Come To Penn State, Basketball Edition: 2011 C Peter Alexis

Whoo_siren_medium

Give me a super tall dude from Wilkes-Barre and a wooooo!

As dutifully noted in Fanposts, Ed DeChellis finally reeled in what we can all safely consider a big guy.  Peter Alexis, a 6'11" center from Holy Redeemer*, has a rating of 91 from Scouts Inc.  Other than that, not a hell of a lot in the way of additional information.  He's certainly the most recruited player out of the Wyoming Valley Conference in decades.  Short video clip here.

Is this kid 52?

Looked like the only kid that could be anywhere near 6’11"?

91 rating?

I am so dependent on the star rating that I have no idea what that means.

by PSUinBOSSton on Dec 14, 2009 9:33 AM EST reply actions

It means

he is better than a player ranked 90 but not as good as a player rated 92

Is that out of 100?

Or is that out of 1000? I’m not used to these highly ranked bball recruits, so naturally I’m going with 1000.

I'll help

By 2014, Calipari will have left UK

That would be a dream hire for us!

Probably not

And he would go from a job with zero pressure to the equivalent of Notre Dame Head Football Coach.

Not to be a downer..

but is it bad that he isn’t in Scout/Rivals database?

by flynnpsu on Dec 14, 2009 9:55 AM EST reply actions

Eh

To be honest, there a metric butt-ton of bball players out there, and he’s a 2011 kid, so it’s possible that not a lot of people have heard of him. Especially in the early goings, getting tape to Scout/Rivals and going to their camps. Also, ESPN’s bball recruiting is considered pretty good (much better than their football recruiting). Personally I’m not worried, PSU’s recruiting classes aren’t going to look crazy awesome on paper anyway. We as fans a used to looking at the football recruiting and it jades us a bit.

Personally I’m not worried, PSU’s recruiting classes aren’t going to look crazy awesome on paper anyway.

He’s obviously not going to be a can’t miss stud — we aren’t Duke or Kentucky, after all — but a big guy who can play a little is something we have had trouble getting on our team. Hopefully, he can be a bit more of an offensive force than Ott is.

by Laaaaazzz on Dec 14, 2009 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

If he can average 8 rebounds and 14 points over his career I’ll be thrilled.

by BSD on Dec 14, 2009 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

No

Basketball recruiting doesn’t get nearly the attention football recruiting does. Unless a kid is ranked in the top 100 you probably won’t be able to find much on him.

by BSD on Dec 14, 2009 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks, sounds like a great pickup.

I’m originally from the W-B area and I’ve witnessed 6’3 centers dominate the WVC, so I was a little worried.

by flynnpsu on Dec 14, 2009 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

WVC Hoops

Remember Dave Popson in the 80’s who played for Bishop O’Reilly? He used to break the heart of my Patriots in the battle for the league title and dominated as a center. Unfortunately, he didn’t do too much at UNC-Chapel Hill.

When we were recruiting Terrell Pryor we always hoped he'd help us take down Ohio State... and he did!

by gradiology on Dec 14, 2009 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

i'm also a Patriot

I believe Tim Crossin (O’Reily) lead the to a state championship and ended up going to Towson.

Then Townson played Syracuse (with Gerry McNamara from Scranton) at the Wachovia Arena in W-B and it put NEPA in a frenzy.

I believe Alexis’ sister was in the WNBA for a second.

Um...... why?

In their ability, or recruiting interest, or…..?

I ask, as obviously Sura was a 6’ guard who really blossomed late in his college career.

by Tailgate Shogun on Dec 14, 2009 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

I think forma recruiting or hype perspective

PETER ALEXIS. The 6-foot-11 junior from Holy Redeemer will most likely become the most-highly recruited player from the WVC since Bishop O’Reilly center Dave Popson in the mid-1980s. And before anymore brings up Bob Sura — who played at Florida State — remember, the former GAR great wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school. You won’t be able to say the same thing about Alexis.

by psu in the w-b on Dec 14, 2009 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

Makes sense, thanks!

I played against Sura in some summer leagues. He was great, but I was shocked to see how he developed his game and made a long career in the NBA. Amazing.

by Tailgate Shogun on Dec 14, 2009 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Well

Basketball is much different, and much more flawed. As Mike alluded to, he’s from central PA, so he is not in the “hotbeds”, so he doesn’t get on the AAU teams, which is where the scouting begins. If you don’t play top level AAU, you don’t get the high ratings.

by STU Boy on Dec 14, 2009 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

Correction...

NEPA.

When we were recruiting Terrell Pryor we always hoped he'd help us take down Ohio State... and he did!

by gradiology on Dec 14, 2009 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

I posted this in the fanpost

but according to the rivals article, Peter is interested in Penn State for our engineering program. That alone makes me a fan of this get. I would love to have a center on my team who dunks just to test the structural integrity of the rim and backboard system.

This is just my own observation

based on a really great basketball player that played at my high school (and is now has a schollie and is playing college bball at the University of Richmond), but avg 18+ pts when you’re easily 5-8+ inches taller than everyone else on your and the opposing team seems to be pretty easy to do, so IMO it’s not that impressive of a stat, but again I’ve never seen the kid play so I don’t know.

*School formerly known as Bishop Hoban?

Umm…Bishop Hoban and Bishop O’Reilly were combined to form Redeemer even if it is housed in the former home of the Argents. I still can’t believe they combined the two schools..bad move by the diocese of Scranton.

I haven’t been in touch with a lot of the happenings back there. I know Bishop Hafey in Hazleton was also closed.

Seton Catholic was also involved...

It actually was quite a sad move to go from 4 Catholic High Schools to one. Also, Hafey was in Hazleton, i’m not sure how many students they thought were travelling the 30 miles from Hazleton to Redeemer. If they were going to close Hafey, fine but they should have left O’Reilly and Hoban open. That said…the Bishop was a jerk about it and alienated a lot of Catholics.

Even funnier than the change in his ratings...

Is the fact that his description changed dramatically. He WAS a dominant player who could block anybody, now he is a big guy without much athleticism and who can’t play defense.

WVC Hoops

WVC hoops is down in recent years. This kid is good and has a lot of upside but he can’t stop anything that is over 6’ 5" and athletic. Paris Cleveland on Hazleton can work him going to the hoop. I am thinking another Andrew Ott.

RUTS…Don’t for get the Redeemer is like 4 catholic schools in one. It is even Hafey and O’reilly.

BTW, Hazleton went to Florida for a pre-season tourney and went 1-1. The loss came on a last min shot. They also will be playing St. Alban’s from DC at the Mohegan Sun Arena in WB. Not sure when they started playing so many out of state teams or how good the out of state teams are.

by LocustLane on Dec 15, 2009 10:48 AM EST reply actions

This is the first year they're venturing to out of state tourneys

Their coach also put together the St. Albans game as a means to get better competition.

I think the Florida teams were solid, but St Albans should be a much better test.
