Wrestling Update - Actual Update Edition

As previously noted in the Non-Update, it'll be Action City this weekend as PSU hosts the appropriately named Penn State Open. As an Open Tourney, we'll be seeing both the present and future of PSU wrestling, as both the Official Team and our Shadow Studs will be a-grapplin' - often against each other. I'll split this up into 2 areas: what we're going into battle with this year, and what's down the road a piece. (I threw in a little country corn-pone lingo there in case TP decides to peek in so he can continue to justify his tOSU decision).

Let's begin.

Star-divide

Official Team

Penn State opened the season ranked #15, promptly dropped its opener to #17 Lehigh by a score of 23-14, and was unimpressive doing it. PSU was dropped to #19 in the next week's poll.

Cael's Kids bounced back by beating Bloomsburg 23-15, then headed to New York for the 4-team Sprawl and Brawl Duals. (A 'duals tourney' is a round robin-style team vs team event). After a somewhat lackluster 18-17 defeat of Rutgers, the guys seemed to kick it into gear by thrashing Hah-vud (a better program than you might think) 36-6, and feasting on #15 Edinboro 22-9. Now 4-1, PSU is back to its #15 ranking.

At this point, Penn State is not a strong dual meet team on the national level, and they're not going to be. Five of the 10 weight classes have pretty serious holes, where not only are wins not particularly likely, but giving up bonus points are a distinct possibility. Bonus points are awarded when a wrestler wins by either major decision, technical fall or pin. To be a dominant dual meet team, you want everyone in your lineup to be ranked in the top 20 in their weight class, and a large majority of those to be in the top ten. As of now, PSU has 5 ranked wrestlers, of which 4 are in the top ten. They are (by weight, name, class, record and rank):

125     Brad Pataky             Jr      5-0     #6     (Very tough kid who is gonna get even better)

149     Frank Molinaro       So     5-0     #6     (A brute. Coulda/ shoulda been redshirted as a frosh)

157    Cyler Sanderson    Sr      4-1     #4     (Cael's bro, obviously. Only loss to guy ranked #3)

165    Dan Vallimont         Sr      4-1     #9     (Not flashy, but very, very solid guy)

285   Cameron Wade      So      3-2    #11   (Very stable this year, and young - gonna be a force the next 2 years)

That's it. The weight classes at 133, 141, 174, 184 and 197 are unsettled. Senior David Erwin had pretty high expectations for this year at 174, but never seemed to get untracked. He's looked better since moving up to 184. He'll probably get his share of wins, and won't be giving up easy points. The other weights could be troublesome.

The better news is that this could be a pretty good tournament team, where individuals basically wrestle for themselves, but accumulate team points with wins, and bonus team points for mat-wiping guys. Two years ago Penn State finished 3rd in the NCAA tourney on the strength of only 4 place winners. Phil Davis won the NC, while Dan Vallimont (above) took 3rd, Mark McKnight wrestled the tourney of his life to take 4th, and current Shadow Stud Bubba Jenkins lost in the finals for runnerup honors. That team was not a dual meet monster either. If all the above listed guys continue to improve and can have a good tournament run, Penn State could conceiveably have a top 5 finish.

Because Sanderson is redshirting the entire freshman class and has relegated two of his best returners (senior All-American Bubba Jenkins and soph All-American Quentin Wright) to Shadow Stud status, he's pretty much doing the 'Line-up Juggle' to put his most competitive team on the mat.

Tomorrow I'll post an updated look at our Shadow Studs, and what they've been up to since the last  shadow-team review

The future looks sweeeeet indeed.

Much, much better than the Non-Update Update.

Indeed

Confucious and I Continue to Contemplate the Conclusiveness of this Contribution.

Which rankings do you prefer and why? Intermat, Win, Other?

Easy for you to say.

I primarily use Intermat, as they seem more involved in the high school aspect, and really do a nice job tracking recruiting. Thus, I pay to access their Primo Info. WIN and Amateur Wrestling News are also useful, but if you really want to know everything from 9th grade to 5th year college wrestling, the Intermat Premium route works best for me.

There are a ton of wrestling sites out there, but they pretty much bounce info back and forth, and my budget only goes so far.

Video-wise, FloWrestling is very good, but the updating is hit or miss.

Do I pass?

Works for me

Was guessing that might be the case, from a brief browse the other day; thanks for the info!

I’ve been out of wrestling for many (many!) years, so this Sanderson thing at Penn State is a welcome invitation back in. The 10-class dual strategy and individual-to-team scoring aspects are still new to me, so your posts are helpful in that regard. It’s gonna be interesting to learn Team Strategy watching Cael’s Start or Shadow decisions. Also, with a new big basement that is sure to double as a Man Cave and wrestling room, and two little boys on the way, I can see the sport’s presence in my future.

Plus, plus! I get to hang out more with Streak in here! Thanks dude.

I don't know you you mentioned this earlier

but what exactly is this shadow stud/shadow team thing you talk about?

by The JuggerNitt on Dec 4, 2009 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Its all of the guys that are redshirting this year

So, they can still wrestle at “open” tourneys as individuals, but not as Penn State representatives. You will not see them in any dual meets, or the big tens or nationals. Cael redshirted all of the freshmen and all americans Quentin Wright and Bubba Jenkins. Basically, this “shadow” team is talented enough to field a second competitive team. It bodes well for our future.

Why are the 2 AAs from last year being redshirted??

I may be wrong but I believe

Bubba Jenkins had grade/academic issues and Wright had an injury/is making a weight change.

Yes, Roland.

Bubba had some academic issues that have since been resolved, but isn’t eligible until January 1, which is before all the really serious stuff begins. Redshirting makes a lot more sense anyway, since the guy he lost the NCAA champ match (Iowa’s Brent Metcalf) is back for his senior year. I’m a-lookin’ for the Bubster to kick some serious tail next year.

Wright is fine, but never got the benefit of his redshirt last year, even though he did a great job as a true frosh. Amazing, actually, at that high of a weight class. He can pretty much name his weight class at PSU at this point. He’s gonna be a stormtrooper next year, abusing and mangling all that oppose him. At least, that’s the plan. I’d hate to have to sic Jtot on him.

The Shadow Studs

are the crop of ass-kicking freshman recruited last year, all of whom are being redshirted (team injuries permitting). Unlike other sports, these guys can still compete in collegiate ‘open’ tourneys, as unattached wrestlers. It gives them great experience in adjusting to the rigors of D1 competition, yet allows them to retain their 4 years of eligibility. These guys (including a few of our high school senior commits) have entered 3 tourneys already, with excellent results.

The Shadow Studs also include the two redshirted returning AA’s: soph Quentin Wright (6th place NCAA as a frosh), and senior Bubba Jenkins (NCAA 2nd place two years ago). Wright was going to be redshirted last year, but injuries wrecked the lineup and forced him to burn it. Jenkins got hurt near the end of last season, and went 2 and out in the double-elimination NCAA tourney. Giving these two guys an entire year in the practice room with Cael borders on the obscene. Very high NCAA finishes should result. Potentially the highest possible.

These two are being redshirted this year because Cael thinks it’s best for them and the team’s future. Simple as that.

This weekend will be lots of fun, as the Official Team and the Shadow Studs are both entered, and will be beating on each other for bragging rights. I’m trying to get my act together to post the Shadow Studs update before Sunday’s tourney so you can all get an idea of who’s who/what’s what to interpret the weekend’s results.

I’ll be baaaack…………….

Nittany Open

This tourney should be wicked. 125 lbs is loaded with ranked guys and a 8th grader named Chance Marstellar who trains with Cary Kolat. The kid pinned Evan Yenelovich who was a state champ and a three-time finalist. Also on display will be the Alton twins and Sam Sherlock. Could be a real good tourney for all wrestling fans and for the Nits. It is great to see the program growing by leaps and bounds.

by Mat Burns on Dec 4, 2009 6:07 PM EST reply actions

Ah, yes.......

Cary Kolat: a Pennsyvania monster (4 time State Champ, 137-0) that originally enrolled at PSU, he was a 2 time All American here before he lost his way with the help of Demon Alcohol and was dismissed from the team. He transferred to Lock Haven and proceeded to win 2 NC’s.

We’ve seen this before at Penn State; Chris Kwortnik and Garrett Scott come immediately to mind. Tremendous home grown wrestlers that come here, end up screwing things up in and out of the classroom, then transfer and have phenomenal success elsewhere. It almost felt like no one was watching outside the practice room. I’m hoping these are changes that arrived with Cael. Waaay too much Pennsylvania talent slipping off elsewhere in the past. Of course, that talent is the reason Cael took this job in the first place: if you get first dibs on the Pa. kids, you’ll win NC’s. That’s a fact, Jack.

125 is indeed looking fun, and will be a great chance to see exactly where Pataky is at this point.

Marsteller’s been on the national radar for a few years now, as MB points out, and Yenelovich is no fluke. That said, Marsteller’s gonna see some things this weekend that he’s never seen before in a competition setting. Will be very interesting to see how he holds up.

He’ll also fall in love with Penn State, win us 4 NC’s, and we all live happily ever after. (I’m hoping that becomes a fact, Jack!).
