PSU Players At The NFL Combine
Bumped, I added some links to enhance your online experience. And yes, eight is a lot. They might not all be selected, but keep in mind Penn State hasn't sent more than six people in the draft since ten were taken in 1996. -Kevin
I read this on Rittenberg's blog at tWWL, it was taken from the official list of players invited to the combine [full list here]. I was kind of surprised that Ohrnberger wasn't invited. I mean the combine is not something I'm crazy about and we of course have our pro day, but it is still good to know that we have a shot to have near 10 players drafted and a few more signed, something we haven't had in awhile. I really enjoy following these guys in the NFL, as I'm sure you all do too.
PENN STATE (8)
- Wide receiver Deon Butler
- Tackle Gerald Cadogan
- Defensive end Maurice Evans
- Defensive end Aaron Maybin
- Wide receiver Jordan Norwood
- Cornerback Lydell Sargeant
- Center A.Q. Shipley
- Wide receiver Derrick Williams
So, Kelly, Ohrnberger, Davis, Lawlor, Gaines, Sales will not be, not a real shocker.

Ohrny
I think Ohrnberger really hurt his stock against Iowa. Before then everyone was saying he was a sure fire draft pick, but Mitch King made him look silly in that game. I still don’t understand why Joe made that switch.

I also don't see why they made that switch
but regardless, Mitch King will make any O-lineman look silly

I am surprised that Sargent was invited, he never seemed like much of a stand out.
But since he is a corner maybe that is why he has been invited.
We just needed a couple players, a couple people to buy in to the fact and we were able to do it. --A.Q. Shipley

He performed really well in his all-star practices.

And he had stats
Sarge picked off four passes this year. I don’t think Davis had four in his career.

And "measurables"
He’s fast and athletic, and corner is huge need position, they’ll take a look at anybody who they think can play it.

He really did improve greatly this season.
It was like night and day compared to 2007.

You're right
It seemed like whenever we saw a blown coverage it ended with Rubin and Scirrotto glaring at #1. I can’t recall Sarge blowing an assignment this year.

Kelly
Anyone remember if RObbie Gould was invited? Cause he was mr unrealiable for us, now he’s doing pretty well for himself in the NFL. So I would bet Kelly will get the same chance.

Gould radically overhauled his kicking mechanics when he got to the NFL. In his first year (still kicking the same way he did in college) he struggled.
After the overhaul, his kicking dramatically improved. So that’s the reason for the switch, which does call into question the kicking coaches at Penn State.

That brings up a question I've had for a long time
Who are the kicking coaches?

Not everyone goes to the combine
as you mentioned – there’s the pro day. a lot of kids wait to perform on their own turf – usually if you’re trying to “up your stock,” however, you go to the combine.
