OMG SEC in the 1970's!
So taking a read of this article about the last time we played LSU, I couldn't help but catch a JoePa comment that really sticks out in this day and age:
"What was I supposed to do, get reckless and lose the football game so people could say it was a thrilling game? That's crap," Paterno said. "How come defensive football is so great when a Southern team plays it and dull when an Eastern team plays it?"
Needless to say, it appears the bias has been around for quite some time. The other thing to take into account is what a top-tier SEC team said about Cappelletti after the defensive slopfest:
"He's better than anybody we've played," Capone [LSU's linebacker] said after the final splashdown. "Even tonight, you could tell, the way he hits people and they bounce off him. Several times he'd get hit and still make 3 or 4 or 5 yards."

Missoura’s governor wants to be in the Big Ten.

Yeah screw him
Mizzou is my favorite after ND, but if the government plays a role in getting them in, the entire state should stop paying taxes. They have no place in this kind of thing IMO.

As a Missouri resident.
I am in favor of a PSU conference game being played two hours from my house. I am more in favor, however, of not paying taxes.
I am really confused by your comment, fugi. Why exactly would it be wrong for the state government to get involved in the interests of its flagship state-funded university? I am not pushing this toward a political discussion at all…just want to make that clear. I just don’t see how it would not be something that the state government should be involved in since it involves a taxpayer backed investment (the university).

It's sports
That’s why.
Getting the government involved in anything in college sports, in my opinion, is a bad thing, even if it’s as big an issue as conference affiliation.

I don't think he mentioned, or implied, any government involvement.
He said he was an alumni and mentioned that the switch would be good academically, but I don’t think there was an implication of government involvement. I’m OK with this.

True
It just smells dirty to me, like anything government related.

If there's a hint like that in the public
there’s one in private, too, you can be sure.

Really?
It’s just sports? There’s no other connection between the schools, as in an academic consortium, which the Big Ten is?

no, genius
Missouri has nothing academic to gain from aligning itself from the Big Ten? Think, broseph, use your head.

Of course it does
But do you honestly believe that’s why Gov. Whoeverheis was motivated to comment on the situation?
I suppose you just think more highly of people than I do.

It's quite possible
If it means more TV revenue, and more exposure, of course, entry into the academic consortium of the conference. From an “on paper” evaluation, there’s nothing to lose by joining the Big Ten for the major institution of his state!

Damnit, here is the problem
This is a NIXON! If you thought that there were only Julie and Trish, think again. Jay was hidden from the public with the intent that he emerge only when we had let our guard down. He is mad with power-lust. This is sort of like the Boys from Brazil, only with Nixons.

After a second consecutive undefeated season, yes.
"Every player we have, someone-maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone-poured their soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

I also liked this
Paterno took a private poll of his players, who voted themselves No. 1
"For me the game wasn’t grounded in reality. It was about the uniform you put on that turned you into a warrior. It was about the mythology of the battle, the victory, the defeat, the struggle." - Mike Reid, PSU '69
I hope it was unanimous.

Actuallly
it was anonymous as U$C and O$U voted themselves co-champions or champions every year (see Mr. Tressel’s Neighborhood) regardless of record.
