What this bowl game means to the records...
Rambler suggested this be a Fanpost instead of a Fanshot.
One of the lesser hyped things about last year's Rose Bowl was that Penn State are currently battling for best Bowl Game winning % in history. Last year we came in PSU #1 and USC #2, and we left conceding that title.
With a win this year, we can pass USC even if they win:
USC 31 16 .6595
PSU 26 13 .6585
A win would bring us to .675 and likewise USC to .667
Another stat: Currently Alabama and Penn State are tied with 811 all time wins. This may or may not reflect the 2009 SEC championship. We are also 3rd all time with 14 11+ win seasons and 'Bama is 4th with 13.
A bowl win would give Joe his 394th win. That means 6 more wins until his 400th. A win in the Citris bowl could set the stage for next year's Michigan game to possibly be Joe's 400th win (assume we lose to 'Bama and Iowa). Since he broke Bryants record against Ohio State this would only be fair.
Finally we are currently 16-16 against SEC opponents, and a win against LSU would give Penn State an impossible winning record against the SEC.
Thanks for the fanpost! Please do not post any content from a premium site that requires a subscription. Also, if you just want to share a link consider using fanshots instead. Thanks.

also Pitt is losing 3 NC’s they never earned in the first place, according to the only site that claimed they had a right to them in the first place.
CBFDataWarehouse was the only independent site that Pitt fans had to prove they earned those titles, and w/out that site backuping their delusions, they’re SOL.

Wow
Forgot about Auburn’s apparently historic 2004 run. Getting three titles removed? Sucks to be them. Although I don’t know how you can claim a title in the BCS era when you didn’t play for the title. Are Cincy, Boise, and TCU going to claim titles this year?
And that list looks a lot different if you look at post-facemask football (I generally use this in arguments as the time when real, modern football began, but feel free to disagree with me).
Also, millzners, your post has some screwy formatting going on…

Recall that the Coaches voted Auburn #1 despite them not playing in the BCS Champ...
That’s why they no longer matter.

I would say "modern football" began when this guy showed up:

But I like the “modern facemask” idea because we’ve been a better program than Michigan since that time.

That's almost exactly why I use that method
The future wifey is UM alum, so every time I get into with her friends, especially after having too many smoothies, I use this method and it generally works. I still haven’t found a retort for the “winningest program” argument.

I don't see any red X's or post that has exclamation points
but on this site, the format of exclamation point image url exclamation point will then insert that picture into the post, so what happened there was that it was looking for an image at the web address “one” which doesn’t exist, and so there you get a red X for image not found.

Tricks of the trade, friendo.
Or, the more common scenario, it’s me getting liquored up because I know less people in the social event, and eventually I start a conversation with some Ann Arbor junkie (sometimes literally) and it eventually turns to my team is better than your team. Although the times when the verbal combatant is also pretty hammed up is the best, cause then we just buy each other shots and rip on OSU and MSU.

Or maybe you should check more than one site
NCAA record book lists 1910, 1915, 1916, 1918, 1929, 1931, 1936, 1937, and 1976.
I don’t know why we claim ’34 since we lost to Minnesota at home while the Gophers went undefeated.

’34, ’35, and ’36.

Pitt and Minnesota didn't play in '35 or '36
The Gophers ran the table in ’35, they deserve that title.
They were both 1-loss teams in ‘36, but Pitt had a debatably harder schedule and won the Rose bowl. It’s a shared title.
by SlingStone on Dec 10, 2009 2:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe you should heed your own advice
1. NCAA Record book only follows the NC’s picked by Parke H. Davis for those years in discussion… He was the only one who selected Pitt as national champions in 1929 and 1931, while an overhwelming number of other selectors chose otherwise. Literally Pitt has one source for their claim to these titles, while ND and USC have many. The official NCAA.org site does not share your opinion of those years (page 79).
2. Any claim to a title prior to the Coaches poll in 1936 is a simple matter of concensus among the major selectors. The only reason you are even in the discussion is because of the work of Parke H. Davis. Out of all the major selectors used for those NC’s, he was the only one in 1929 and in 1931 that picked PItt, while all the rest picked the real national champions. In fact, NCAA record book aside, you have around 4 sources combined that you can use to claim those 2 NC’s, while the other teams (you know, the ones that actually deserve the NC) have over 50.
3. Even if you blindly want to believe the NCAA Record book, do you really think you deserve the 1929 title?
1929 Pitt lost 47-14 in the Rose Bowl to the defending National Champions USC while Notre Dame went undefeated, and yet you claim that season as a National Championship? Seriously? Based on the overwhelming number of selectors you guys were out voted 27-1. Sorry.
1931 you lost the vote 27-3, and one of those three people includes the CFBDW site. USC gets to claim that one.
You can go to any of these websites to verify that you have no claim to those titles:

I see what you mean
I think our disagreement is less about history and records and more about “a title” versus “The title.” I think any team-sport with out a tournament should be leery of declaring champions and that’s why the NCAA lets other organizations do it. The AP and any other organization can declare any team they see fit to be the National Champions at the end of the season. If someone declares your 1994 season or Utah of 2008 or Auburn of 2004 championship teams, I think that’s fine and the universities should be allowed to put up placards or whatever they want.
That said, I agree Parke Davis is definitely the sketchiest of all organizations/polls/formulas because it’s a retroactive title based on a single “football historian.”
I’ll trade you 1929 and 1931 for 1910 and 1915.
by SlingStone on Dec 10, 2009 5:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't see any flaws in this logic.
“if someone declares…championship teams, I think that’s fine and the universities should be allowed to put up placards or whatever they want”
We tried that in 1995 with the New York Times Computer poll, and it sucked.
Also, I now declare Penn State to have won the National Championship in every season for which it has competed in the game of college football.
At least the State College sign businesses will see a boon in these tough economic times.

ROAD TRIP. Unless it’s at OSU. I haven’t looked at the schedule lately, who are the likely games that the game would be played against?
"Have I ever told the story of when I met Miley Cyrus?"
by PSUJunny05 on Dec 10, 2009 1:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
well, depends on who we lose to
if we beat LSU, Alabama, and Iowa (and win the rest), then it would come against Illinois at home
If we lose one game between now and then, then it would be Minnesota away
If we lose 2 games, then it would be Michigan at home
If we lose all 3 of those games, then it would be Northwestern at home.
Of course if we somehow manage to lose all 3 of those PLUS one of the other fodder on our schedule (Youngstown State, Kent State, Temple, then Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Northwestern), it would be @ OSU, if we lose 2 games in addition to those 3, then it would be Indiana “away” (at FedEx field, though).
So I’d say there’s a decent chance it will be at home, though if it IS away I won’t miss it, as I plan on going to that Minnesota game (need to check them and Indiana off of my Big 10 tour)

I always get confused about our all-time record
Are we at 811 or 810? I believe PSU declined a forfeit by OU back in the day but CFDW still counts it as a W in their total. I think Bama is actually 1 ahead of PSU because of the OU situation.

A few things of note!
Your calculating does not include our two ties, if we win we’ll be 27-13-2, which is
.666666666666666666666666666666666666 repeating
A USC victory puts USC at 32 – 16, which is .666666666666666666666666666666666666666666 repeating
Boston College is 13-7, a win, puts them at 14-7, which is .666666666666666666666666666666666 repeating.
Boston College and USC play eachother, so if we win, we can only be tied for first!

by PSUisMyHeart on Dec 10, 2009 4:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
ok, few questions here
First and foremost, this is all very interesting:
CFBDW has us at 26-13-2, 41 games, .65854 % How did they get that %? If you throw the ties out we’re 26/39 = .666666 If you count the ties as games we’re 26/41 = .63415, if you somehow add two ties to make a win we’re 27/41 .65854
Did CFBDW make a mistake, or do ties count as half a win and half a loss? My guess is that’s how they did it, so we technically have 27 wins and 14 losses for calculations sake, so this coming win/loss will take us to .66666 or .64286 respectively.
