Another Shameless Plug - Mike Leach; is B12 soft?
It was announced today that Texas Tech has suspended Head Coach Mike Leach—who has presided over arguable the best decade in Red Raider History—indefinitely, pending the outcome of an investigation of alleged mistreatment of one of his players.
The university is also looking into his ban of his player's use of Twitter and Facebook.
Additionally, he may have told his players that their lack of focus, in light of a loss to Texas A&M; was due to listening to their 'fat little girl friends.'
Therefore, on behalf of 'fat little girl friends' everywhere the Administration at Texas Tech is joining the B12 and the NCAA's push toward the conference being a more 'sensitive' league.

Before the "I tried it and it sucked" police show up...
I thought I’d drop two cents. I agree with the commenter in the article that said there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed, and that if you can discipline your team right without crossing that line AND be a successful program (see Penn State football; shameless plug of my own), then you’ve found a way to be a college football coach. What some of these guys (to be fair, Leach’s is the only story I’ve really followed more that cursorily) are doing is past that line, and they should be punished as such. My hat is off to the TT administration for having a set and stating as such. If only the NCAA ran that way, we’d actually see ends to the Reggie Bush/OJ Mayo/Joe McKnight/myriad other athletes’ investigations.
"Have I ever told the story of when I met Miley Cyrus?"
The NCAA
is only concerned about whether coaches or assistant types contact players too much, not the obvious U$C and F$U fiascos…do any of us out there really think these programs will be punished for blatantly breaking the rules ? As if “they” are going to sanction F$U and take away Bobby’s wins or punish U$C’s past trangressions…look at the O$U a few years back with Clarrett and Co. They are untouchable and with Miles Brand’s passing, these charges will also pass…it’s the old story of a PSU recruit from Florida back in the day not having proper clothing when he visited here in a snowstorm and Joe calling the NCAA to make sure that they could give him a sweatshirt…in other programs, they DON’T call and give them a car or condo…thank God for the last 60 years here.
I think this is a little
different than the typical NCAA crap and in typical fashion they’ll go after Leach because he hurt someone’s feelings.
but you are correct, PSU is fortunate to have had JoePa for such an incredible run.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
Well
I think the major issue here is the fact that Texas Tech has taken the position that it’s not okay for a coach to tell a kid to “man up” and play through a concussion. That’s good.
Every year, every, single, year, kids die and sustain life altering injuries playing football. Some of them are fluky, but many are not. Stupid shit like doing suicides in 100 degree heat without water, and pushing kids with concussions back on the field need to stop. This game is dangerous enough, that it doesn’t need to dump stupidity on top of the already substanital assumed risk.
As far as the “your fat girlfriends” comment. Paterno has said stupider things during press confrences. Who cares?

I think that is a gross misstatement Jesse.
While I’m sure Paterno has said things that may have been insulting, from what I’ve seen of his media conferences, if there’s insults going out, it’s subtle and towards someone in a position of responsibility. Either media members that have pissed him off, officials in the B10, Refs etc. I would be very, very surprised if Paterno ever took shots at his players relationships on a public forum.
What did he say when AJ Nickelson...
…got sent home from the Orange Bowl (by that titan of discipline Bobby Bowden) no less? Something to the effect of, “a girl shows up in your hotel room, whadda gonna do?” is my recollection.
Or what about when Tony Johnson got nailed for a DUI? Something to the effect of “it’s not a big deal”.
What Leach said was 1 not in public, and 2 not specifically directed at anybody. Unless I misread the article. Would you feel better if he just publicly chastised the team for “playing like babies”? Cause Paterno’s pulled that one too.

I could be mistaken, but
didn’t he have someone locked in a closet or something. Wasn’t it the son of espn’s Craig James.
I do understand these are accusations and an investigation is coming.
Locking someone in a closet is cruel and unusal punishment for any sport.
Settle it on the field!
Yeah...
It is Craig James’ kid, and he was told to stand in a shed, which according to Mandel, and his “sources with knowlege of the facilites”, is more like a garage. Apparently, the doctor who examined said that [a] the kid was never in any danger, and was actually better off in the garage than on the sideline.
So, I don’t think this was like a scene from Missing in Action II or anything.

Or Bridge on the River Kwai
I though the Chuck Norris aspect is what put Missing in Action over vis-a-vie the other two films for the refrence though.

it appears this will be another prime example where they will only report on what will draw attention. Once the truth comes out and it does not appears as bad as initially report, you will not here any more on the matter and everyone will remember the negative accusations.

But what about fraternity pledges?
Come on… they’ll eventually get over it.

Seriously, its hard to believe Leach is that big of an asshat…

"I don't think this was like a scene from Missing in Action II" is accurate
http://www.doubletnation.com/2009/12/29/1223515/the-saga-of-mike-leach-former
January said the shed in which James spent practice on Dec. 17 might have been the most appropriate place to deal with his concussion, because it kept him out of the sunlight. January said he and his teammates on the offensive line often retreated to the same shed during practices to rest and escape the heat.
“It’s not like it’s some dungeon,” he said.
And, for those that don’t know, the TTU AD has wanted Leach gone…

It's a crock.
He is being railroaded because Craig James can’t understand wh his little boy is not getting enough playing time so he can get him a highlight reel, news flash, he just aint that good, deal with it.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
I don't know that it's a "crock"
If he’s punishing players with concussions for not practicing, that’s a thing. I don’t care how silly or severe the punishment winds up being.
Beat LSU
The kid showed up at practice
sporting shades and smarted off to the coach that ‘he couldn’t practice because of his headache’ and he was sporting his shades ‘for light sensitivity’ (even though he had been cleared by a Dr.) so the coach had him go do his ‘training’ which consisted of walking around, in a ‘shed’ that is as big a two car garage.
On the other occasion he was sent into the opposing team air conditioned press room to ride an exercise bike.
Actually he was taking it very easy on the kid because of the supposed concussion not vice versa.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!
And the lawyers will sort this out
If what your saying is accurate, than it’s totally BS.
What I’m concerned about, and what may or may not have happened in this instance, is a coach creating an enviornment where the next kid that has a concussion lies about his symptoms to avoid punishments and/or modified training excercises that designed to shame or embarass somebody back on the football field.
For instance, it might be perfectly safe to make this guy ride an excercise bike in a pink tu tu, but is that going to make another player more or less likely to report his concussion symptoms in the future.
Your point is that the evidence points to this kid being full of shit, and he well may be. But I’m not sure that is the end of the discussion.
