December Recruiting Thread

It's a long time until Jan 1st and I know that at least for me, recruiting is only interesting when there's no actual football to talk about...  Anyway, here's your updates (I have no insider knowledge or access, no pay site memberships, therefore this is all free content I found on the interwebs):

COMMITTED/UNSIGNED Pos Stars Ht Wt 40 RR Video Enrolled Hometown

Star-divide

The obvious challenge now isn't getting new verbal commits; it's simply signing the kids who've verball committed... When you have a top 5 class you're going to have all the scumbag coaches [cough Meyer cough] in the country coming for your blue chip recruits.  Here's some scuttlebutt:

The Good:

Paul Jones:  Looks to be enrolling early, as in 1 month from now, after being iffy early in the year is now talking the talk of a great Penn State player.  Says he's built great relationships with other commits and he'll get to play with them during the Army All American game.

The Bad:

Dominique Easley:  A stellar DE and a serious need for Penn State, committed after a long look at other schools, now recently took an official visit to Oregon "I’m still committed to Penn State, but I’m considering Oregon."  Anyway, he's got an official visit to Penn State coming up which might right the ship.  Doesn't help matters when this kid visited us during the Temple game, and then visited Oregon during the Civil War.

The Ugly:

Adrian  Coxson -  McQuerry basically told Coxson there's no room for him, doesn't return his calls, and encouraged him to look elsewehere; this AFTER our boy LJ Sr. recruited his face off to get the kid to commit early.  Coxson took a good look at UF, and it looks like he's ready to jump ship on us.  Recently LJ Sr and Big Red made a visit to his house, that's left us with a lot of uncertainty at this point.  You can speculate all you want on this, but honestly I have no idea why a position coach would undermine the recruiting of another position coach.  Big Red lost major points for this debacle, in my book at least.

Kids we're still after:

Lattimore, Floyd, and now Thorton.  Thorton (DT) and Lattimore (RB) both visited for the jaOSU game and showered PSU with praise.  Thorton is a late offer due to the mess with Floyd.  As I'm sure most people have heard, we're basically out of the race for DT Floyd after Urban Meyer gave him all the negative recruiting he could.

Under Armor All American Game:  (Black Team)

40 Dakota Royer DE 6-3, 220 Manheim Central (Pa.) Penn State

47 Dominique Easley DE 6-3, 260 Curtis (N.Y.) Penn State

54 Miles Dieffenbach C 6-5, 277 Fox Chapel (Pa.) Penn State

75 Evan Hailes DT 6-1, 315 Oscar Frommel Smith (Va.) Penn State

Army All American Game (East Team):

Khairi Fortt No. 2 OLB Penn State

Mike Hull No. 8 OLB Penn State

Paul Jones No. 7 PQB

Penn State

Silas Redd No. 6 RB

Penn State

Zach Zwinak No. 1 FB Penn State

That Coxson situation

Is on the “UGA abandonment of Khairi Fortt while on official visit” level of EPIC FAIL. They better fix this. We’re not bad off at WR, especially with The Drake looking as good as he has, but we can’t afford to lose a kid this close to PA that has been a solid commitment for almost a year.

by dawsonPSU10 on Dec 7, 2009 10:58 AM EST reply actions

You ever think that maybe there is a reason for this?

I find it hard to believe that the coaches (or even just one coach) would full out turn a kid away like that, especially an uber talented one. Does anyone have any dirt? I mean did the coaches find out something negative about Coxson and didn’t want him here due to our recent troubles? Grades or off the field? I don’t want to slander someone, Im just trying to figure out a reason for this.

Either way, at least WR is a position we will be fairly set at for awhile and this debacle won’t be devastating. If it is simple as a problem of not enough schollies, I wonder if maybe they just like Norwood more and made Coxson the sacrificial lamb.

Completely a wild guess

but I bet its something along the lines of personality/meshing with the team. I just hope this didn’t put a sour taste in LJSr.’s mouth (that Big Red can essentially undercut him whenever he wants).

And it’s libelous, what you are saying, not slanderous. Use defame, to be safe.

It is kind of laughable now about the Meyer negative recruiting thing

I have met Meyer and thought he was a decent coach, but to be saying other schools have “legal” issues, while he has had 29 arrests since he started at Florida is a bit of a joke.

I am Laura Nichols and I like Bacon.

by carolinaeasy on Dec 7, 2009 11:15 AM EST reply actions

The key to the Meyer angle

Was his claim that Penn State didn’t stick up for its players who got into trouble, specifically our black players. And for the record, if being held accountable for your actions and “sticking up for your players” are mutually exclusive, then Meyer’s right. Meyer has a well document history of not holding his start players accountable for their actions.

The bottom line is that if you expect that you’re going to be in trouble a lot, and don’t want to be held accountable for it, then we don’t want you at Penn State anyway.

Urban

quickly forgets his star DE was passed out at the wheel, which pretty much hurt the defense enough to pull a no show during the SEC title game…

I know college football is cut throat, but it is pretty pathetic that you have 50 year old men trying to one up each other on the scumbag scale.

Well from what I gathered of the situation Meyer and a former PSU, now Florida coach claim that PSU does not stick up for its player, especially black players. I think we can all look at the legal issues a few years back. Sure a few guys got booted, but plenty were allowed to stay on the team.

Now Meyer has booted some of his own for legal issues. In this weeks SI issue he says (and I paraphrase since the mag is at home) “some guys violate our core beliefs as a team”. He goes on to say that is “lying to me, stealing and hitting a girl”. Now I am sure there are guys that got booted from PSU I am going to miss, but the two who jump out at me are Chris Baker (god having him jump out at me is scary), and Chris “Stabby McStabbins” Bell. Now didn’t Baker have several run ins with the law? And if attempting to stab a teammate is not “a violation of our core beliefs” I do not know what is a violation.

Meyer wants to point fingers but at least Paterno has never had a highly recruited player go OD on X, after being removed from the program.

One thing to consider is that if a kid like Baker is in a bad situation, friends with the wrong people, and in trouble all the time the best thing for them is to get a wake-up call and go to another school. Baker will probably end up in the NFL, and he’ll probably be better off than if he had stayed in State College. In the end Joe did him a favor by kicking him off the team, b/c all accounts are that he cleaned up his act and grew up a lot.

Just to make our recruitment class that much sweeter...

Clausen is going pro, apparently on Weis’s insistence. ND’s second stringer is a senior and will graduate. Their third string QB is out with a torn ACL until mid summer at best.

Also, it looks like Hendrix, their 4 star recruit, will not be enrolling early.

So Notre Dame’s new head coach may not even have a quarterback to practice with until June or July at best. I find that deliciously hilarious.

Are we even still trying for Lattimore?

Royster may or may not go, we’ve got Green, Beachum, Carter, Dukes, ZZ/Redd (Little Redd GINGER SMASH)

seems like the stable is full

by Hamulus on Dec 7, 2009 2:39 PM EST reply actions

Full stable is half full

Beachum tore his ACL and may not return until midseason next year at best,

So if Royster goes, and I believe he will, here’s the 2010 depth chart:

Green (converted DB, not an every down back, loves the fumbles)
Carter (perennial 4th string backup, still very talented)
Dukes (looks like a friggin DE, who knows)
Redd (I think Redd is going to be awesome)

So if you’re some 5-star super talented NFL-ready guy, you have to imagine he looks at that depth chart and says “hell yeah I can beat out Carter, Dukes, and Green”…

I don’t think he fumbled once this year if I remember correctly. But also wasn’t active for as long as he was. He really beat himself up over that fumble in the Rose Bowl, and practiced ball handling all summer.

Do you think he’s burned out on the JoePa/Penn State scene? He seemed lackluster toward the end, attitudinally as well and apparently Joe ‘had a talk with him?’

Are any of those things considerations that add to your suspicion he’ll leave?

Well, If I were him, I might leave.

He likely will be getting his degree soon, since he is a 4th year JR. Next year(his last) is looking to be tough. He is listed by most as a 2nd-3rd round pick. Given the high bust rate of PSU backs, this is likely the best he’ll get. There aren’t a ton of stud RBs this year (i think).

The only reason he might have to stay is to completely re-write the rushing record book.

two words

Sam Bradford

Go now and get at least 4th round money and a shot at 2nd or 3rd round. Go next year and risk losing it all for (maybe) a bump up in the round you’re drafted in. Royster’s never going to be a first round guy, he just doesn’t fit that NFL mold. So he’s probably going to go in the 3rd round this year, and if he comes back and plays better and avoids injury he might go in the early 2nd round… Not worth the risk.

He’ll get Joe’s blessing he earned his degree and helped us to a B10 title — getting drafted and making an impact in the NFL will give Penn State something to chirp about to recruits.

Too many is never a bad thing with young talent

I’ve said it before – I believe Royster stays (maybe just because I want him to.)

If he stay’s or not, BB gets the redshirt, just makes sense.

Green, Carter will see the first action (if sans Royster); if Green or Carter for some reason aren’t playing at the level they should – in goes Dukes. Redd will get the RS.

I’m already in love with the idea of ZZ/Redd in the backfield, because I have this feeling that they’re going to be a force. Redd has been absolutely dominant this year in HS, and so has ZZ. For the record I don’t think we’ll need Lattimore.

I really didn't think we had a chance with Lattimore

but then I was convinced he was actually giving us a shot, and recently I’ve been convinced we really don’t need him. Redd has been getting a LOT of hype from what I remember from the camps over the summer, and is just an all around blue and white blooded guy, which I love.

by dawsonPSU10 on Dec 7, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, I really like Redd a lot — he’s got that compact every-down back type of build, he’s a ridiculous athlete, and he bleeds Blue and White and always has. We’re lucky enough to have him, but to have ZZ back there at FB is almost too good to be true.

Don't forget we've still got Suhey who's is a RS soph this year

And has really been a great weapon this year. But yes, with the QB talent coming in (unrefined at the moment as it may be), RB stable, and FB situation, our backfield is looking bright as hell. Not to mention the stable of linemen we have too (again, not good this year, but with experience, we’ve got a ton of talent there, Scout has the elligibility chart, just take a gander at the linemen, next year we’ll have available:
Srs: Wiz, Klopacz, and Eliades
Jrs: Barham, Pannell, Tortorelli (don’t know who he is, but his name sounds delicious), and Troutman
Sophs: Farrell, Stank, and Terry
RS Freshmen: Arcidiacono, Cadogen, Figueroa, Gress, Howle (who I think I’ve heard very good things about and was one of the guys that enrolled early last Janurary), Shrive, and Urschel
True Froshes (likely RS’s): Kolb, Rickets, Graham, Diffenbach

Lattimore

As I work in Lattimore’s back yard and work with his cousin, I think we have a great shot at Lattimore. He loved his visit and loved the coaches. The only drawback is the 9 hour drive for his family. I keep trying to pry info out of his cous but Lattimore keeps it close to the chest. PS South Carolina should be annexed by West Virginia.

If Big Red isn't returning calls to Coxson

then why did he and LJ Sr just do an in house visit to him on 12/1? Where are these rumors coming from?

by LionsandBear on Dec 8, 2009 2:43 PM EST reply actions

I was summarizing about a months worth of developments with the situation

The most recent development is that LJ Sr. and McQuerry went to his house, and thats the last I’ve heard. Up until then it was reported to some degree (I don’t have any pay site memberships) that things were not going well and that Coxson was being pushed to look at other schools by someone on the PSU staff (allegedly McQuerry). This was probably fleshed out a great deal by the pay sites but to some extent it was posted on BSD and other sites.

"We hugged as grown men do. It was a great moment. Then, it was business as usual." -- LJ Sr.

by millzners on Dec 8, 2009 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

Fleshed out by the pay sites

That’s what I’m kind of wondering. It just honestly makes zero sense to me that anyone on the staff would tell a top WR recruit, “You should look around”, when it’s extremely likely we may not fill out every spot available for this class now that Floyd is pretty much done. Especially of all people the WR COACH! I just saw Scout changed Coxson and Easley to “soft verbal” status, so who knows at this point. I’d like to believe these sites are just flaunting rumors because a kid wants to look around a bit, but it’s pretty much their jobs to confirm rumors.

by dawsonPSU10 on Dec 8, 2009 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

Just a hunch...

by the sites changing their status, ’prolly sparks more hits/interest to the sites, …no?

I have heard with other recruits that PSU makes them look around to be sure.

Something about telling them that they absolutely want them, but don’t want any hasty decisions and regret. I had never heard it painted in such a negative light, but am not surprised.

by PSUinBOSSton on Dec 8, 2009 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

Also important to remember

We’re dealing with teenagers here. These are irrational, melodramatic, emotionally-driven people we’re keeping tabs on. So if McQuerry and Coxson aren’t BFF anymore, then one of those creepy recruiting stalkers is probably going to find out and report about it. So it’s really difficult to rationalize the situation.

"We hugged as grown men do. It was a great moment. Then, it was business as usual." -- LJ Sr.

by millzners on Dec 8, 2009 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

I know

My disbelief isn’t that a teenager may be having doubts, it’s with the rumor that a position coach is telling a recruit who he would be coaching, that’s been on board for almost a year, that we’re out of space and he should look around.

If it’s like Boston said, and we encourage recruits to look around to make sure this is the place for them, then I totally respect that, and actually think that’s a great strategy. Get the ones that are sure they’re ready to bleed blue and white for 4/5 years, and they’ll be sure to pour their hearts out when they get here. But telling a recruit we’re running out of room, look elsewhere, just seems ridiculous to me.

by dawsonPSU10 on Dec 8, 2009 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

and it’s perfectly reasonable to assume that’s all that happened but Coxson was put off by it in some way, and then he made a whole lot of drama out of a rather mundane situation. Or that the recruiting sites took a whole bunch of liberty with the modest information they had and spun it into this story we got. Or maybe its all true, and there was a dispute on the coaching staff over whether this kid would work here (don’t forget we still don’t put up with egos and Prima Donnas, no matter how many stars they have).

We made Lattimore's top 5

Rebels assistant coach Bobby Bentley said Tuesday that Lattimore has ruled out UNC, leaving the star running back with a final five of USC, Auburn, Penn State, Oregon and Georgia.

Cross off USC and Oregon, b/c it looks like USC’s got a full stable and Oregon is almost always an erroneous part of every recruit’s top 5. My opinion is this is a Gerogia/Auburn/Penn State battle.

Not to burst your bubble...

but South Carolina matters ALOT to folks in the state here. It is a matter of state pride. I know that seems absurd, and will most likely get a lot of smart ass remarks from folks, but down here it is either Clemson or Carolina when you are a kid, that is the thing people talk about 365. So these kids get a big push from their families and friends to stay in state. You do see the top talent leaving, but the in state talent does seriously consider the two in state programs. Just two years ago the number 1 recruit in the country was Da’Quan Bowers, and he went to Clemson, there is a real pull there.

that means nothing when talking about an instate prospect

This guy doesn’t know what is talked about nationally. He hears what is discussed daily on the news here and on the television here, which has happened to show just about every South Carolina game on Prime Time down here this year. Of the 12 games they played like 7 or 8 were 7 or 8 pm starts.

They get great exposure and the SEC train of thought is that they will compete for the SEC east next year. They are a young team with a great defense. A returning junior QB and young receivers. Until you see the atmosphere and the coverage down here you really have no clue how much pull they have. How is a local boy going to know about what people in Pennsylvania think about USC? Or people in Cali for that matter? He only knows what he sees and I can tell your right now every day in the newspaper, on the news, and on ESPN he sees USC and Clemson.

Nothing premium, just the normal internet rumor mills.

If he’s leaving according to SC folks, then that has to bode well for us. I was under the impression, and correct me if I’m wrong, that he was USC’s to lose, and then we were pretty high as well. But then again, Robert Bolden was MSU’s to lose and look how that turned out…

I have heard a lot of talk about him being wide open

He really hasn’t taken a stance other than to say his top 5. But I will say this about him, he is on a team with 10 or 11 other Division 1 prospects in the senior class. Byrnes is a loaded team, he does get a ton of yards, but he is also playing on a much better team than just about everyone around him.
