What he didn't say
is that Notre Dame has no interest in the Big Ten.
I say let's rock the Orange Bowl, because nobody will remember in five years anyway.
What we should do
Is have 3 B10 divisions:
East Division
PSU, MSU, Iowa, Illinois, NW, Wisco
West Division
OSU, UM, Min, Indiana, Purdue,
Independent Douchbag Division
Notre Dame
That way they can keep their independent douchbag status AND get the benefits of a conference. EVERYONE WINS!!!

And if Notre Dame wins their division
They get an aoutomatic bid to the BCS right? I think millzners might actually have figured out a way to get Notre Dame to join the Big Ten.

"We like our independence"
“Until we suck for 5 more years and Comcast won’t pay us what we think we are worth because we were good back in the 1980’s and the only program on national TV every week.”
Swarbrick was also vague about firing Charles Weis too….
Big Ten Titles for everyone.

See, one could also read it as this:
“Our strong preference is to remain…independent, however our stronger preference is to make more money, and if joining the Big 10 will do that for us, then CA-CHING!”

The guy said nothing.
I don’t even think the ‘no’ was his, just a summary by the ‘writer’.
Sounds like it could go either way right now.
I think Mizzou is itchin’ to belong.

Their fans sure as hell aren't
I was reading over on the Mizzou blog. One of them was saying he would be sick to his stomach if they joined the Big Ten.

Can you blame him?
The Big Ten is slow and doesn’t play offense.

if mizzou had been in the big10 when chase daniels played for them
would he have ever even gone there (keep in mind daniels was from TX)
We decide when you hear the snap count...
Might be a stretch here....
but anyone think that with this whole Comcast buying NBC deal, they will not renew the TV contract with ND or try to renegotiate it at a much lower rate? We will see how much Swarbrick likes his independence then..
by RudyWasOffsides on Dec 17, 2009 12:28 PM EST reply actions
there are going to be a lot of changes at NBC when comcast takes over
i wouldn’t be surprised if in 5 years, when the current ND-NBC contract runs out, NBC looks nothing like it does now, and comcast only offers ND a contract to be broadcast on some comcast cable sports channel.
We decide when you hear the snap count...
i thought it was up in 2010? I’d be cool if they put ND on Versus
by RudyWasOffsides on Dec 17, 2009 12:42 PM EST up reply actions
Rumor is that the current NBC/Notre Dame contract allows NBC to move a certain number of games onto cable if NBC wishes. So, the thinking is that when Comcast takes over, they can and will start putting a few ND games on Versus from the start.
also
if you remember this year, ND played at the alamodome (or was it the new cowboys stadium?) well they’re going to start doing that every year, but rotating it to different stadiums. i don’t know what this adds to the argument, but i thought i’d mention it.
We decide when you hear the snap count...
You're so right
NBC as we know it today will be a relic in 2015.

Even though I thought ND was the best and most likely option for joining
I’m totally fine with this. I can’t wait for them to crawl begging to join a conference after they suck again for a few more years, and see that smug look wiped clean off their faces, and by then we’ll likely already have a new team.
"Totally fine with this"?
Fine with what? Fine with Swarbrick not denying the chance of ND joining the Big Ten?
This is like Paterno making ambiguous comments about Kevin Newsome.

Am I the only person concerned
that in six months we will be told why we should be excited about Miami of Ohio joining the big ten? I am using “Miami of Ohio” as a pronoun here, meaning someone along those lines.
I would actually like Maryland
and would be somewhat excited about them joining. At least much more excited than any MAC or numerous Big East teams.
by The JuggerNitt on Dec 17, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions
I don't know if you're the only person concerned
But if you are, I hope there’s not many of you, quite frankly.
We’re looking for a Notre Dame or a large state research school with good history and a solid fanbase. We won’t be settling for the MAC.

Agreed.
We all know this is about money, for the most part, so would there actually be an advantage to pick up a MAC school? I doubt it.
by smashtheguitar on Dec 17, 2009 1:21 PM EST up reply actions
Buffalo
offers the greatest advantage of all the MAC schools; AAU member, it’s the biggest MAC school in fair sized market just outside the Big Ten footprint. Team and traditions are young, but growing.
It would would still be a project to bring them up to Big Ten levels, though.
Miami (OH) has a solid ice hockey team
…..yeah, that’s all I got for this one….
"In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
Big Ben came from there
so occasionally you can get something football related good from there.
"They say in Happy Valley that if God wasn’t a Penn State fan, why is the sky blue and white?" Fortt said. "Who am I to argue with God?"
I'm not trying to be a smartass
But I’m sure that could be said of a lot of small schools who have one player who PWNS in the pros.
No way
The Big Ten isn’t expanding with a small MAC school just for the sake of expanding for a championship game. They’re going to want a school with high enough revenues to make this thing worthwhile.

This is good...
…if the Big Ten is considered slow, then Notre Dame is considered glacial!
WE ARE.......PENN STATE!
Rutgers
To not take advantage of the NYC metro market is insane for the Big10. NJ/NY have a ton of great high school players, adding RU would let younger kids in the area watch more Big 10 football and actually care about who is playing.
Why add Pitt? That market is already dominated by PSU, it does not make sense. Add Rutgers and you will own the mid west through NYC.
Make it a east / west or Land / Lakes conference.
HAHS circa 93' "Football is 1/2 Offense, 1/2 Defense, and 1/2 Special teams".
I am not a fan of Iowa getting an auto-bid to the championship game every year
being the sole member of the Land division

The question becomes
What if both ND and Rutgers want to join, who’s the 3rd team to make the ZOMG BIG 14?

Cuse or Pitt

Meh on Rutgers
If the NYC market was so great for college football then why has Rutgers been such a loser program for decades? From an athletic competition standpoint Rutgers offers nothing to the table in football or basketball. Despite being in the NYC market they don’t bring in high revenues you would think they would.
by catesinator on Dec 18, 2009 10:47 AM EST up reply actions
I see what you are saying on Rutgers
But what other program besides ND is really getting you fired up?
Pitt – Decent FB / B ball but PSU gains nothing in letting them play in a real conference, if anything it will hurt recruiting. When you compare the Big 10 and Big east…where would you rather play?
WV – No thanks
Cuse – Maybe 30 years ago except in B Ball.
Mizzu – Better than Cuse I guess??
UMD – Sure but they are an ACC team with tradition in B Ball, people in the DC metro love playing Duke/NC
Not saying Rutgers is an anwesome school, but it would be a good fit IMO. They are better in FB compared to IU , Ill , NW (most years) , and MSU.
HAHS circa 93' "Football is 1/2 Offense, 1/2 Defense, and 1/2 Special teams".
chicken and egg
NYC is disinterested in football because there aren’t really any good local teams. When Rutgers has done well, they’ve had the fans, and NYC support. Of course, if they join the Big 10, I imagine they won’t do well, and thus won’t really have the support.
Does Chicago really show much support for NW or even Illinois, though? Most of that market is from other schools’ alumni in the area. NYC could be the same way.

One more reason against ND in the Big 10
Indiana sucks as a state. Do we really want to give them 1/4 of Big 10 teams?
As is...
IU gives us representation among southern Indiana KKK white power “We need to recruit more Damon Bailey type players” Hoosiers, while Purdue gives us representation among the blue collar “STEEL MILLS AND TRAINS THIS IS OURRRRR COUNTRYYYYY” Hoosiers. We just need Notre Dame to finish it out.

Here's what I am worried about
Having ND be in our conference will inevitably mean that at some future date we will HAVE to root for them against another team because of their affiliation. I enjoy nothing more than seeing ND fail with one cocky, overpaid coach after the next. I worry that I will have no choice than to root for them at some point! NO!
http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/christ_turns_down_3_year
see that's your problem
I don’t root for B10 teams. I root against Ohio State every game they play in. Same with Michigan. Nothing would make me happier then the B10 go go 1-6 in their bowl games this year with Penn State being the only team winning. Well ok, I like NW a little so it’d be ok if they win.

i'll be rooting for you as well
like i’ve said before, if we could get to a point where the conf. championship started to consistently come down to PSU and Iowa, I would feel less bad about not winning it…anything that keeps scUM and jaOSU away, i’m happy.
although, it’d be nice if we could start winning a couple against you guys…that would be grrreeeaaaattttttt yeeeaaaahhhh

And I agree. I can see both our teams taking the BXI a number of times over the next 10 years. In the mean time, let’s all hope for tO$U to start flaming out and DickRod to keep scUM mildly sedated.

If Hitler led his fighting Nazis against Notre Dame, I would reluctantly give ND the slight edge. But that’s about the only team I can dream up that I wouldn’t root for if ND was playing.

Except, y’know, for pretty much every sport except football, where you’ve been in the Big East for over a decade, Swarbrick.
I see that Notre Dame hate on this thread, and as an LSU fan I can only sadly shake my head

It doesn’t surprise me that southern fans aren’t as passionate about their dislike for Notre Dame — but I agree, when you crushed them it was absolutely wonderful.
I know ND gets a lot of positive remarks from announcers and sports media every season, but that year it was over the top. Announcers were relentless about their ambiguous and creepy affection for Brady Quinn.
