Need Help Finding Video of PSU's Greatest Bowl Catch
Can anyone find the video of this catch?
The last time PSU played LSU, the game was low-scoring, and was broken open when either Chuck Herd or Gary Hayman, I can't remember whic, made a spectacular full-running, no break-in-stride, one-handed grab of a long scoring pass across the middle of the field.
To this day,I believe it to be the best catch in a bowl by PSU.
Can anyone find a link to this catch?
I'd like to know what the youngsters think about this, compared to, say Garrity's grab against Georgia.
Glad to be playing an SEC foe.
For the Glory,
Joe From Boalsburg

Sorry, no Chuck Herd
But… there was one a show on ESPNClassic called “Cheap Seats”. Supposed to be a sports version of" Mystery Science Theater 3000" And apparently, they once “riffed” the 1989 Holiday Bowl. Not as funny as MST, but at least there’s video of it around.
Dave Daniels for the win.

Which was a shame
because I actually enjoy their standup, but they just couldn’t put anything together when trying to riff on World’s Strongest Man competitions.

This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
that show didn't succeed?
Surprising.

It was terrible
I remember watching about two or three episodes. This was the only one I watched entirely, simply because it’s a PSU game.

With no shame...
I admit I just watched all three parts of that Holiday Bowl episode.
“Gonna be a man in motion” was definitely the funniest part to me. 1:29 of Rambler’s link.

I remember that one!
I thought Daniels was out of bounds, landing on the line with his back, first contact.

I tend to disagree
4th and 3 and Morelli throws up a prayer down by 14 to the Aggies. Butler beats the man-to-man coverage and lays out and catches the thing with his fingertips and controls the ball all the way through the landing and holds it up immediately. TD.
I just went back and rewatched it — I’ve never see the catch you’re talking about but this one was ridonkulous.

just b/c I have the game saved on my HD

Now c’mon, that’s a catch.

The best part about that fatty crying was that there was still a ton of time left in the game for him to waddle back out onto the field and make a difference. Instead of supporting his team mates and focusing on the game he threw a full-blown 4-year-old-in-a-grocery-store-and-mommy-won’t-by-me-that-toy temper tantrum. HA!

Orange Bowl
Ethan Kilmer’s TD catch right before the half against the Seminoles was a great one, too. He didn’t lay out for it, but it was still a ridiculous catch that changed the momentum of that game.
yeah, I don't know about a lot of the older bowls
but from late 90s on, I’d say Kilmer’s was the best

couldn't agree more
mostly because it was so unexpected from E K, when MRob put that ball up i expected to see Butler or Golden down there and Kilmer went go-go gadget around the defender
Because it's a Bowl Game!!

Butler’s and Kilmer’s catches were AWESOME. Daniels’ was freaky-lucky-awesome. The LSU-PSU Gator Bowl is the first PSU game I remember watching (I was 4 years old), and I don’t recall the Herd/Hayman catch. But Garrity’s catch was the best, IMHO, because 1) it was totally unexpected and basically against our nature, and 2) it sealed the deal for a NATIONAL FREAKING CHAMPIONSHIP, that we have been screwed out of far too many times. If you have 5 special catches, but 1 seals a MNC, well, there’s your winner. I’d love to see vid of the Herd/Hayman catch, though.
I agree, the meaning of the catch to the program is the most important aspect — no one talks about a great catch against Indiana or Akron if if the guy one handed it and backflipped into the endzone.
Garrity is definitely #1

Like Norwood's TD catch against Buffalo a couple seasons ago.
Caught it one handed (from above the ball, he basically grabbed it on top) while falling on his arse into the endzone, one of the best catches I’ve ever seen, man that dude had some great hands.

No way
Best catch of all: Blackledge to Garrity, back left corner in the ’83 Sugar Bowl.
That one gave us the National Championship.
When your catch makes the cover of SI, that’s Penn State’s greatest bowl catch, bar none
Remembers watching that cacth.
I have to agree, Greatest PSU catch in a bowl game. I also like the interception CATCH in the Fiesta Bowl against Miami. I really like the fact that both were against Heisman Trophy winners!
Isn’t it great how over the years when PSU has had to play Heisman Trophy winners, the defense has been able to almost silence them. (Not just in bowl games)

Was thinking about this b/c we haven't faired well lately...
So I went back (to 1975) and got the game results for the Heisman winners in the year they won the award…(Not sure if I missed any)
2006: Smith – L, 28-6
1997: Woodson – L, 34-8
1995: George – L, 28-25
1992: Torretta – L, 17-14
1987: Brown – W, 21-20
1986: Testaverde – W, 14-10
1983: Rozier – L, 44-6
1982: Walker – W, 27-23
1976: Dorsett – L, 24-7
1975: Griffen – L, 17-9
Now I’m not sure how the winners actually performed. Also, this doesn’t include other occurences where we played Heisman winners in non-winning years (i.e. Dayne, Palmer, etc.).

You missed the best of all (outside of Vinny):
1982 Fiesta Bowl, when Curt Warner greatly outplayed Marcus Allen.

1984 Flutie W 37-30
We were 3-1 against Flutie even though he always had a great game, and beat him in his Heisman year

DORSETT?? pronounced DOR-set not dor-SET before he went cowboy?
1975 – WIN
1974-WIN
1973-WIN
Still remember Mike Hartenstine crushing DORset in the open field for a 5 yard loss his freshman year after JOEPA had the field with 5 inch grass, and was watering the field two hours before the game after three days of rain!

Not quite back left.
But back and left enough.
JUST AS I SUSPECTED
Garrity’s catch was great, we were seated directly above him in the second tier, front row, at that game. Went hoarse for a week after the fourth replay at the Dome.
But the LSU catch was a thing of beauty. No break in stride at full speed, one-hand..

a guy who posts (or used to post) on FOS...
had like every game imaginable archived and could sell you a copy, possibly.
I forget his handle, but he posted at pennstate.scout.com.
I stopped posting there because there was too much bitching.

Bought the 2008 PSU-OSU game, as I was in the ‘Shoe and didn’t get to see it on tv.
Really good production value. Well worth it.

you may want to consider tenyardtorrents
for any recent games (I think the games stay up for a year). Can download the games and burn them to DVD if you are so inclined.
