Lions Limp To Finish Line; Win First Game (Yes, Ever) At Michigan State
It was awful, then glorious, and then you kind of wanted to throw up in the nearest garbage can. Through all the ridiculous long-range threes, gagged free throws, and some confluence of incompetence and corruption between the ears of official Ed Hightower, Penn State left East Lansing with a win for the first time.
And suddenly, dancing in March goes from an outside shot to what could only be characterized as "a definite possibility".

The poll is no contest
Hightower gets a gameball in Izzo’s locker room, and should get his jersey retired at the end of the season.

I think their real MVP was the
carnival rims they snuck in there for all the free throws at the end…
and yes, I agree
the rims definitely deserved a fair share of MVP mention.
Brilliant (I’m seriously in no way being sarcastic) strategy by Izzo to start fouling with like 4 minutes left

What's the story with Hightower?
I didn’t see the game.
Gotta get cable.
"The sea was angry that day, my friends." G. Costanza
Hightower
Called a phantom technical on Cornley after he made a basket early in the 2nd half. Then especially late in the game, Penn State would get mugged underneath, and they’d be called for traveling or some garbage.
Let's Go State!
I have no idea what the T was for. I can only assume he was jawing at one of MSU’s players, as nothing else makes sense at all.
Seems to be a weird trend with certain refs always calling Ts on the same people. Cornley’s gotten hit twice in a row by Hightower, and Izzo has four in the last five with Maracich (and maybe one a season with anyone else).
Not sure I’d agree on the rest of it, though. The travel call underneath surprised me (I thought it should have been a jump ball, as I’m pretty sure an MSU player had a hand on the ball at the same time and when a player jumps but cannot release the ball due to an opposing player blocking it, it’s supposed to be a jump ball), but there weren’t any other calls that stood out as strange to me.
Unsung hero
Andrew Jones came up big with 12 points and 9 rebounds. And when the game was on the line he was the only guy that could make a free throw. That’s why we won the game.
Couple streaks we kept alive. We’re still undefeated when Battle, Pringle, and Cornley score in double digits. And we’re undefeated when we’re leading at halftime.

Andrew Jones could develop into a very solid player
He’s got a lot to do to get better but Jones has shown flashes of being a good inside presence and I’m hopeful for his development when Jamelle leaves during the non-conference next year. Gonna need to be a big contributor the rest of the way but it’s nice to see him making an impact

what about
Graham Zug?
May no act of ours bring shame
Got no problem giving Zug props when they're due...
But the basketball team if fighting their way out of the shadow of the football team. Battle put the team on his back with his 3 pointers from the concession area.

Congrats on the win guys.
All of a sudden the Big Ten is a tight race 1 through 5. My Gophers go to East Lansing next. But someething tells me Sparty is going to be looking to take some anger out on somebody.

didn't see the game either
but all the complaints about watching PSU sounds like the typical ebb and flow of basketball. it also helps to have a team to root for.
I go nuts rooting for the underdogs during the Final Four, and I have NO emotional interest in those teams.
btw
is 509 comments the record for a BBall game? If not, it’s still amazing that I actually planned on watching this game instead of only catching games when I’m flipping through the channels. It’s nice to get my College Bball fix from the Nittany Lions.

World F#$king Champions
I don't think so
I think this was personal between him and Cornley. I’m sure he didn’t appreciate Cornley’s take on the TF against Iowa last week and the way he said it sparked him on. It seemed like Hightower’s worst calls were against Cornley. He’s probably been looking forward to this game all week. The technical and the lane violation were totally bogus. Other than that he called an ok game.

that's one of the most questionable things
is that a lot of his bad calls came in such a manner that looked like he was specifically targeting Cornley. Plus he just had some other terrible calls. Apparently if a defender is set in the lane, and the offensive player comes and runs into him, that is now a foul on the defender. Also, apparently if you are getting hacked at and fall down, that is now travelling. These are good rule changes to know, to take into account for the rest of the season.

The charge
The non-charge call on Pringle was questionable. It looked to me like the MSU guy was going around Pringle and Stanley stuck his knee out to catch him. I wasn’t too uspet on that one once I saw the replay.

If this team can make foul shots, they could be dangerous...
was it just me, didn’t the refs really want MSU to win?
Well
I think Hightower wanted to send a message to Cornley. Other than that I thought the game was called pretty well. Battle got a gift on that foul on the inbounds away from the ball. He hooked the guys arm and made it look like he was being pushed. But it evened out for MSU b/c he missed both free throws.
Other than that we didn’t get any favors. It should shut up the MSU fans that claim we only won last year because the officials gave us 51 free throws. This win was totally legit and we even tried to give it to them at the end.

Hightower is bad...
but he didn’t single-handedly take away a win over the #1 ranked Indiana Hoosiers in Rec Hall like Sam Lickliter did.
That was a crime against humanity.
First win in Assembly Hall, now our first win at Breslin? Good year for the hoops squad!
Hightower still gets payed!! And I just happened to be in the strip club he went to celebrate in:

Mood around town
I was running delivery today during the game, and I can tell you that the mood around town was every bit as crazy as during a regular season Eagles or Steelers game. Everyone, even the girls apartments I delivered to, had the game on and were going crazy.
Just further strengthens my view that if we could be a regular bubble team, PSU will support basketball.

While it may not be there tomorrow,
the PSU win is the lead story on the si.com college bball page.
Okay, the article is more about MSU losing than PSU winning, but I’ll take it.
