So Long Casual Penn State Fan
Well, I guess this is where you get off. Don't forget your lawn chairs and Igloo cooler out of the trunk. Not that you'll be needing those tailgating supplies anymore this year. Indiana in November? Yeah right.
We're still heading down the road a bit, but you look like you've had enough of this season. We wouldn't want to bore you any more than you already are. I mean, it's only Indiana, Michigan State, and the Outback Bowl. Who cares, right? It was a fun ride while it lasted. Thanks for gracing us with your company for these ten weeks. We'll be headed down to Tampa. And then there's the basketball season. You're welcome to come along for the ride if you want.
No? You've got too much to do to get ready for the holidays you say? We don't blame you. Got to get an early start on that Christmas shopping. I'm sure Walmart is having a midnight sale on apathy. Better stock up.
Make sure you get everything out of the back seat. Did you get your cell phone charger?
Well then, good luck and we'll see you next August. Don't be a stranger.
Signed,
Your friends at BSD

You think?
I don’t think the Big Ten is going to get two BCS teams this year. If we finish third that puts us in the Outback Bowl unless the Capital One grabs us over Iowa, which is a possibility given how well our fanbase travels and how it’s been about a decade since we played in that game.

It's possible
I’m sure they would love to have us. I don’t think they would take us if Ohio State is available. But I could see them picking us over Iowa. And really, we’ll be tied with Iowa if they lose to Ohio State, so that is a really good possibility now that I think about it.

If Stanzi is out the rest of the season (I admit to not looking into the prognosis at this point) I’d say we’d be chosen over them. Then again, this is all riding on both Iowa and us winning out.

if there are 2 teams tied for 2nd or 3rd, they just pick who they’d rather have? i guess i’ve never thought about it much…

Only bowls tied to a confrence champ have to take a specific team
Other than that, they get to take whomever sells the most tickets. There are some rules about not being able to take a 6 win team over a 7 win team, but that is about it.
Beat Indiana, I guess.
by jesse. on Nov 10, 2009 8:49 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No tiebreakers
The other bowls only have a picking order and have no obligation to choose teams based on where they finish. The only rules are:
1. A bowl can’t choose a team that has 2+ fewer overall wins than an available team. So, if a 9-3 team is available, the bowl can’t choose an 7-5 team over them. But it can choose an 8-4 team over a 9-3 team. Overall record is all that matter, the conference record does not (an 8-4/4-4 team can be chosen over a 9-3/7-1 team in theory).
This is a Big Ten rule with the bowls, though most conference have the same rule.
2. All teams with winning records (7-5 or better) must be chosen before any 6-6 team can be taken. A bowl can only choose a 6-6 team if no 7+ win teams are eligible.
This is an NCAA rule.
If PSU and Iowa and Wisconsin all finish 10-2 and are available, the Citrus Bowl can be free to choose whichever one of them they wanted regardless of head to head results.
by Laaaaazzz on Nov 10, 2009 9:22 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Capital One
Yeah, if we win out — obviously, not a given with playing at MSU — I think we are virtually certain to go to the Citrus Bowl. In fact, I would argue that we are more likely to make a BCS bowl at 10-2 than the Outback Bowl.
If tOSU beats Iowa, then tOSU goes to the Rose and it’s between a 10-2 Iowa and 10-2 PSU for the Citrus — and PSU definitely wins that, based on more fans, more TV coverage, and even a higher ranking and less recent loss (there would also be the perception of Iowa “reeling” by losing 2 of their last 3). Wisconsin might also be 10-2, but I think we would get chosen over the Badgers as well — they’ve played in Orlando for a bowl 3 out of the last 4 years.
If Iowa beats tOSU, then it’s a choice between 9-3 tOSU and 10-2 PSU. Yes, the Citrus might prefer tOSU considering how long it’s been since they haven’t been there forever (1995 season) but it’s not like we’ve been there that recently either (2002 season). And again tOSU would have the more recent loss and likely a lower rank.
We’ll see…
by Laaaaazzz on Nov 9, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, more I think about it, I think we’ll be in a BCS bowl rather than the Citrus if we end up at 10-2. Notre Dame’s loss to Navy took them out of consideration (I don’t see them climbing up high enough in the rankings to be eligible even if they win out) and so I only see 3 obvious at large teams — SEC champ loser (Bama/Florida), USC (assuming Oregon still ends up winning the Pac-10 and going to the Rose), and TCU/Boise St. The fourth at large would have to come from the Big 10/Big 12/Big East/ACC or a non-BCS team. The bowls are not willingly taking a non-BCS conference team. Neither Pitt nor Cinci (the likely second place Big East team) would be chosen [WVU might conceivably be chosen as an at large if they were eligible, but if they won out to finish 10-2, they’d end up as Big East champ and go automatically]. Oklahoma St is the only possibility from the Big 12 and it would require them to win out (and even then I don’t think a 10-2 Ok St gets chosen over 10-2 PSU). That leaves an ACC non-winner, basically Miami (FL), could does have some national following, but not really a traveling fan base — and would a bowl in Phoenix or New Orleans want them (since they won’t go to the Orange cuz that is where the ACC champ goes)? I think a 10-2 PSU goes over a 10-2 Miami.
The big wrench would be if Texas ends up not winning the Big 12, but gets in as an at large. Then a 10-2 PSU would get dropped down.
Admittedly, it’s possible that a 10-2 Iowa (losing to tOSU) gets chosen over 10-2 PSU, but I doubt it. Especially with Iowa having lost 2 of their last 3 to end the season.
by Laaaaazzz on Nov 9, 2009 9:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think I heard on one of the broadcasts last weekend
that the Cinci game, last year in the Orange, was the lowest rated BSC game “ever”?? They had 35,100 in their stadium (that is capacity, I think) for the UConn game,. They just don’t have the large fan base or tradition to travel well.
PITT is a better draw, but only marginally. So even if PITT and UCONN went 10-1, it is very possible that the second place Big East team doesn’t get the BCS. If WVU beats them both, it even makes it a better possibility. That puts PITT at 10-2 (or 9-3) and Cionci at least 11-1 (losing to a fairly low ranked WVU) or 10-2.
Truthfully, I don’t see Cinci losing to one or the other. They could score against anybody. However, their defense is only fair. Lot like our ’94 team.
However, all the speculation is moot (I once had to explain to an upper level manager at work that it wasn’t mute!) if we don’t take care of business. I also think we have to really whip the Hoosiers and MSU. “Marginal wins” may not do it.
Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

Nippert Stadium
Capacity is 35,000 and the UConn game was technically their all-time attendance record listed at 35,100. Other games have sold out as well, but they list their attendance real weird. All sellout games in 2007 were listed at 35,097, all sell outs in 2008 were listed at 35,098 and prior to the UConn game, the other sellouts in 2009 were listed at 35,099. I believe that their game against Pitt in 2007 was their first ever sellout since the stadium was expanded to 35,000.

2 regular season games left.
Let’s remember that ANYTHING can happen. There could still be a three way tie for the Big Ten title. So what if the Rose Bowl is out of reach. Every game counts. This team can still go 10-2 and earn a match-up with a quality opponent in a big time Bowl game.
Would you rather be a Rutgers fan?

Rose was pretty much out of reach all year...
Think about it…PSU goes undefeated, it gets the MNC..no question.
Ties with OSU or Iowa for the Big Ten, OSU or Iowa goes to the Rose since we were there last year.
About the only way they could get to the Rose is if we would have beaten OSU this past weekend, and OSU goes on to beat Iowa.
I’d take a BCS bowl, but it’s unlikely…

If I was, the only 2 games of the season I would have attended or watched on TV were the 2 losses.
But instead, I have been to every game this year…each one consisting of 8 hours of driving (round trip)…and I wouldn’t trade that for anything (except maybe 2 wins instead of the losses). This is my team, win or lose.

Me too
This is the worst type of season to be a die hard. There were no great wins. Last year OSU offset Iowa. This year all of our wins were games we were supposed to win so I only felt relief. Our losses were just painful and maddening. If we don’t win out and then win a bowl against a decent opponent, this whole season will be a waste.

I'm under the false belief that it's still a possibility
Here’s what I posted in the late game open thread on Saturday…
I’ve just had a thought
Let me preempt this by saying this is not meant to be an attack on Pitt. Nonetheless, let’s say Pitt loses their last two Big East games (Cincy and WVU – it’s feasible). If you’re feeling frisky, feel free to add in a loss to ND. Then, lets say Temple continues their winning ways and at the very least, loses in the MAC championship game to CMU. Again, it’s not unthinkable.
Are you still following me? Well, I’m sorry, but let’s continue anyway.
This means Temple is one of the top 3 teams in the MAC and Pitt falls to the 3/4 range of the Big East. This means that the International Bowl might get the chance to pick both Pitt and Temple to play in Toronto.
"But Icersguy – that won’t sell tickets!" It’s the International Bowl – it wasn’t going to sell tickets anyway. Hell, you need a passport to see that game! But I’d watch that game for the match-up of the two other PA teams alone.

Yep. Today is no better, either.
I just find it striking how they all come out of the woodwork whenever they manage to eke out more than 6 wins, and their measuring stick is always Penn State’s record. I guess we ought to take that as a compliment. And, at least it only happens every 5 or 6 years. Well, their moment of gloating should be fleeting. They’ll have to face an actual offense this week, then again in two weeks.

I never bought into the preseason hype and rolled my eyes a bit when PSU got up as high as #5 or whatever they were for that brief week. I find it hard to believe that any team would improve year over year if it lost as many players as PSU did on both lines and its entire cast of WR’s. with each passing year I become more “casual.” It has nothing to do with the losses and everything to do with realizing that other things like family are more important. Goodbye, casual Penn State students
We’ll really miss the 10,000 of you who complained you didn’t get season tickets, then didn’t bother to show up to any games that weren’t Iowa or Ohio State. I’m sure the extra hours of sleep every Saturday morning will allow you greater time to regret the sled dogs you hooked up with Friday night. Maybe the extra time will allow you more time to shower off the sweat of the guy who anonymously grinded you from behind at Indigo. Enjoy it!
Either way, thankfully you won’t have to bother showing up in the second quarter again this season. See you next fall – but only for Michigan!

I get what everyone is saying but....
why should people not be disgusted and disappointed by this team?
We played cupcake after cupcake with an insane 8 game home schedule. I think a lot of fans are 1) burnt out if they went to all the home games and 2) disappointed by the terrible showing in the games we needed to win.
As a lifelong fan and alum, I will always root for Dear Old State but I can understand how some would be less than enthused about the rest of the season.

Seems people only care if we:
A. WIN FOREVER ALWAYS
B. Play top ten teams
Everything else is pretty ‘meh’ for the casual fan.
As far as disappointed, yes. We had a chance at a Big Ten title, and blew it. Disgusted…. not sure who’s disgusted. If we’re sick of 10 win seasons and NYD bowls, then I think people need to get their head examined.
by Tailgate Shogun on Nov 9, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think a lot of people were thinking that the rebirth that happened would keep building and lead to an MNC. I can’t fault that, but I can fault the disappointment in having a solid, if not great, season year-in, year-out. If we go 10-2, 11-1 or so every year, I can certainly live with it. As long as we beat aOSU every other year.

I see what you are saying but I would trade a string of 9-3 seasons playing quality out of conference teams for that one 12-0 every few years where we know, without a doubt, that we are good enough to make the title game.

Yah I agree with that
Our team quit, twice, at home, in games they needed to win. They were out coached, out executed, out toughed and out worked, and they’d quit by halftime of both games. By way of contrast, in last year’s Rose Bowl we were clearly going to lose, but the team never stopped fighting and I was proud of the boys even in the loss.
I’m a little disgusted about this year and it’s hard to really care right now. I guess that makes me casual, but really it’s just a defense mechanism used to deal with our team’s two gutless performances. The end result will be fine – I think we’ll win out and go to a decent bowl. It’s just how full of quit we looked . . . it hurts so it’s only natural to tune out for a bit.

These Casual Fan letters are meant to be divisive, right? Similar to the student attendance chastisements and the ’I’m an alum, you’re not’ angles. I mean, we did lose, so let’s take it another step further and fight amongst ourselves in the living room, right? Mostly kidding, tho historically I’ve been serious in my distaste for these. This one feels better as an attack on the Oh Noes crowd, and this cat responded to the bell, fit the bill, cliche, cliche etc something.

The Intent of the Casual Fan Letters
They’re just my way of calling out the fans and asking them if they are going to believe or give up. I don’t really intend for these letters to be divisive, but they seem to often come out that way. In my book, anyone who spends time reading a PSU blog when they should be working isn’t a casual fan. So these letters aren’t really meant to be addressed to the readers of BSD.
The inspiration for these letters actually came from some relatives of mine. They had season tickets and went to the game, but if you pressed them they probably couldn’t name ten players on the team. It took them two years to realize Jerry Sandusky retired. The only reason they went to the games were to keep up with their friends who were die hard PSU fans. When their friends decided to start tailgating in style and buy a motor home, my relatives went out and bought a motor home. They were the people sucking down their last cigarette before they go up to their seat, and the people who left halfway through to second quarter to go suck down another one because they couldn’t wait until halftime.
It always bugged me when I came out of the stadium after a loss feeling like I had been kicked in the stomach. I’d go back to their tailgate party and they were more worried about where they left the cheese and crackers instead of wondering how the hell this team was going to win anything with Matt Senecca at quarterback.
So these posts should always be taken as tongue-in-cheek. It’s just me poking a little fun at the Penn State fans who don’t die a little bit after every loss like I do.

by Laaaaazzz on Nov 10, 2009 10:24 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Also something to take into consideration
is the fact that for tens of thousands of the fans that show up, getting to the game is quite an undertaking that consumes a lot of time and resources. Take me for instance, I went to 4 games this year, including the NW game in Chicago. I had originally made plans to go to the IU game, but to be honest, I’m really not that interested in spending the time or money to get up there from DC when I can watch it from the comforts of my home. I think the casual fans should be given some slack.
I think what angers/disappoints/ most “casual” fans (and the diehards too) is the lack of accountability and lack of change within the staff/program. The same weaknesses seem to plague the team year in and year out. At most programs they’d be addressed. At Penn State we get a healthy dose of “ehhhhh, you don’t know what you’re talking about” and “ehhhh, I’ll have to take a look at some things”. It’s frustrating as fuck.

In that regard, I wouldn’t be so bold if I were a Pitt fan — they have 3 very losable games to end the season and could easily look very silly if they are flaming PSU fans right now. Next Season?
Don’t kid yourself, why come back next season?
For the Newsome era to begin? Ohhh, goodie.
Sorry, but the offense will still be unimaginative, while painfully conversative, in games that matter. Which thanks to scheduling there are no more than 3 per year.
The special teams will still be an embarrassment in all facets. Kick return, Fair Catch Signaling (aka Punt Return), and Punting.
I know, how about more Tom Bradley defense? Bend but not break, until you break.
Let’s go Penn State Casual. We’re not fans because fan is short for fanatic, and fanatics suck down the kool aid, and when the going gets tough, they simply lower their expectations.
Penn State Casual should return when the offense shows an ability to score in games that matter, the Special Teams units look like they’ve actually been coached and the program gives Special Teams the attention it deserves, the defense is an aggressor, and the schedule has less than a half dozen laughers.
See you when the current regime resigns. (or sadly, but more likely, dies)

I never was really into this season 100% to begin with, blame it on the shitty schedule and the fact we looked like garbage against the two ranked teams we faced (and at home nonetheless). So excuse me if I’ve already shifted my focus to basketball season.
And another thing: They need to revert back to the old student ticketing system where students can sell their paper tickets for however much they want. That way, you won’t see half-empty student sections any longer.

Casual Fan?
Hey, I’m trying to figure out if I am a casual fan. I graduated on a year that we won the national championship *(Blackledge/Warner). On Halloween weekend, I joined my daughter at Senior Night at her high school football game and danced as Herman Munster to Thriller with her high school dance team at halftime. I got home at 11pm, and was up at 6am to coach my son’s Pee Wee team in their playoff game. They won that and their Super Bowl game. By 11:50am, my daughter and I were on (in, haha) a plane to ORD to try to make the 3:30 kickoff in Evanston. We got to Chicago, rented a car, got to the game and watched a lackluster start turn into a nice win. Three football games in two states and three different stadiums in less than 24 hours My daughter is applying to State and trying to get on the Lionettes. Then, I Tivo the tPOSu game due to a prior commitment, admonishing anyone I meet who may tip the score. I get home after midnight, crack open a cold one, start the game and am filled with overwhelming excitement that turned into hopes for Paternovers, then fear and trepidation. A 48 year old man almost had a tear well up in his eye over a football game. Is that a casual fan?

This was an awesome game!

Funny....
I don’t see many casual fans on BSD. I’d say most of the posters here post daily.

blocked facebook at work for me too!
They actually blocked most blogs but for some reason, which i’m in no way complaining about, BSD still works.

Google Reader man
Should give you access to any blogs you want. Google home page, links at the top, click on “more,” hit “Reader,” (you need a g-mail account) add subscriptions, and read any blogs/twitters you want. It’s beautiful.

Casual bloggers
Just because we get smeared like a dead fly on an old shoe we don’t get an Indiana photoshop thread. Come on, we are talking Corso here.

I will be there Saturday. I am just too depressed to hate. Is it worse to be a casual fan or a casual hater?

Dude! All you semi-trolls
and non-casual fans…especially the lawyers…do some more trolling over at BlockO-doucheabag’s post on Bleacher Report where he totally calls out BSD and trashes it. And I really would like to see one of you lawyers with balls to send him a C&D on the photoshop stealing.

I think Mike handled it pretty well, but it’s a shame he had to defend himself at all.

By the time I got there...
The story was so buried, I hesitated to give the kid the satisfaction of more comments.
Suffice to say, what that guy managed to get posted over there barely qualifies as a halfway decent fanpost here. It seems that a lot of would be pundits have decided to try and build a reputation for cleverness and intellegence in the comment section around here.
Price of fame maybe?

I tried it
And it sucked. Like bleacher usually does. Man, this week reminded me how much I used to hate (and not the cool, fun hate of Hate Week hate) chat rooms and message boards back in the day. I get sucked in reading the tripe and just feel shoddy and yucky and….dumber.

OSU Game
As a season ticket holder for more than 30 years I watched the game in disbelief of what I was seeing. It remeinded me of the Michigan game a few years ago where Anthony the poorly developed highly talented quarterback and PSU were made to look like fools. On Saturday that was the most poorly prepared team I have seen at Penn State. I really enjoy the game of football when two teams are talented and prepared and go at each other. This team is not prepared to play football. Shame on the coaching staff. I don’t mind losing a good game but I hate seeing a Penn State team not prepared to play a game. I think PPSU will get a minor bowl against a hyped up team like Notre Dame and we will hear all the BS about legendary coaches and storied programs etc etc. Two poorly prepared teams playing in a minor bowl isn’t what I want to see. It is damaging to the Penn State image.

I said the same thing
I thought it was the worst beatdown at Beaver Stadium since either the last OSU game or the Michigan game in 2006.
