Penn State: A Destination Job
SI's Andy Staples calls PSU a destination job, one of the most attractive and desirable jobs in College Football.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/andy_staples/02/23/destination-jobs/2.html
As you can expect, this list consists of the traditional powers of CFB. Initially I was a little surprised that Georgia made the list over Tennessee, although after thinking about UT's poor record last year and their lack of a big-time name in the coaching search this year, it makes sense.

Salary
“Hopefully, after Paterno retires, Penn State’s administration won’t try to get the same discount and miss out on the best candidate.”
I couldn’t agree more. If Bradley/LJSr/whoever else in house is the answer, that’s fine. Pay the man the money a school like PSU deserves to pay.

I agree
We’re lucky to have a coach like Joe Pa who doesn’t demand a high salary, but if we want to compete for the best coaches, we’ll have to compete on salary as well.

When it’s time, I think that this job will be one of the most sought-after coaching positions in the country. Few places have the combination of tradition, success, and location that PSU does. There will also be a lot of very high-expectations — we have something like 4 of our last 5 coaches in the NCAA HoF.

Further proof
that SI has a pro-Penn State bias (perhaps as an intentional thing to counter tWWL?). I don’t mind it, either.
Also, I may have misunderstood what they were trying to accomplish, so perhaps they were taking into account that ND and Michigan just had recent big-name hires, but I don’t see how PSU would be a bigger destination for a coach than either of those places.

Funny, but....
…..scUM and ND may have coaching changes before Penn State….
Don’t forget that PSU has as great of facilities as any other place in the nation, with the exception of Oregon.
WE ARE.......PENN STATE!

Oregon
Phil Knight has probably given a quarter billion dollars to Oregon, his alma mater.

Nike was started at Oregon
it was actually started as a running/track shoe company by Bill Bowerman and Steve Prefontaine. That’s ironic because I haven’t found a pair of Nike running shoes I like besides the miler. More or less, Oregon gets a sh*tload of money from Nike and Nike itself has state of the art facilities at its headquarters, which is near the campus

Common misconception
You must have seen the HBO movie “Pre.” The company was actually started by Bowerman and Phil Knight. Prefontaine came years later when Bowerman made his waffle shoe, and just happened to be a very successful runner for Bowerman. Bowerman sold his portion and now it is just Phil Knight reaping the massive rewards of child slave labor in third world countries.

Your Right
“Pre” and a Steve Prefontaine book is where I got the info. My understanding was the company was started on Bowerman’s and Pre’s waffle shoe idea. Thanks for clearing that up

Well
It’s not like there isn’t a ton of Nike money flowing around Penn State. Penn State was one of the original three “Nike Schools”, back when it was cool, and we’ve been on board the entire time, and I don’t suspect that the Nike corporate relationship is going anywhere anytime soon.
Further, a lot has been made about Phil Knight contributions to Oregon State, and T Boone Pickens contributions at Oklahoma State, but where the payoff? Oregon does not have better facilites than Penn State, they are comprable, and better than they would have otherwise, but I’m pretty sure they are not better. There is really only so much one guy can do, even if he’s a billionaire.

It's kinda apples and oranges
I’ve only seen each stadium + fan facilities, not the weight rooms etc., but as for an analogy, Oregon comes across as a shiny new Japanese sports car with all the gadgets. PSU is a Hummer covered in mud. Each is going to appeal to a different mind set.
I don’t know about better or worse, but from what I’ve seen Oregon has very, very, nice facilities. They ooze money and high-tech, and look newer and better than PSU’s. They put U-Wash.‘s facilities to complete shame, and I don’t think its coincidental that Oregon has ascended while UW has fallen off the face of the earth (which makes me happy since I get to listen to their alumni whine all the time on the radio).
Do I know what rhetorical means?

Apples and Oranges?
Yes.
But where are the Confrence titles? Zero. BCS wins? Zip. BCS Trips? Nada.
Seems to me that it’s all flash, and no substance.

When did Oregon start getting Nike money?
Besides 1994, Oregon won a championship in 2001 and a 3-way tied co-championship in 2000. Their BCS Win came in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl. (I know the 1995 Rose Bowl was a Bowl Coalition Trip, but it should be mentioned if it came after the influx of Nike cash.)
So Oregon has the same number of championships that we do, but due to whatever the tiebreaker was in 2000, they have one less BCS game than we do.

Is Mark Parker still at Nike?
Parker (PSU ‘75 I think) was/is the CEO of Nike. So we should continue to have favorable relations with the Swoosh! Too bad they can’t arrange a PSU/Oregon matchup in the coming years. You don’t suppose they had any influence on the OreSU game, do you?

A Ducks/PSU Nike sponsorship
game would be nice. Home and Home with some corporate money thrown in to juice the draw.

I didn’t think you could do ANYTHING with a political science degree. All mine got me was a six-figure grad school debt…

you had me excited about switching to poli-sci
until that last word. The elipses didn’t help my enthusiasm, either.
On the other hand, I do have a friend who dual majored in English & History. The joke was always that at least she’d know the context and the plight of the potatoes, and she’d be able to properly phrase the question, “Would you like fries with your meal?”. Of course, now she’s making a pretty good chunk of change, and more than most of my friends (though some of them are just now getting out of med school, and man, once that debt is paid off…)

Pepsi Money
Shouldn’t we be rolling in pepsi money?Did I suffer without coke for no reason?
by markpsu on Feb 24, 2009 12:14 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
hahahahaha
that’s probably the thing I hated most about PSU. The inability to get a friggen Coke on campus. I guess it was for the better, though, as I just drank juice in the dining commons (plus the 6-pack of soda back in the dorm). Of course, I don’t drink any soda anymore (at least on a regular basis), but man, at the time it was like living in a friggen desert.

There is building near East Halls
it’s run by the Federal Government, some sort of Agricutural Experimentation building, it wasn’t technically Penn State property, and they had coke machine. Of course that was almost 20 years ago now. Sweet Jesus I’m getting old.

My friends Dad worked in the building
I bought the coke there based on general principal. I was very idealistic back in the day. I was also late to class alot.

Destination Job
They’re right. Penn State is in the top 10 of best College jobs. There is no other team in the Northeast that compares. Joe has built a legacy that this or any future administration will be forced to maintain. The team may have some down years but the alumni and the entire fan base will demand a winning program or heads will roll.
As they say in Jurassic Park…" we spared no expense".
