So disappointed in the Basketball team.

We should go back to NJIT if this is how we play against a team with a pulse.

It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will-Sam Cooke

Did Virginia have a pulse?

Just saying. We’re incosistent. We already knew that

I'm pretty sure they are picked to finish

in the lower half of the ACC. And our awesome defense made that game alot more than it should have been.

I'm pretty sure we were trailing

And I’m pretty sure we were the underdog

They’re young and they’re incosistent. Don’t be so negative.

I'm not happy

with outshooting the team barely, them shooting under 30%, and still losing.

Whatever, man

But don’t start up the “we suck again” stuff either. We’ll get there

I've been a fan

since 05. Watching 12 game losing streaks isn’t fun. But hearing “wait til’ next year” starts to sound like a broken record.

It's your own fault if you expected this team to be consistent this year

Sorry, but that’s a fact

You don't know what I expected.

I expected a little more than the play calls being “wait until Talor puts up a 3”.

The talent is there, and they may get there, but they won’t do it with the style of play that’s going on today.

We miss Cornley and Assassin

We already knew this

Jones has regressed, but other than that, I’m not that upset

Temple is decent anyway

See you guys later

We would have to pull a miracle to beat them next year

I think it will be closer than people think, but that will be our defense saving our asses, hopefully the O-line gets better so we can actually run the ball like 2008 again for Royster (assuming, and there’s a majority chance, he comes back), that might be our only chance unless Newsome turns into a Golden God by next year (a man can dream…)

Icers game is getting interesting

Not the score – the Icers are destroying UDel 6-0. But the game has devolved into miniature brawls and scrums, and the UDel goalie was just booted from the game for trying to pick a fight with our goalie (Teddy Hume) from the other side of the rink. Teddy didn’t care.

My friend brought this up last night

I wanted USC to lose again, but he pointed out that a Zona loss would hurt Iowa’s SOS, but probably not enough to make any difference and it’s a moo point since the announcement is tomorrow.

But honestly, I’m in the “Iowa deserves it more than we do” camp, which obviously means nothing for BCS bowls, so really, I could care less if their SOS is hurt by a Zona loss, I really, really want USC to lose.

by dawsonPSU10 on Dec 5, 2009 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

It won't matter

A Zona loss won’t hurt them enough for us to jump ahead of us. And I’m not going Bad Rambler on you, but they do deserve it more than we do this year, even though that is irrelevant in the BCS.

So root for Arizona, USC is a FAR FAR FAR greater evil than Iowa. And USC losing brings me much happiness.

but some of those 2nd tier games are waiting to see who does or doesn’t get picked to the BCS bowls. So I’m sure the Citrus is waiting until tomorrow to see which Big Ten team doesn’t get picked to the BCS bowl.

It'd be kinda weird for the lower tier bowls to choose before the higher tier bowls do, no?

Although it’d be hilarious if the Independence Bowl or whatever chose Nevada today, the BCS left Boise State out of the picture leaving them to some bizarre esoteric bowl no one cares about (which is 90% of them actually).

now there is no chance they’ll have a winning (currently just a non-losing) season, but also no chance they’ll have a losing season, which given their tendency to get overmatched, would be likely.

It will come down to the human polls

the statistical rankings already prefer Cincy to TCU, and a win over a top 30 team in Pitt will only help. The question will be if the human polls have TCU far enough ahead to negate the statistical rankings.

I won't argue that as I can easily see it happening

It’s just unfair is all. But that’s not what the BCS is all about.

by skarocksoi on Dec 5, 2009 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

I have a slightly different perspective

and it’s something I’ve been internally developing for awhile. I’m no longer saying a team is better than another just because “one plays defense” or “they have no offense.” At the end of the day, the goal is to win football games in whatever way possible. TCU and Cincy (and Texas and Florabama) have two different styles of play, but both have been extremely successful in their system. I’m not sure which team should be ranked ahead because both teams have yet to show any flaws in the system which led to a loss.

To look at it a different way, two people come to the same answer of a math problem using two different processes to get to the correct final answer. Is one answer better than the other? I, like you, prefer a more balanced team – I really like TCU as well. But I struggle to devalue a team for winning by putting together a system that focuses on their strengths and adjusts for their weaknesses.

"In the beginning the Universe was created.

by IcersGuy on Dec 5, 2009 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, its fine if you are one dimensional.

But if it is easier to be one dimensional against lesser competition(a la Hawaii).

People will simply perceive TCU to have played a lesser schedule, fair or not.

by Roland86 on Dec 5, 2009 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think you can say that one team is better than another

simply because one team is more complete than the other. TCU has a good offense and a good defense. You can infer some conclusions from the strength of each team, but the only way to truly find out is for the two to play. I just dont think its reasonable for Cincy to jump TCU when that head to head doesnt exist and TCU looks like the more complete team.

by skarocksoi on Dec 5, 2009 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

Just a few points

what defines “complete”? And what does "complete mean? Is “good” enough of a descriptor to define complete. Because I’m sure we can find a number of teams that were “good” on both sides of the ball but still lost. All I’m saying is that there is a bias towards a preference as to how football should be played. But the game of football doesn’t care how it’s played, it only cares who wins. And whoever can put together the better system to win is the “better team”.

As for head to head, I’ll agree. And that’s where this issue of connectivity comes into play. It’s impossible for all the teams to play each other, but the two teams can be connected. The issue arises from the fact that there are too many teams in the FBS, and now that most teams play a FCS team, the connectivity between two teams not in the same conference becomes less and less.

That’s where some of the statistical rankings come in to play – they can do a decent job comparing these teams statistically (or just based on W’s and L’s) to come to some determination as to which team has performed better. Right now, most of these say Cincy has done better, even prior to today’s game against Pitt.

by jtothep on Dec 5, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Complete would be "operates at a high level in all three phases of the game"

ie Cincy has a very good offense that can overcome its poor defensive play, but if they were forced to rely on their defense to win them a game, I doubt they could. Todays game is a prime example of that. They were unable to stop pitt from scoring in the final minutes and needed their offense to go and win the game.

I’m not questioning their record and how they came about it, but for two teams that haven’t lost, I don’t see why Cincy should or would jump TCU, especially when TCU seems like the more complete team, at least in my eyes.

by skarocksoi on Dec 5, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

But therein lies the point
They were unable to stop pitt from scoring in the final minutes and needed their offense to go and win the game.

They have created a system that revolves around their offense and they’ve made it successful. To this point, there is nothing to make us believe that, should they be in a similar situation against any other top team, Cincy would not be able to do the same thing. (Also note that Cincy held Oregon State to their lowest point total on the season, and Fresno State to their second lowest, so that defense isn’t complete crap.)

As for ranking ahead of TCU or not, that’s up to the voters. You, as a voter, could make the case to keep TCU ahead – poll inertia plays huge this time of year. At the same time, there are voters who could believe that this Cincy-Pitt game showed that they had Cincy incorrectly ranked. That’s up to them. Statistical rankings just look at what was done on the field by all teams to come up with their own rankings.

Again, for me, I’d prefer to see TCU in MNC should Texas lose tonight. But I also see the idea as to why Cincy might be there instead, without it being a huge transgression against the Horned Frogs.

"In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."

by IcersGuy on Dec 5, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

They’ve created a system that worked against the teams they’ve played. That’s all that they need to do to get where they are now, and I’m not begrudging them at all. All I’m saying is that in my eyes, TCU is better in all 3 phases of the game and has been consistantly so all year, so I would believe if the two would play each other TCU would be victorious.

Without the two playing each other, its impossible to actually say who is the better team. Im just drawing conclusions given the data provided.

No, overall they are very good.

But one truly dominating player like that can make everyone around them look that much better too. When you pick up a double team every play, it opens up a lot for your teammates to do things, which everyone else will have to adjust to next year. Luckily we get them early before they hopefully have a lot of time to.

I'd have to think about it again

Houston’s loss makes me think twice about Keenum. But McCoy and Gerhart are the top 2 at this point. Ingram played his way back into the top 5 this week (Heisman candidates aren’t on the bench on a goal-to-go situation when your MNC chances are on the line – see last week vs. Auburn). So there’s 3.

I’ve wanted to keep Golden Tate on the list, but with ND at 6-6 and refusing a bowl game, I have trouble putting him on the list over a guy like Case Keenum. C.J. Spiller might be on the list, and might make the list if he can lead Clemson to victory tonight over GT.

Jeremiah Masoli and Kellen Moore would also get some looks.
