NFL Combine Update
I'm sitting here watching the NFL combine. And yes, I'm drifting in and out of sleep as I do, but A.Q. Shipley is working out for the scouts. He did 33 reps on the bench press which only four other guys were able to top.
In the 40 he ran a 5.19. But what was interesting was the comments by the announcers. They are saying if you talk to any scout they hate Shipley because he's only 6'1" and he has the shortest arms in the combine at only 29.5". But if you talk to any offensive line coach they love him because of his film. The commentator said if you pop in the Rose Bowl tape by the end of the game you can see that Rey Maualuga had absolutely had enough of Shipley. They are saying Shipley will be a starter in the league.
The NFL Network lists Shipley as the #4 center in the draft.

In general
I think the 40-yard dash time for offensive linemen is one of the funniest things in sport. What in God’s name do they need to do that for??? If Shipley ran a 4.90 would his stock rise? I can think of ONE instance where a center would be expected to run that distance: a D-lineman picks up a fumble or gets a rare INT, and gets into a footrace with an O-lineman to the goalline. How many times would that happen over a typical 10-year career? Twice?
downfield blocking
especially on QB scrambles
granted it is ridiculous to expect them to be fast, and it isn’ tlike they’ll be doing that whole distance, so really the shuttle or other agility/quickness drills would be more relevant, but you would still prefer speed over being slow (all other factors equal)

True
I think they look more at his running motion than anything. Is he fluid in busting down the line or is he really working hard and huffing and puffing at the end. Does he look like an athlete? Or does he look like jello in spandex?

I have no doubt
AQ will be a long time starter in the NFL. Steelers could use him. Nice 2nd day pick

Look at that. It’s like a ran a 3.9/40. I’m absolute perfection…
What kills me about every league draft
Is the numbers game. So what that he has stocky arms, if he can play he can play. I don’t think Charles Barkley struggled with stocky arms and being only 6’4 as a power forward.
Hate it too...
Every year, same shit: “up-sides & down-sides”…prognosticator hype & spin on the draftees to sell & achieve “hits” etc… We live with it, we read it, it’s identifiable…we see thru it too!
The more I think on STU Boy’s post, it is occurring to me that every year there are players that are identified as not having ideal size for their positions. There are players that HAVE ideal size – with an equal amount of hype…and never live up to the expectations!!!
I can’t help but think that “haves” and the “have-nots” might actually be EQUAL in number. Well, maybe not equal – but closer than the casual observer thinks. This metric may not be worth the proof; but again, players like A.Q., Project Mayhem, Royster…could be compared to the Emmitt Smith’s, Darren Sproules, Doug Flutie’s and Zack Thomases of the NFL world. Not the perfect size; but you cannot replace heart…you obviously cannot measure it…and most of the provibal experts are at a loss with the intangibles that you cannot place on a graph or a spreadsheet to track. Too bad for them. It’s the “stars” that these players carry inside of themselves that make THE difference…they do not need them “pinned” on them. A coach can’t have 11 of these guys on the field at the same time; but damn straight he wants them in that nucleus…

I heard
That Deon Butler just ran a 4.2. My combine addicted roommated just told me.
That is amazing.
He walked on. How did this kid get passed on coming out of high school?
More impressive........
was the pass route he ran during the drills. He really looked fast and quick out of the breaks. I think I am pretty hard on PSU, but he honestly looked like one of if not the best receiver on the field in the drill.
Eric Watters Atlanta, Ga.
I watched
Butler run that 4.26… I’m curious to see his 2nd time. Does he have to run again? I wouldn’t.

Norwood
4.57 looked like his hammy still bothering him

Missed this extra comments here
But I put up a screenshot of Butler’s time on the front page.
Williams was slow in his first run, similar to Norwood’s time.

Why does height really matter for an O-lineman
other than that he can potentially put on more weight/muscle? Wouldn’t there be some advantages to a short center (though perhaps it could go both ways).
QBs wouldn’t need to be as tall to see over their line
easier chance for an RB to leap over the line into the endzone
lower center of gravity for more leverage
shorter reach could be a problem, but it isn’t like O-linemen are able to reach outwards and use their arms/hands legally anyway
