Talor Battle: "Shots From Less Than 30 Feet Are For Pansies."
Okay, that might not be a direct quote. However, because his shots against Michigan State need to live on forever, here's a look at Talor's "No....Yes!" shots in East Lansing. First, just before halftime:
And the second-half bankshot:
Yes, that's me kneeling in front of my television with a camera and taking pictures. Lo-fi for my people. Also, because I ran across it during searches for songs with "distance" or "range" in the title, some Pavement.

i enjoy this post
mainly bc even though i watched the game, I missed these shots because I looked away from the TV for a second during times I thought he was setting up plays instead of shooting from downtown.

Pavement
They rock. Saw Malkmus in concert at the Filmore. He’s still got it. I wish they’d get back together.

My cousin directed his
“C’mon Baby” video although he didn’t have really much interaction with Malkmus. Video is very cool.

booo Pavement
no really, they’re good. I sided with the Pumpkins during their fued in the 90’s, you know, before Rock died a horrible death.

Funny, I had no idea.
Even though that 90’s stuff is right in my cultural wheelhouse, I had no idea there was a Pumpkins / Pavement feud. If I had known, I would’ve listened to a hell of a lot more Pavement. The Pumpkins did some nice work, but Billy Corgan was such an overwhelming douche that it drove me away.
Pavement has always been one of those bands that I thought I would like, but never put forth the proper effort to find out. I have a small collection of random Malkmus solo stuff, which I love.

Blasphemy
Brighten the Corners was a great album. But really, they’re all good. I have all the originals and most of the re realases with the B-sides.

I was on the UCC (University Concert Committee)
back in my day sooooo I got to see the Pearl Jam/ Pumpkins/ RHCP show in 1990 at Rec Hall as an usher.
When the Pumpkins took the stage Corgan immediately went into this rant, swearing at the crowd “Don’t you little #$$# hrow any crap up here or we’re done”. Of course they played for 45 seconds and someone hit Corgan with a shoe. They quit and left.

It was one of those....
what the hell just happened moments, I can’t believe they left. But of course the ChilliPeppers were coming up next and everyone was witing for them to come out naked with socks on their dongs.

Feud?
I discovered Pavement after they broke up and I was too young to be following that stuff. That’s an interesting thing. I wonder what they could possibly have to feud about? The Pumpkins were great but the last album wasn’t that good, and riddle me this; Corgan’s band after the Pumpkins, Zwan had two original members of the Pumpkins, and now the current iteration of the Pumpkins has two original members. What changed?

Feud
Started with Pavement’s singer guy writing some lyrics about the Pumpkins after they toured together, “something something Pumpkins, something something but they have no function”. Pretty benign really.
Anyway, as is generally known, Corgan is a meglomaniac, and so he freaked out and started a whole fued with “indie rock” scene and Pavement in particular via intervies and stuff. He wrote Cherub Rock, the opening track on Siamese Dream, about the whole subject. Basically the track is about how indie rockers are just afraid of ‘trying’ to make good records so they make up reasons why their slacker-music is more riteous or more legitimate (as opposed to being a sell-out, etc.)
Anyway I love the Pumpkins because, well, they made some of the best music of the 90’s.
And to answer your question… The Pumpkins broke up after Machina, before which the bassist left the band, and after Corgan blamed it on the guitarist. Then Corgan and Chamberlin (drummer) went off and formed Zwan with some other people. Then Corgan broke that band up and blamed it on the new guys. Then he did a solo project. Then he got Pumpkins back together with Chamberlin and a bunch of new guys… Basically Smashing Pumpkins is Corgan and Chamberlin with some other people, the same way NIN is Trent Reznor with a bunch of other guys wearing eyeliner.
His new records suck because he produces them himself due to his meglomania, and the fact that no one wants to work with him (because of his meglomania). The reason the old records were unbelievably good is he had Flood, Allen Mulder, and Butch Vig producing and mixing them.
Sorry for the long post, work is boring the crap out of me.

While Corgan always seemed like a
dictator, I’ll argue that James Iha had a lot to do with their sound. Chamberlin was a core member, but was missing from the lineup for awhile for some multiple rehab visits.
Malkmus probably just chose Smahing Pumkins as a lyric becasue it rhymed with function (sort of).

I mean, sure you could argue that Iha helped define the band’s sound during the begining (Gish era), but Billy played all of the guitar (and bass) parts on Siamese Dream and most of them on Melloncollie. Billy always said that in the studio he could nail the parts better and in less takes than Iha, so Iha was pushed out of the recording process early on… I think Iha was very important to their live sound — but maybe that’s what you meant.
Yeah, Malkmus never struck me as someone who spent a whole lotta time on his lyrics, sort of a stream-of-conscious, whatever comes out of my brain at that moment that rhymes… Funny that something so stupid got Corgan’s panties in a bunch…

Funny.
One of my bands used to play “Cherub Rock” in the mid 90’s at Penn State. I was the singer. Never really knew the words.

hell I have no idea what he’s saying on most of that album, I had to look up the lyrics to figure out what he’s talking about.
