why just head coach?

Why not hire all of the Super Best Friends as the coaching staff?

Oh, and I’d rather take Kanye West over Jay-Z. I mean, Kanye is the voice of my generation. Or some self-appointed crap like that…

I pegged Kanye as DL coach

He’s pretty good at interrupting presentations, so I figured he could teach the DL how to interrupt the opposing passing game.

but JoePa has one of the best coaching tenures OF ALL TIME!!!

by dawsonPSU10 on Nov 9, 2009 10:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Turrible, unacceptable, man, mine is better:

Head coach – Kirk Ferentz.

Offensive coordinator – Robert Nivelle (The hero of Chemin des Dames!). Sherman’s offense is too predicated on fast players who can live off the land. We’ll never get those kinds of players. We need someone like Nivelle who can keep churning ahead despite casualties. Run that ball up the middle! Nevermind the enfillading artillery fire and breastworks!

Defensive coordinator – Tenuta Blitz. Would put to an end bitching about cover 3.

Recruiting coordinator – Jay Paterno.

I know Jesse. said it in the first comment

but for the love of Zug, don’t start with this BS right now. I know you gave your little forward about this not being about losing, but seriously: come on. Post this stuff on your own blog and don’t waste our time with it here. Paterno was just given a three year, multiple asterisk, contract, of which nothing will stop him from completing. And if recruiting keeps up it’s current pace, and his health is as good as it is right now, he’ll be HC for another “three or four more years”.

I know your intentions were good in this post, save it for when his contract is up, you sound like a goddamn reporter from pre-contract extension 2008.

Laugh at this comment

Sorry but I don’t see Paterno going anywhere anytime soon.

Seriously.

What makes anyone think he’s going to retire after the 2011 season? Because we anticipate having a shot at a MNC that year and Joe will be 2 years older and Joe wants to go out on top? Think again. Paterno is never going to retire as Penn State head coach unless he gets seriously ill and physically can’t do the job anymore. He will be the head coach until he dies. The man loves the situation he’s in right now. He’s still the head coach and calls the shots but his responsibilities have lessened to the point where he can trust his assistants with large portions of the program.

He’ll be 85. I don’t care how long he wants to coach, he’s 50/50 every season for a while now. That’s just nature.

My grandfather practiced medicine into his 80’s. He was in great shape, smart, totally together. He went to work in that condition on a Tuesday. Wednesday he had a stroke, today, not so much unfortunately.

That’s just life.

Beat Indiana, I guess.

You are somewhat right....

LJ will be the next coach. He fits the corporate image (married w/ family),would be “an out-of-the-box” hire which would be viewed as forward thinking and above all else….He would serve as the ‘bridge-coach’ following a legend! No established ‘name’ coach wants to fill JoePa’s shoes…(Ferentz,Johnson,Gruden,Schiano, etc……)

LJ’s a great recruiter and he stayed at PS for a reason when Illinois came calling last year. Remember the name Jim Caldwell for down the road and as an asst to LJ…?

I too do not look at Joe to retire just because of loss to OSU……it’s an amalgamation of the last 10 years and the fact he is 82! Knowone is the same person at 82 than they were at 72….62…..52. The game hasn’t passed him by,he’s just not as sharp in making adjustments and game-planning. You all remember the games where PS would be close at halftime and come out and exploit the opposition in the 2nd half by being outcoached……This hasn’t happened in the last decade…..God bless you Joe…YOU ARE PENN STATE FOOTBALL….much like General Motors and Ford were The Auto Industry.
