You Going to the Capital One Bowl?

Are you following the team down to Florida? Where are you hanging out while you are down there? Any plans for New Years? Where are your seats? Drop your plans, ideas and comments about the Cap 1 Bowl here.

Star-divide

I just booked my seats in section 305. It seemed like on Ticketmaster that the Penn State section has filled up more than the LSU section as of now. It will be interesting to see if Penn State can own the state of Florida yet again (2006 Orange Bowl comes to mind).  I want to see where fellow Nittany Lions will be congregating for New Years. I did City Walk for NYE in 2003 and I felt that it was rather over priced for what they offered... It also didn't help things that 2003 New Years was a monsoon in Orlando.

I'm trying to get something together

We have family in Florida that we’re looking at staying with, so hopefully we can make it a cheap gas/food/tickets trip.

Since I’m a NASCAR fan, I’ll probably be taking a spin up to Daytona to check out the museum and stuff. I’d also like to go to Universal if I get a chance, since I’ve already been on a well documented (despite what Rambler would say) trip to Disney.

And sorry, no ticket plans as of yet. I’m probably going to grab a couple of student tickets and whatever the parents can get through the NLC. If there’s any left from the bowl, I’ll fill out what I need from them, or stubhub if they’re gone.

P.S. I’ve rec’d this as the unofficial BSD travel thread.

I was going to go down and stay with family

But honestly I could really use the time off to relax instead of travel and the extra money to pay bills. So I’ve decided to stay home. Oh well. Hopefully I’ll make it down to our next BCS game and I may try to get to Tuscalosca next season.

There’s a ton of Alumni Association events down there, lots of really cool stuff if you’re plugged into the the AA you should get some information soon about what they’re doing.

Just booked it

I’ll be there. This will actually be my first Penn State game since, well, the CapOne bowl against Auburn.

Seats suck, but at least they’re not expensive and are on the PSU side. The Citrus Bowl isn’t that big though, so it’s not a problem.

I might go, it is only a 5 hour drive, but then I will have to cut my stay in PA short by about 4 days. I guess I have some thinking to do.

I got the $60 tickets

They’re about on the 30 (can’t check the exact section at the moment), not quite halfway up the stands on the Big Ten sideline. We actually got them on Saturday night when we decided that no matter what happened, the BCS bowl wouldn’t work because of the date, and whether it was Iowa or PSU in the Capital One, either the Missus or I would be happy.

I’m still trying to figure out why these were $60, and the $85 tickets were five rows back in the end zone…

My wife went there and it looks like we’re going. Probably going to drive, swing by her sisters place in Baton Rouge to drop off the kiddies and pick up some drunken LSU folks for the rest of the 17 hr drive from TX. Should be loads of fun – Love to party with the cajun folks.

i'll be there.

It’ll be nice to not have to endure a flight to get to see PS for once as Otown is only about an hour from me.

Some advice to those of you who have not been to the lovely Citrus Bowl before:

1. it is in the crappiest area of Orlando and therefore do not park your car in any lot not an official parking lot. you will find it missing or having remarkably less features when you return. Do not wander around East Orlando under any circumstances. Parking yes, is a major hassle but there is plenty of it within sight of the stadium.

2. I-4 is a parking lot on most days at best, if you’re staying around Disney plan for an hour to drive and park.

3. Quirky FL open container laws allow for anyone not driving the vehicle to have an open beverage but be sensible about it. The FHP, OPD and OCSD live to fill state and county coffers with fines from unsuspecting visitors. I’m not recommending this, but if you do choose to do this put it in a cup.

4. If you arrive in town w/o tix, you’ll find resellers on the north side of the stadium in a no scalp zone. (this may or may not still be there, but I think it still is)

5. Flying into Orlando/Sanford can sometimes be considerably cheaper than into OIA…. Yes, it’s out in the middle of BFE but you’re going to need a rental car anyhow.

6. Downtown after dark is a pretty vibrant scene, again just be careful where you park. If it says tow zone, count on it there are patrols of tow trucks out every night.

Looking forward to the game! Anyone have thoughts yet on an official*ish* BSD Tailgate?

Thanks Bailey

for the links and suggestions. I can’t remember what was fun about Orlando in 1987 or about ten years later for the two Citrus Bowls I went to except we lost. Since the mind tends to block out bad memories, this is a good reminder.

I can tell you that jai alai, which is a fun way to kill a few hours, seems to be a dying sport in FL, and in fact the Orlando “fronton” is closing their doors forever just a few days before the bowl game. Bumber.

Anybody got a good link to the PSU alumni activites prior to the big game? And where are the alumni staying, and where are the players staying? I got a room right now at the Ritz, which believe it or not has a stay-two-nights-get-the-third-night-free deal. If anyone’s interested.

Traffic Question

We will be coming in from the North the day of the game. Will be visiting the some of the wife’s family in Deland. How do you think the traffic will be traveling south into Orlando? Do you have any alternate route suggestions? Also…..I too want to know what is up with the “officialish” BSD Tailgate!? Thanks!

I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?

by pic15 on Dec 9, 2009 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

no real alternate routes

from there b/c the citrus bowl basically sits at the junction of 4 and 408. it should be about an hour from there for you.

Also, since I'm not going but I spent a lot of time researching

Airtran seems to be the cheapest out of BWI, they still have non-stop flights on New Years Eve one way for $67 per person on their website. The sweet spot for prices seems to be leave New Years Eve and get back Monday or Tuesday…

And then stopped in Chicago, drove through South Bend saw TD Jesus and memorial stadium, and wasn’t all that impressed, suck it ND, then went up to Milwaukee.

i can however confirm sightings of visually stimulating bachelorettes in said midwest. at least in the ND area. i would assume that they are well economically stable as well since they do attend ND. i can also confirm said counterparts in central OH as well. unfortunately in both situations you are consorting with the enemies…but there is always a chance for reform.

Cheap Hotel Rooms via Hotwire

Paid $45 a night for the Rosen Grande….which is not the Ritz but is more than adequete for 2 nights stay in Orlando. They have a bunch of rooms in the Orlando area….some cheaper than this. Wife wont let me buy less than a “4-star” though based on past experience with the site. Also sounds like there are cheap flights via Airtran and Delta usually matches their price.

Hotels in Orlando

We’ll be staying for 4 nights and want to choose a hotel in the next few days. I want the nicest I can get for $150 a night or less, with a heated pool just in case it’s warm enough that weekend to be outside in a bathing suit, and in a decent area with an option to walk to some restaurants/bars.

Any advice? How’s the Rosen Plaza? It’s next to a shopping center called the Pointe.

Where are all of you staying???

Sheraton Orlando Downtown

My buddy is huge Starwoods guy and it was the closest to the stadium. I think I had seen it mentioned on here previously as well. Official BSD headquarters hotel? It looked pretty decent and was pricing under 120 a night last I looked.

Also anybody have any insight on getting to the game without driving? I’m not trying to pay a massive under-25 surcharge just to rent a car to go to and from the game, but would also prefer not to walk through scenic East Orlando.

And any ideas for NYE?

by LegalLion on Dec 10, 2009 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

check with the hotel?

b/c it IS so close they may be running shuttles to the stadium or will have the LYNX Orlando mass transit schedule that will get you there.

def do not walk :)

Most of the bars downtown have parties planned for NYE. I’ve done CityWalk a few times for NYE and it’s the touristy thing but still a good time, same for Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island.

I just found out my Dad got tickets, so I'm going, but does anyone know of anything else to do?

Yes, yes, Disney World and Universal, but anything else? That’s our biggest problem right now. My dad has a sh*tload of frequent flyer miles, but there’s a blackout on flights until Tuesday, so we can’t leave early, and we’re trying to find something to do. I’m not a huge fan of amusement parks, and while the last time I was at disney was in the 3rd grade (13 years ago), I don’t have much interest in going back. Most likely we’ll go to Disney regardless b/c I know my sister will want to go, we still need to fill in some time for the rest of the trip. Seaworld has also come up.

So anyone have any suggestions? I’m an animal guy so Zoo’s are always an option, so any good ones in the vicinity of Orlando? Thanks for the help.

Disney World is hardly an amusement park in the traditional sense

while they do have some fun/cool rides, if that’s what you are into you should go to Universal (I know that’s now what you are into, as you already stated that)

Disney has a lot of just really interesting shows/interactive “exhibits” and such. I really like their technology displays and such, as well.

Is it way overpriced? Definitely. Is it enjoyable? I find it hard to believe that you wouldn’t enjoy it (it is also a VERY different experiences when you are older. Almost like how when you re-watch movies you enjoyed when you were a kid you pick up on all these subtle things that add a whole new layer to it.

Your kids sound like a lot like me

My dad and I took a trip to AZ, NV (Vegas), and SoCA when I was 17, and despite seeing George Carlin at the Stardust in Vegas, and seeing Hollywood for the first time, my favorite part of that trip was easily, easily all the nature stuff we did in Arizona. It’s inexplicably beautiful there. Few things can compare to the first time you see the Grand Canyon.

Hmm, canoeing with alligators sounds like fun, I might have to look into that. I had looked into a few of the alligator parks they have in FL, but the only one that seemed interesting was (and I think it’s the most famous) the St. Augustine Alligator farm (St. Augustine looked like a cool town too), but Google said it’s like a 2 hr. drive from Orlando, but if we’re really pressed for things to do, that drive might not be so bad.

by dawsonPSU10 on Dec 17, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

St Augustine (and the surrounding area) is a really cool part of FL, but pretty far from Orlando. If you really like the natural stuff of FL, there’s a state park called Blue Springs where the manatees spend their winters and you can go swimming with them. Can’t remember exactly where that was, but it was BFE-FL. The manatees are like peacuful swimming cows (is that too country?), but my kids were still freaked out and practically walked on water to get out of there. Good stuff.

Oh, and absolutely right about the Grand Canyon. Uncomparable.

Walking from the Best Western

So I got a hotel room at the Best Western, West Orlando which is .89 mi from the stadium (specifically so I could walk and not have to drive to the game). Everyone is saying ‘dont walk through East Orlando’

I google-map-walked the distance and it doesn’t look like a terribly bad area. Is it that rough? Should we just cab it?

Let me know what you think… Oh and I’m from the 717, so I’m pretty hard.
