Since this thinger doesn't get underway for three hours,

this would be a nice place to have a volleyball open thread

We’re starting our 100th right now against Cal on ESPNU.

THIS

I was going to threadjack this and talk about vball.

"Have I ever told the story of when I met Miley Cyrus?"

by Jeff Junstrom on Dec 12, 2009 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

This b-ball game should be great.

Don’t know how the team will respond. I don’t want to see a complete FAIL job, because at this point in the season, the “we’re still looking for an identity” excuse starts to wear a little thin.

Even if we don’t win, hopefully we can be competitive and show improvement.

D'errico just went nuts

with 5 great serves (and still serving after a Cal time out) in a row, 3 of which Cal couldn’t get into play, and 1 which they returned over the next for Blair Brown to smack down for a kill.

by PSUisMyHeart on Dec 12, 2009 4:13 PM EST reply actions

Did you see that Brown kill?

That's why I love Blair Brown.

She does it all. Take that how you will.

Megan Hodge on the slide!

The most exciting spike for a player, IMO.

Not to threadjack further but

How bout our Lady Lion Hoopsters getting the day off right with an upset of #15 Pitt.

Now time for the everyone else to keep the winning going.

by LegalLion on Dec 12, 2009 4:19 PM EST reply actions

Baller.

How do they look this year? Anytime Pitt gets beat is OK by me.

On a related note, I was talking to a friend last night and telling them how I went to PSU and then Pitt grad school. He asked if I rooted for Pitt. Rookie.

Are you sure you don't have ESPNU?

I think it’s now part of the Comcast Basic package, which I have. Honestly, this is the first time I’ve turned the channel on.

I have never seen any women's vball.

I turn it on and they go on a 1-3 run. I don’t think I’m good luck.

Patience my friend.

Ari Wilson just crushed two blocks, so all is good.

Both.

I'm sorry, I lied.

I had to look it up. I assumed it was both, but alas I was wrong.

in order to receive a block solo or block assist, the block must end play

lol kk,

I guess it makes more sense, but I wanted it to be the other way around, because then we would have gotten 3 blocks 3 plays in a row, instead of 2

The best I could find online.
in international play men average in the low-mid 60s (mph). some can serve upwards of 80 mph though

What some people don’t realize is that it’s not always the speed that makes it so tough. When you see a serve that the server hits with an open palm, it’s a knuckleball that is very hard to return.

I would really look into getting that copy righted or something, in the event that Maybin blows up in the NFL he’ll probably want to trademark that and if you have some legal rights to it you can get some of that fat cash (or at least a signature). How many lawyers do we have on this site, someone tell me if this is possible.

So an overrated Iowa team, maybe? They play out west, which, in women’s volleyball actually means something. But they still had 10 losses, so Pitt?

Jones is somehow worse.

Brooks and Jackson are solid enough as role players. But Jackson’s become the “other” scorer, which is bad. Babb actively hurts the team when he’s out there.

And their interior defense is just abysmal. That’s really their biggest problem.

recap for you

We didn’t care about rules. We were inner city kids (I laughed a bit at the part where they claimed they gave these kids a “chance at an education”. I wonder what the graduation rates were and how many of them actually even went to class) and we were tough thugs (until confronted by real tough thugs in Club Manhattan).

We knew how to win. Everyone else just tried to win. We were better than everyone else, even when we lost. When we lost it was never because the other team beat us, it was always because we lost the game.

Then they showed all of the “good” Miami parts leading up to the 87 Fiesta Bowl but didn’t show the PSU counterpoints (and yes, I know this wasn’t a show about PSU, and was just about Miami, but half of what made it so ridiculous was the stark contrast between the 2 teams).

They showed the fallout with the university president about their conduct, and by “fallout” I mean their complete ignoral of the president who “is just like the rest of America and hates us”. They even showed the NCAA rules changes for unsportsmanlike conduct and how they laughed at the new rules and the fact that they were basically the prime reason for the new rules.

They also claimed to be the reason any racial tensions in Miami were quelled.

In summary: they overemphasized pretty much everything they did. If I did a show on them it would basically be 10 minutes long and just state that they were a bunch of thugs and prima donnas who overexagerate their importance on pretty much anything, but who were still good football players and won a bunch of MNCs.
