I mean he actually plays both sides of the ball. Fullback vs Texas and DE. Nebraska would have won if all the other Nebraska players would have just gotten out of his way.

Lots of people in South and Southeast cover college football...
… and I’m sure fewer than 5 of them with votes have seen more than 30 seconds of a Stanford game.
If Gerhart had put those numbers up in the OMGSEC, we’d have crowned him king and sacrificed our first-born to him already.

I really really like white running backs. Not for any race reason, I just like very rare things.
Alas, I wholly am expecting Mark Ingram to win, even though Gerhart had better numbers in what was a more competitive league this year top to bottom.

Frankly, I won’t complain if Gerhart, Ingram or Suh win…
Although I will bitch and moan about how Odrick playing in a league with better O-linemen and had stats nearly equal to Suh’s, if it should come to that.

Good
He has absolutely no business whatsoever being invited to New York or even being considered for the Heisman. Frankly, I don’t really see what the big deal is with Tebow. Okay, he won a national title, that’s cool and seriously good for him and Florida, that is an incredible accomplishment. However, he DID NOT win two titles. Chris Leak won the first one against O$U and Tebow was just a role-player on that team. The year he won the Heisman, Florida only won nine games (the same amount as PSU that year) and then lost to a slow, big and dumb Big Ten team in the Capitol One Bowl. So spare me national and mainstream media, Tim Tebow is NOT the greatest college athlete of all time, nor is he the greatest person that has ever walked the earth (or on water for that matter). He is good, possibly great, but he isn’t everything everyone makes him out to be and he should not even be a consideration for the Heisman.

Woah
He wasn’t the starting QB on the 2006 national title team but he wasn’t some scrub as a freshman either. He is easily in the conversation for best college football player of all-time though, I don’t know how you can deny him that. He is not “good, possibly great”. He’s great, possibly the best. And you’re right, he shouldn’t be in Heisman consideration this year, and CJ Spiller should’ve gone to NYC over him IMO but that’s not to take away from the guy’s legitimate accomplishments.

Spiller has had a great season, and had a great final game. Which is apparently the deciding factor in the Heisman race (and that bothers me to no end)…
Suh had a solid season and a solid showing against Texas. Is it good enough to top Spiller? I personally don’t think so, but I think both deserve to be there over Tebow.

Look at the stats, Gerhart 1736 yds and 26 tds (144.6 YPG); Next best RB is Ingram 1542 yds, 15 TD (3 Rec) (117.0 YPG).
Gerharts four biggest games: USC 178 Yards 3 TD; Notre Dame 205 Yards, 3 TD; Oregon 223 Yards 3 TDS; California 136 Yards 4 TDS.
If Gerhart Played for USC and had those stats against essentially the same opponents (particularly ND, Oregon, Cal) they wouldnt even invite anyone else to the ceremony. He is the most underrated player in college football, not cause hes a white RB, cause he plays at Stanford.

in my defense
I believe i wrote “essentially the same opponents” for that reason.
Allow myself to rephrase… myself: If Gerhart played for USC and had those numbers against essantially the same schedule, including Oregon, ND and Cal, but not including, for obvious (or not so obvious) reasons USC, he would be the only one invited…
Kidding aside, I still think I made a valid point.
Aaaaand my mom says I’m cool.

hehe, your point was valid
and if you had just left it at “essentially the same opponents” it would have been fine, but then you went all redundant and pointed out the “particular” opponents, which left USC as the only “essential” but not “particular” opponent on that list. I swooped in for the easy kill, and the rest, as they say, is history.
But honestly, I’d still love to watch a USC RB rush for -178 yards and fumble away 3 TDs

Eh.
There’s undoubtedly some future NFL Hall of Famer playing lower-division football right now. I have no idea who, but the odds are excellent that such a person exists. And he’s probably putting up great numbers doing it, if he’s an offensive skill position player. That guy is the most underrated player in college football.
I voted for Gerhart, and think he deserves the Heisman, but let’s not get carried away. There are plenty of freshmen and people at schools more obscure than Stanford that are extremely talented but don’t get anything like the attention Toby’s getting — even if he’s getting nothing like what Ingram, Tebow, and McCoy are getting.

I can't believe this Group is as influenced by the media as the poll suggests....
Suh…..really? He’s good but not Heisman worthy. He wasn’t even in the discussion till Herbie started bringing his name up post the Texas game. Personally…..I think McCoy….even with the bad game against Nebraska he has been getting the job done for years at Texas (and yes I know the Heisman is not a career achievement award, but don’t think that doesn’t come into consideration by the voters). He basically put the horns on his back during the A&M game. IF not McCoy……Ingram. He might not have the numbers that Gerhart does….BUT…….like it or not he plays in a conference where they do play defense. I think the national spotlight of the SEC championship where he basically ripped apart a stout Florida defense may get him the nod. That and the fact that Bama has never had a Heisman winner.
I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?

He’s only in the consideration simply b/c of the three finalists last year, he’s the only one to not have won.
He’s in an offense thats absolutely loaded with top-tier 5-star talent and he still looks mediocre against a half-decent defense (of which they’ve faced very few). His numbers are more a product of the system and the insane talent he has around him. You could put Juice Williams in that offense and he’d look Heisman-worthy.
The Nebraska game was his make or break moment, and that lazy lofting pass out of bounds was the last nail in the coffin. It was pure dumb luck he didn’t lose the game, b/c w/out that horse collar and the subsequent lucky break on when the ball landed, he’d be a running joke.

I was going to write a “you’re accusing us of being sucked in by media hype yet you’re picking McCoy” post, but Millzner’s already got the crux of my argument, and more eloquently than I was going to put it.
I will say that the reason you didn’t hear Suh’s name before Texas was because of his position. People don’t believe linemen are going to win the heisman (because they don’t) so they’re not even in the conversation. The fact that we’re even discussing it should give you an idea of what this guy accomplished. Suh was amazing before Saturday…he just needed a bigger audience.

good point
Both McCoy and Suh were given the same big stage with which to expose themselves (heh heh) as Heisman front-runners. One of them absolutely dominated every play he was on the field for, while the other one choked and gagged his way up to the final second.
McCoy needed a horse collar penalty, a game clock review from the booth, and an oustanding field goal kicker just to win that game. Heisman winners are supposed to be the guys who put the whole team on their back and carry them to victory, not the guys who need every lucky break imaginable just to get the chance to hand the ball to someone else to win the game.

Conferences where they don't play defense
Has this ever been a problem for USC players and Heisman consideration before?
Honestly, I don’t even think the SEC defenses are that good apart from Florida and Bama, and Ingram only had to play against one of those two. They just have some seriously inept offenses down there this year.

Speak for yourself
I had him second or third (behind Gerhart and maybe McCoy) going into that game. It’s not because Suh had one amazing game (that may be why the media’s paying attention to him), but because he did the work of an entire defensive line by himself over the course of the whole season. (Seriously. Check out this comparison.)

Ingram's not even the best player on his own TEAM.
Terrence Cody, Rolando McClain, Julio Jones. Those three might be better. Ingram is good, no doubt, but he’s getting the benefit of being the starting RB on a great team. Based on that, Ingram should not win the Heisman.
Now on to Colt McCoy.
McCoy vs. Texas Tech: 24/34, 203, 1 TD, 2 INT.
McCoy vs. Oklahoma: 21/39, 127, 1 TD, 1 INT.
McCoy vs. Oklahoma St: 16/21, 171, 1 TD, 0 INT.
McCoy vs. Nebraska: 20/36, 184, 0 TD, 3 INT.
If it wasn’t for Jordan Shipley, what would McCoy have done this season?
My top three would be Suh, Gerhart and Spiller, with Suh getting my vote. I want Suh to win, if for nothing else than to see a defensive lineman win the award.

Matt,
Suh’s stats went beyond merely “good.” The guys at the Cornhusker blog “Double Extra Point” copied the following comparison from a Husker message board. Suh’s stat’s were transcendent.
Alabama D-Line
98 Tkl, 23.5 TFL, 9.5 Sk, 20 QBH, 5 PBU, 0 Int, 1 FF, 3 Blk
Florida D-Line
112 Tkl, 33 TFL, 14 Sk, 48 QBH, 5 PBU, 0 Int, 1 FF, 0 Blk
Texas D-Line
116 Tkl, 25.5 TFL, 15.5 Sk, 10 QBH, 7 PBU, 0 Int, 2 FF, 0 Blk
Ndamukong Suh
82 Tkl, 23 TFL, 12 Sk, 24 QBH, 10 PBU, 1 Int, 1 FF, 3 Blk

I think those stats speak for themselves. Suh should win the Heisman.

You just sold me
I had voted for Gerhart, and he’s still pretty impressive, but, I wanna switch to Suh.
