Okay, more like 5.00. Whatever, I'm allowed one last weed joke at Evans' expense. Please post any combine tidbits in the comments. Aaron Maybin appears to have done quite well in the vertical jump, broad jump, and 20-yard shuttle.

Also, our old friend Chris Baker had a 35.5" vertical jump at 326 lbs.

If Chris Baker were here right now

I think I would fight him. Seriously. I would.

I'd have your back...

of course, then there would be two crumpled heaps wearing Penn State gear instead of just the one lying on the turf.

RUTS

For some reason I’m not convinced that is going to be your last weed joke at Evans’ expense.

For the next 30 minutes, it will be.

I have a commute, after all.

Wouldn't it be poetic justice

If Mo went in the 4th round to the 20th pick.

You think the Saskatchewan Roughriders will trade up to get him?

Good question.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/02/22/mmqb/1.html

Toward the end of the page:

My favorite story involved a defensive coach for one team asking Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis why they should pick him. "Tell me something,‘’ the coach said. "When is the last time a linebacker from Ohio State came to the NFL and was worth a s—-?’’ That shook the Buckeye out of whatever confident zone he might have entered the room in.

Come to think of it, he makes a good point. A.J. Hawk has been OK, but nothing spectacular, and he followed the likes of Bobby Carpenter and Andy Katzenmoyer.

There’s an Evans joke somewhere in there.

Top Five - Dropping Stock at the Combine...

Saw this list which included D Williams even though he had the flu (which it mentions). Bottom line, unless you’re 100% don’t workout – cause they don’t give a crap if your sick, momma just died or James Laurinaitis jumped on the pile late and broke your leg.

See the full top five here at foxsports.

I hope he was sick.

I really do. And if he was bed-ridden as that Adam Schefter post says, he should never have done anything except Indy besides interview and apologize for not working out. That’s it. Being feisty and competitive doesn’t improve draft picks at the combine.

Plus, if your client is that sick, don’t you broadcast that fact to anybody who would listen before the draft? As far as I can tell, nobody heard anything about Williams being sick until after those 40’s.

My favorite thing about DWill...

a quote from the analysis… the reason I loved that kid and why I think every team needs more guys like him on the roster

Team captain as a senior, vocal leader in practice and during games. Deflects credit to his teammates after big games. Stayed positive leader while not putting up huge numbers.

Yeah, that is clutch...

( Erik, by the way, I’m starting a new club & I want you to be the 1st member!)

there's always the possibility

that the people who needed to know he was sick did, and the media didn’t really get the memo until afterward. If that’s the case, I don’t really care if some writer thinks his stock dropped. The way things change in the blink of an eye leading up to the draft, a great showing at PSU’s pro day will outweigh a poor showing at the combine I think. At least I hope for his sake.

by jimbo2psu on Feb 23, 2009 10:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That *is* possible

But I just find it hard to believe that with the NFL Network being elbow-deep into the combine coverage that they wouldn’t have that information in hand.

We’ll see, I guess. Hope he performs better in Happy Valley, or he’s looking at a Day 2 pick.

it was all a clever tactic

"we’ve infecting Derrick with the flu to show that even during flu season he can still perform out on the field. Sure, he won’t be the fastest guy out there, but look, he’ll won’t be moving at a snail’s pace, either.

SI on Evans

Maurice Evans/DE-OLB/Penn State: Evans’ decision to enter the draft was questioned from the start and his choice looks worse today. Evans ran his 40s in 4.97 and 5.09 seconds. He later looked sluggish in drills. Evans weighed in at 274 pounds and only completed 17 reps on the bench.

Evans = Poor decision maker

I posted this in another thread too, but it looks like Evans was the slowest and weakest DE at the combine:

Just a lesson for the kids....

dope smoking makes you slow, weak, and a poor decision maker.
