Simmons vs. Jones: who ya got?

but I think Jones wins out on the “bigger douche”. Perhaps Simmons is more of a “turd sandwich”

Anyway, I voted for Simmons simply because I haven’t read enough of Jones’s columns to form an opinion.

an entertaining writer. I haven’t really read his stuff for 2 years or so. He is a self professed homer so I take any Boston sports talk with a grain. I always did like his pop culture infusion. I think a lot of his stuff was very relatedable as well.

David Jones is and OSU grad that many PSU fans brand as a douche simply because he doesn’t tell us what we want to hear. I have no problem with him having some harsh words for PSU. The fact hat Jones is not a PSU yes-man makes him a bigger Douche bag in this head-to-head.

I don’t like either.

There’s a lot of people out there who don’t like Joe Paterno — they think he’s a a-hole, they think his son is an even bigger a-hole… That’s Jones’ demographic right there.

For example, here’s a good way of cutting it…

the Rose Bowl, now most people on this board think we got beat bad in the cover-3, and our offense had just enough misteps to not allow a comeback. People look at the field goal toward the end of the game and say ‘well we NEEDED a field goal at some point’ They look at the slow-and-steady offense as just us not panicking and executing a gameplan, never giving up.

Now, Jones’ demographic, those people look at the USC game and say look, we got beat bad early, but we were in that game in the 4th quarter. When the USC kids are celebrating way too early like they’ve already won, THAT’S when you kick an onsides kick and steal the momentum THAT’S when you go for broke and go for the jugular. But we played Joe Paterno football, we NEVER on-sides kick, we ALWAYS play for the field goal even when we’re down 17 late in the 4th inside the 20. Joe Paterno football is built on this stubborn old man doing things his way no matter what. 4th and inches inside the opponents 10? field goal. Joe doesn’t care if he wins so long as he does things his way.

I’ve read Simmons since freshman year of college- I think he peaked a few years ago (though having two kids probably cuts into his pop culture/sports time a bit). I’m not a Sox fan (far from it) but I love his book- those articles are some of the most genuine from-the-view-of-the-fan things you’ll find in MSM. Are there bloggers that do it better than him now? Yes. But if you look at him compared to Rick Reilly…well, yeah.

Jones on the other hand…yeah.

So far, Millzners is huggin it out by himself with best points put forth.

You need people like Jones who will call out the program/Joe.

Does he go out of his way to make a point, yes.

When you only get one side of the picture all the time, its tough to tell reality. He is right more than wrong, I like him but read w/ grain of salt.

Simmons is a dick for a number of reasons, and quite frankly, I’m astounded that most people on here are unfamiliar or unaware how big of a douchenozzle the guy is.

My beef with him is that he’s a homer hack. His whole shtick is mostly writing about Boston teams, which is fine if you’re writing for a Boston newspaper or to a largely New England audience. But this assclown writes for an international audience. And since 99% of that audience aren’t some chowdah eatahs, we don’t really give two shits what he thinks about Tom Brady’s haircut or Belichick’s hoodie. There is a world outside Boston/New York, and I take offense to the fact that Simmons doesn’t even attempt to write to us. And I take even more offense to the fact that some of you don’t care, and actually enjoy his New England knobjobbing.

Simmons gets paid exorbitant amounts of money to do a job that the guys at BSD do…but he does it in a much more half-assed, unoriginal, amateurish way. And the final kicker is that he does it for the most evil, biased, unprofessional sports media giant ESPN. Everyone associated with tWWL is suspect. Well, everyone except Erin Andrews. She could club a baby seal while eating a fetus and she’d still get a pass from me.

Mostly, because I don’t give a shit about Simmons’ opinion on things, as he doesn’t touch college sports. He just blogs about his homo friends, Boston, his wife, Boston, 80s movies, and Boston.

Jones, on the other hand, is a dude who writes inflammatory pieces to rile up whoever he can rile up. And, he completely changes his stance on things depending on which way he thinks will get him more of a response. Plus, his “inside sources” on the Board of Trustees are laughable, yet that’s what he continues to cite as his main source of “inside” info. Basically, he just guesses, and figures he’ll eventually get it right about Joe, Graham, and Curley. Because every time so far, he’s been wrong.

Runner-up is Tailgate Shogun, who properly cited Jones’ made-up sources as totp reason for his own brand of shite.
