I was thinking of starting the ‘I read it and it sucked’ treatment, but when the OP isn’t being surreptitious about plugging his product, is it really warranted?

There is no way

That John Wilkes Booth takes out Joshua Chamberlain.

Further, Chamberlain’s victory would be more accuratly against Hood, at Little Round Top. I would hesitate to give him any manner of victory over Longstreet. Lee beat Longstreet because he was an arrogant bastard that didn’t know when to get the hell out of dodge.

I say let's rock the Orange Bowl, because nobody will remember in five years anyway.

by jesse. on Dec 8, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

I could not disagree more

Chamberlain was one of the finest tactical generals in the Union Army, but Booth was an actor. They are untrustworthy. They sneak up on you.

Also, it was Longstreet, not Hood, who was responsible for the attack on Little Round Top. While Longstreet’s meddling with Hood’s plan was probably justified, it still prevented Hood from attacking in the way he saw fit.

Speaking of letting it go...

I visited the University of Alabama a long time ago, and I swear to god every single building on it’s campus had a sign in front of it explaining that that General Sheridan had burned that building to the ground in 1864 and that it was reconstructed in 18sixty-something. Except of course one, which was a something they called the mound, that had a sign in front it that it was a building that it was the only building on campus that General Sheridan burned to the ground in 1864 that wasn’t rebuilt.

I guess General Sheridan thought as highly of the University of Alabama as most LSU fans do.

But seriously, one of you people needs to get me a gumbo recipe.

Don't remember it

I like to think they actually burnt down their campus so they could a) get insurace money and, b) make a lot of cool historical references.

Everyone knows Sherman was in Georgia in ’64, but not everyone knows where Sheridan was in in ’64. So they just randomly picked some guy whose name kinda sounds like “Sherman”.

So that we all might learn something new everyday....

[University] president Landon Garland lobbied and received approval from the legislature in 1860 to transform the university into a military school. As such, many of the cadets who graduated from the school went on to serve as officers in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. As a consequence of that role, [Filthy Stinking Dishonrable -ed.] Union troops burned down the campus on April 4, 1865, which was unrelated to Sherman’s March to the Sea several months earlier and farther east

After Alabama seceded from the Union the following year, it became the "West Point of the South," supplying the Confederacy with 7 generals, 25 colonels, 14 lieutenant colonels, 21 majors, 125 captains, 273 staff and other commissioned officers and 294 private soldiers.

On March 29, 1865 Gen. John T. Croxton with 1,500 cavalry men left Elyton (Birmingham) with orders to proceed directly to Tuscaloosa "to destroy the bridge, factories, mills, university, and whatever else may be of benefit to the rebel cause."

The cadet corps under its commandant, Col. James T. Murfee, marched down University Boulevard and met Croxton’s forces in a brief engagement just east of the intersection of University Boulevard and Greensboro Avenue. Only one casualty was suffered by the cadets when Cadet Captain John H. Murfee, a brother of the Commandant, was shot in the foot.

According to historians, "The cadets averaged fifteen or sixteen years of age and were equipped with muskets of poor quality, while the [Filthy Stinking Dishonrable -ed.]Federal troops were using Spencer repeating carbines which were the best type of gun used in the war. Dr. Garland, realizing the fight was an unequal contest, ordered the cadets to retreat." The town and campus were now left to the mercy of the enemy.

It's a right of passage actually

Somebody spends a lot of time, writes a thoughtful post about something that interests them, and three comments later somebody says “bacon” and it’s all downhill from there.

FWIW, you almost drew an unnecessary “I tried it and it sucked”, which has been known to last for several days, and even spread to other blogs.

At least the civil war tangent was moderately educational.

P.S.: I haven’t seen Morelli’s Wife in a while. Can somebody tell me why I’m looking at pictures of Sam Grant, Jim Mora and John Adams instead of her?

Okay, you'll get an actual opinion

It’s all right, but I don’t like this part:

In addition to the conference champions, five “at-large” entrants would be included based on the composite rankings from the AP, USA Today, and Harris Interactive polls.

I don’t like at large teams and I don’t like the polls.

and that matters in this situation how?

and I just used those 2 schools as it was the first group of teams that didn’t play each other that I could think of. Pretend that the strength of schedule was comparable.

by The JuggerNitt on Dec 10, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

I'm ignorant of tiebreaking procedures

And perhaps I should have said “generally opposed to at large teams”. This is a special situation, isn’t it?

"Andrew Jones....SEND IT IN, BIG FELLA!" - Bill Raftery, 4/2/09

by ReadingRambler on Dec 10, 2009 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

not necessarily

I mean as far as undefeated teams in the same conference not facing each other, perhaps, but what about something like the Big XII last year? It seems that there are frequent ties for conference champions (in conferences without title games) or division champions (in conferences with title games), and it isn’t that rare for there to be no clear, fair tiebreaker. It is a situation like that which leads me to think at-large selections would be a good alternative. Of course it would significantly diminish the importance of the SEC title game…but that doesn’t really bother me too much :-p

They could still keep it important by perhaps not allowing any at large teams to be seeded above conference champions…or at least BCS conference champions…or make a rule that they don’t get home field advantage (since it would be a bit unfair to the other teams to have to play a tougher team just because they are an at-large, instead of playing the Sun Belt champ).

by The JuggerNitt on Dec 10, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

It depends on how your

conference determines its champion. I left that up to each conference to decide for themselves. Some may have a championship game (i.e. SEC, B12) others may not (B10, Pac10).

And in that case I would guess the other unbeaten team would be one of the ‘at large’ entrants.
