Brian Kelly Hate
This was Brian Kelly on Saturday after beating Pitt.
"I’m not going to talk about any job situations," Kelly said. "I’m going to enjoy this victory. If anybody else wants to ask a question, here’s the response you’ll get: Let’s talk about back-to-back championship teams and these kids. That’s the focus. It’s going to be on these kids.
"I’m not going to get into any of that. I think we’ve all learned one thing in the last couple of weeks. There is more misinformation out there and you folks need to get a handle on it because it’s ridiculous."
Yup. Blame the press coach for making things up. They're all idiots. Why would you lie to your players?
ESPN.com also reported that UC players Mardy Gilyard and Aaron Webster said Kelly told the players Thursday that he was not going to Notre Dame.
See? All about Cincinnati football.
Brian Kelly didn’t interview Tuesday in New York to become Notre Dame’s next football coach. But then, Kelly already may have known enough about the job to take it. Kelly had a meeting last week about the opening with representatives of Notre Dame before Cincinnati’s Big East championship game against Pittsburgh, the Tribune has learned. Talks progressed well enough that the official announcement Kelly will be Charlie Weis’ replacement could come as early as Friday — any time after Cincinnati’s football banquet Thursday night. – Chicago Tribune
And now here we are, 5 days later...
Brian Kelly, who has coached Cincinnati's football team to a 12-0 record this season and a berth in the Sugar Bowl, will be the new coach at Notre Dame, two sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen
If he didn't want to address the Notre Dame situation before the Pitt game, I could understand that. The focus of his team should have been on that game, and I don't blame him for wanting to keep things mum. But to attack the press the way he did, and to suggest that they were all liars who were making stuff up, only to take the job less than a week later just makes him look like a total hypocrite/doucher.
All he wanted to do was get a sound byte for Sportscenter on Saturday. Well I've got news for him. That s*** ain't gonna fly at Notre Dame. If he thinks he can just talk down to the press, he could die a much quicker death than Chalrie did if he doesn't succeed.
I already hate the man, and can't wait to watch him fail.

Ouch Fugi that is harsh...I totally see the point you make though. It seems a little DickRodish to me.
I hope Kelly does well at Notre Dame, being a Catholic myself I don’t mind much when they win, as long as it isn’t against the Lions.

I'm Catholic Too
And I by no means hate Notre Dame (though they do a lot of stuff that ticks me off). I hated Weis though, and Kelly hasn’t gotten off on a good foot with me at all. He could have stopped his quotes on Saturday at the first statement, but to go after the press like he did when all they were doing was asking legitimate questions about things that had undoubtedly already happened was, to use his words, ridiculous.

Agreed
I am an Irish Catholic (not practicing, but whatever) as well and I by no means like Notre Dame. I have never liked them and never understood their appeal. I worked at an Irish pub and restaurant throughout high school and during breaks from Penn State and EVERYBODY there loved ND (aside from the owners who were all PSU grads). Believe me, these people have absolutely no affiliation whatsoever with Notre Dame, yet seemingly bleed blue and gold (or whatever the hell colors they use). I just don’t get this. I hope that they continue their fall into irrelevance.

Completley unrelated
I went to a Jesuit school. They were big time BC fans. It was amusing to see the Priests bust the ND alumni that the real catholic college won when BC beat the Irish,

i read in a doc sat post
that he has already basically packed up and left. half the players were saying basically, “if he doesn’t want to be here then he can get the hell out…hope the door hits him on the a**…etc.”
it was never explicitly stated, but this is pretty indicative of what will eventually be confirmed.

I don't think Saban told the truth about interviewing for jobs (at any level)
AND he could have cared less about our 2004 CapOne Bowl v Iowa (who we should have beat like a drum) since he was already in Miami mentally.
Being able to coach doesn’t give you integrity.
I don’t bash Saban because I have a lot of respect for him as a coach and I didn’t really have too big of an issue when he left BR, I didn’t like the way he handled it but I lost some respect for him the way he repeated it (to a worse degree) leaving Miami then he took credit for Les Miles success at LSU, which really ticked me off.
Anyway, he’s not even close to Miles in that department, IMHO.

I think their snare had a busted head
Or their sticks broke. I believe a life size picture of “The Catch” may still be on the wall(s) outside the Iowa Football offices.
Holloway was a 5th year senior known for being hard-working and never complaining about his PT, with a quote along the lines “giving 110% doesn’t make you special, its was you are supposed to do as a Hawkeye” in one of the stories about him/the team that year.
That was literally the last play of the last game of his college career and he caught his only career TD pass… the look on the faces of the LSU players and staff in the background on the sidelines – priceless.
Like Rob Houghtlin and Murray last year (not to bring up a sore point with you guys), Stanzi and McNutt this year, Warren will never have to pay for a beer in Iowa again. Tate might’ve been a better QB in his last two years after that but he got to be a bit of a head case…

I don't mean to disrespect Iowa
My point is that we played flat that whole game/year.
Saban gets all this credit as a savior/hero/infallible coach but in 2004, the year after our championship he dogged it and that team was A LOT more talented than the results.
We would have been better off had he just gone ahead and left for Miami instead of feigning an effort to coach the CapOne, because he did no such thing.

This late in the game, and with Fat Charlie probably taking a lackluster effort on this year’s recruiting as he saw the writing on the wall, it seems tough to pull off a good class, even if you have TD Jesus. That’s why I think next year is going to be a brutal wake up call for Kelly.

what do you want him to say in those interviews? Most of these coaches have families and obligations other than football. He took a more prestigious, better paying job and waited until it was set it stone to say a word about it. I guess I feel a little sorry for the players, but these are the same kids that treat the recruiting process like a game and jump to the NFL as soon as possible. Loyalty isn’t common on either side. Is it just me, or does anyone else feel thus is a terrible hire for ND?
At Cinci many of Kelly’s best players were transfers (which I don’t thing ND allows) or kids that wouldn’t academically qualify at ND. Unless he believes he can automatically get better players just because he is the ND coach I don’t see how he’s gonna get the talent in there.
P.S. Remember a few years ago when South Florida was undefeated late in the season and ranked #2, Urban Meyer I believe bashed Levit by saying none of USF’s good players could get into UF?

I think he can automatically get better players because he is the ND head coach.
I’m not saying he’ll automatically get the best players, but there is a definite advantage to recruiting at ND than at Cinci.

ND's problem hasn't been getting good players, it has been the coaching, flat out.
Fat Charlie was bringing in top flight talent every year, he just sucked at his main job; coaching.
The myth that they aren’t able to recruit on par with other school due to their “elite” entrance qualifications is baloney. They get top ten classes every year, they just need someone who knows how to use said talent.

by Roland86 on Dec 11, 2009 2:01 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
See, I disagree that "all they need is coaching". There's more to it than that.
Part of ND’s problem is that the entire map of college football has changed in the last 20 or so years.
For one, the entire country’s population has grown a ton, and much of that growth is in Southern and Western states… so there are more good football players at relatively equal levels of talent available to everyone.
You combine that with the scholarship limits… no one can stockpile all the talent anymore, and with many schools that were ‘second tier’ before the limits upgrading their facilities, you don’t necessarily have to go to ND anymore to get national exposure.
It also hurts ND a lot to be an independent and not a part of a conference. If the BCS doesn’t melt down, there’s a much greater chance of getting in a good bowl if you are a member of a conference with a good W record in a given year for your team. Like us – Iowa didn’t get an automatic BCS bid but we got one of the open slots. I believe that either we or PSU would have STILL gotten that open slot over a 10-2 Notre Dame. The BCS basically has no incentive to take an equal at large team when they can grab a team from a conference that will put more asses in the seats than Notre Dame will.
The smart thing for the Domers to do would be to join the Big East, where they would be competitive. You guys saw the handwriting on the wall a long time ago and joined the Big 10. I know some of you have been grumbling about being a member of 10.1, but I think you actually have a better record and better classes than you would have if you’d stayed independent – Joe Pa or not.
I don’t see in the long-run the TV contracts keeping Notre Dame’s ass afloat. Why put them on your schedule when you can pay 200K to hammer a Northwest Southeast Regional Teacher’s College in your own crib?
Just some food for thought.
Go kick ass and take names in your bowl game, and looking forward to our next matchup!

No way any Big Ten school get's in...
if they have the same record as ND. Michigan or maybe OSU have a slight chance…possibly if they happen to have a head to head win. But in 99% of cases ND gets in over a Big Ten team with the same record. ND would also most likely be ahead of them in most polls!

Why would any coach want to spend time talking about himself, when his team just played an incredible game to win the big east and clinch a bcs bowl?

You missed my point completely
He earned the right to get out of the hell-hole that is Cincinnati. I don’t think anyone here blames him for leaving.
What we (or I, I don’t know) have a problem with is how he treated everyone on the way out.
He stood on a pulpit and told a group of reporters who simply did their jobs and reported the facts that they were idiots. He lied to his players. And he did it all in 5 days. He acted superior to everyone involved, and he can kiss my ass.

Did he lie to his players is my question? Is there proof of that? If there is, then I agree, just another chump. But if there is no proof of that, and a few kids are just ticked because he is leaving, then they need to get over it. Because if someone confirmed to them that they would be a top 10 draft pick, they would leave school in a heartbeat.

whoa, whoa, whoa....
….slow your roll Fugi. I lived in Cincy for 5 years…love that town….great sports city, good looking women, the whole bit.
I don’t know if you’ve spent a lot of time in Cincinnati, but it’s a pretty cool city, not a hell-hole. So they had a little race riot problem a few years back, who hasn’t?
Now maybe you were talking about UC football compared to ND, where yes, I would agree with you. Bearcat football is a “hell-hole” (I guess) comared to ND or PSU or Michigan or U$C…you get my point.

"Hell-hole" refered to to program
Not the city. I quite enjoyed the town while I was there.

Agree that Cincinnati is a hellhole
But Kelly could’ve handled his exit with more class. I wish some of these coaches would just be honest and say “look, I enjoy my job here and I don’t anticipate leaving any time soon, but you should never say to never to an interesting opportunity.”
Ferentz has used this gambit very successfully to squeeze more money out of us, and hey, he’s producing like a high-priced hooker, so we gladly hand the cash over.

Recruiting or not,
I personally think it’s ND that shows the total lack of class by going after him before their Bowl Game. Do you want a coach that is going to connect/motivate you players? Do you want a coach that shows integrity and can speak freely and openly to the press?(rheorical, I know . . . ND probably doesn’t give a damn about any of those things)
But if the answer is “yes”, then don’t put the guy into that position in the first place. How does sending an exposed liar on the recruiting trail immediately an advantage over sending somene that you allowed to see things through with his undefeated confernce champion team 4 or 5 weeks from now? At least then you (team and coach) can say they delayed negotiations because they wanted to put the (Cincy) players first. That would be something that I would respect a helluva lot more if I were a potential recruit than a visit from someone that ditched his team to go greener pastures/fatter contract.

well, difference between 1 month and 2 months is pretty substantial
especially in the recruiting world where things are usually decided well before the national LOI day. Not saying it is right, but I can see why ND would do it.

I'd totally disagree on ND class, as much as I hate the university
ND is only looking out for itself, it could care less about whatever commitments the employees it’s going after have made. Douchy, yes, but the only classless person in this scenario is Kelly for actually dumping his team on the eve of playing in a BCS game against a top ranked opponent. Recruiting be damned, if Kelly gave two sh*ts about Cincy and the athletes he’s coached, he would have told ND to wait until after the bowl season, and then he would sign on for sure if ND really wanted him there. But that’s not what happened, he saw dollar signs and prestige and he bolted, just like DickRod.

That's if ND decided to wait around
in such an important time in the recruiting season, I don’t know if ND would have taken that chance. And even if they did wait, the rumor mills still would have been churning, and it would have been leaked that Kelly is the guy they want for the job, and that’s all he’d be asked at his press conferences, and it would still undermine the team, since the players would all probably assume he was leaving anyway, and so either it would be a distraction, and/or it would just prolong the lying.
