"Bobby has been a tough competitor. He has meant an awful lot to the universities he coached and to the game of football overall. He and his wife, Ann, have dedicated their lives with untold hours to better the teams and universities they cared so much about. They will be missed by the coaching profession and college football. Sue and I wish them well."

Joe's actual response

"We hugged as grown men do. It was a great moment. Then, it was business as usual." -- LJ Sr.
If this isn't trademark Joe, then I don't know what is
The guy is humble to no end, even when he is now pretty much in sole control of FBS/D1A wins for most likely eternity. I’m sure this statement is so humble because he was friends with Bowden (honestly if you can explain that friendship to me, I applaud you, because they seem like two completely conflicting football philosophies to me).
Friendship Explained
Nobody has ever said anything other than Bobby Bowden is a kind, generous, funny man. And there is more to life than football.
I say let's rock the Orange Bowl, because nobody will remember in five years anyway.
yeah...I can't think of a singler person who's ever said anything bad about the man

Yeah, what a tool.
“I can only account for what I know about him when I was recruiting him out of North Florida Christian High School and for the time he was on our football team at Florida State University,”
Bowden concluded by saying he hoped Gibson had learned his lesson in prison and had the support of a loving caring family.
“Thank you for reading my letter and may God direct you in your decision,”

All anyone can account for when they know someone before they commit a crime
is how they were before the commit the crime. Then they commit a crime. Usually people can account for that as well. If Daryll Clark went and shot, robbed, and raped someone, I have a suspicion that JoePa wouldn’t be writing any letters of support for him…but I guess I could be wrong.

and yes, I know about JoePa's comment
“if a pretty girl comes knocking at my hotel room” or whatever it was, and while it was a stupid comment to make, it also relates to a different situation that is much more shades of gray than breaking and entering, shooting, and raping.

I don’t really see that letter as one of support. I see it as one describing the person he knew.
To some people that’s just semantics. I see it as, at worst, misplaced loyalty.
It’s not like the kid would have got six life terms had Bobby not written the letter. Further, he had not been convicted at the time he wrote it, given that fact, his “support” is pretty tepid.
