Former USC (and Penn State) Recruits Live and Learn
Something for high-end eastern recruits who are fixated on USC (remember Vidal Hazelton and Broderick Green?) to keep in mind:
Hazelton has said he valued his time at USC, but he cautioned recruits to examine their criteria for choosing any high-profile school.
"The advice I would give kids is look at the position and look at the depth chart and the history of how they use guys," he said. "Don't just go to a school with a name. Look at where you're needed.
"A lot of kids get caught up in the TV stuff. 'That's where Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart played.' But you have to know it's a good situation that you're going into.
"A lot of it is . . . a business decision."

Unfortunately for a lot of kids
I don’t think they’ll realize this until it is too late. Not that being a backup at USC is such a bad thing, but if you’re gonna be practicing football for that long, it would be nice to know you’ll get to play a bunch, too. Of course, those fancy National Championship rings don’t say “backup” or “second string” on them, either.

lol
“National Championship rings” and USC in the same post does not compute, unless you tack on the disclaimer “if only they didn’t choke against their scrub conference schedule”.

yeah, I wasn't trying to specifically imply USC with that last sentence
just any of the numerous “football factory” schools out there

Good
These revelations combined with Pete’s handling of Mark Sanchez’s departure will hopefully show these kids that it ain’t all beaches, broads, and Big Ten beatdowns in SoCal.
I never really understood why a 5 star kid would want to go to a school where you’re buried behind four other 5 star kids on the depth chart. But maybe these kids have things other than playing time on their mind.

with some schools, like USC
they also seem to have a good coaching staff, and a lot of people I think look at it like preparation for the NFL. It is, as always, hard to tell if the coaching staff makes the players look good, or the players make the coaching staff look good (see: A. Morelli vs. D. Clark)

USC took a step back this year, IMO.
In the recruiting sense, at least. It seemed that they weren’t locking down the types of guys they usually get. Perhaps the luster is wearing off just a little.
Too late for PSU to get guys like Green and Hazleton, but let’s hope it continues.
(We did go head-to-head with them for Tony Hunt and won.)
