Hoops team could be ranked next week!

I was looking at the coach's poll which just came out and we received 13 votes.  Looking at the schedule this week we have Michigan and Wiscy at home.  I think that we can and will win both of those games to push the record to 19-5 and 8-3 in conference.  I think that will finally get us ranked in the Top 25.  I know that ultimately it doesn't mean anything but I think it shows that this program is progressing and improving.  It's something Ed can point to when he walks into a kid's house and tries to convince him that playing in Happy Valley is best for him.

Question....when's the last time our Men's BBall team was ranked?  Were we ranked during the 2000-01 season?

Exciting times!  WE ARE!!!!!

I doubt

that we were ranked in 2001. We had a 6-10 conference record that year. One of the worst all time for an NCAA selection team.

We were probably ranked in 1995 or 1996 whatever year it was we made the tourney. We were a 4 seed I think and we lost to Marquette.

1995-1996

I want to say we were ranked as high at #9 back in ‘95-’96. I know we got upset by Arkansas in the first round.

I thought at the end of the year we were ranked in 2001 if memory serves me

It probably doesn’t, stupid memory.

We just needed a couple players, a couple people to buy in to the fact and we were able to do it. --A.Q. Shipley

We were

After the tourney and the Sweet Sixteen run, we ended up ranked in the final poll of 2000-2001, at either #24 or #25.

I’m pretty sure the last time we were ranked during a season was the 1995-96 season, and we even got to the top 10 that year. I don’t think we’ve been ranked since.

Wow, Top 10...

I would have thought I could have remembered that. I do remember beating UNC and getting to the Sweet 16. Too bad we couldn’t build on that momentum. Of course we had Mr. Casual, Jerry Dunn, blowing off recruits and eventually losing control of his team – then his job.

In looking up the history of the Men’s BBall Coaches, I saw this
"Hugo Bezdek 1918-19 11-2 Coached PSU football, MLB Pitt. Pirates and PSU Basketball in one year "

Also, Jerry Dunn was the first coach

in the history of PSU Basketball to leave with a losing record. Ed needs some big years to dig out of the hole of his first 5 years. Result of Big10 vs. Atlantic 10 competition – Parkhill knew when to get out.

That Bezdek Guy will come up a bit later...

…you’ll all see. He is just as fascinating as Paterno.

That would be huge

Even if we just poked into the rankings for a week. Just to get that brief exposure would plant a seed in the minds of the national media and the selection committee.

Just to get that brief exposure would plant a seed in the minds of the national media and the selection committee.

That’s the most important part at this point. The difference between ranked 25th and 26th all season long is a lot bigger then you’d think. Having that little number next to PSU during televised games could mean the difference

I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

Also receiving votes...

Penn State finished with a #25 ranking in ‘00-’01
They were 7-9 in conference that season. At 6-10 there’s no way they would have been selected to dance.

This team will absolutely need to go 2-0 this week to crack the top #25…Michigan and Wisconsin…while struggling mightly recently, will be no small task.

Has anyone else ever wondered why we can’t say ’we’re ranked #32’, if we’ve recieved the 32nd most votes in a poll? How come we can only say “we’re ranked” if we’ve been one of the top 25 vote getters?

Not that promoting “we’re #32” is all that cool…but…well…we are!

Sorry

facts were a little off but I was going off of memory at work. Was in like 10th grade when we were ranked so sorry I “misremembered” :-)

AP has us at 29th

If we win both games this week then we definitely should crack the Top 25. The AP is giving us more respect than the coaches at this point. We got 37 votes from the AP.

PSU Hoop dreams

We will be ranked in the top 25 before the end of the season. The best part about this season is that it looks like we are going to the NCAA tourney. Great job to Ed and the players!
