ACHA National Tournament
I'd build this up as something epic, but it's another year, another sport, another tournament to determine the national champion. You know - like all other sports. Oh... wait...
Moving right along, I'll try to keep updates in this post where possible as the tournament progresses. I know I'll miss the better chunk, if not all of, Saturday's opening round game (I'll be in Philly for the Flyers game), and should we get there, part of the semi-final game if they play at the 5:30pm time slot. Either way, I'll still post updates of the Icers games and the rest of the games in the tournament.
To make this somewhat worthwhile, here's my recap of the teams and predictions of how the tournament might unfold...
I'll repost the tournament bracket. I'll go down in order of when the games are played - top half of the bracket is in order, bottom half flips around a bit.
#6 Iowa State vs #11 West Chester - Iowa State is one of those perennial teams, and a/the founding team of the ACHA, thanks to Al Murdoch. Always stable, and you know you're going to get a good game out of them. WCU is an up-and-down team over the past few years. They used to be one of the doormats, and then they decided to start to play. And play well, they did. They've taken a slight step backwards this season, but they're still a strong team. And forward Jim Gehring is a beast - putting up 54 goals and 47 assists in the regular season. ISU won the only head-to-head they had this year, 7-1. Oakland University proved you can win with only one top scorer, but I think WCU's inconsistencies won't get them over the hump - Iowa State should take this one in a game where the final score doesn't properly reflect how close the game actually was.
#3 Delaware vs #14 Stony Brook - Delaware has put together decent teams, but only recently have they been a force to watch. The #3 seed is well earned this year as they didn't lose any bad games, and at least split weekends against top opponents. Stony Brook really came out of nowhere to steal a spot in the tournament. But it's deserved - they played decently, and came up with a couple upsets along the way. Delaware's depth and experience in the tournament will go a long way in this game, one where Stony Brook will keep it close to the end. If recent tournaments are any indication, this is the sort of game that could go to OT before Delaware takes the game and moves on to round two to play ISU.
#7 Rhode Island vs #10 Ohio - Easily the most intriguing match-up of the first round. A few years ago, this would have been a semi-finals match-up. Now as a first round game, it really magnifies the parity that is engulfing the ACHA. Rhode Island is in a middle group right now - not an elite team this season, but one that made very few mistakes and refused to be swept by a team. Ohio struggled early in the season, but turned it around in February, including a sweep over Illinois and beating #1 Lindenwood and #6 Iowa State to win the CSCHL tournament. With these two teams being old foes, I expect a real hard-fought game to the end. In times like this, I'll take the hot team - URI lost to Delaware in the ESCHL tourney, Ohio's been knocking off top teams left and right. Bobcats take advance to the second round.
#2 Penn State vs #15 Duquesne - Duquesne is in since they're #16 in the rankings and the CHMA champion. They're a decent team, but fed mostly off of a weaker schedule (thanks to being in a weaker league). And when put against tougher opponents, they couldn't win. That's not to say they can't pull the upset, but it's an uphill battle, and the hill is very steep. The Icers played some of their best hockey in January, but have seen multiple line-up changes for a multitude of reasons. Thankfully, the core should be healthy and ready to go for the tournament. The 13 seniors aren't looking to leave without a championship, so I'm not going to doubt their focus for any of these games. The Dukes are just the first step in their run for the championship - Icers move on easily.
#8 Liberty vs #9 Robert Morris - Robert Morris might not be the best all-around team, and they might not be deserving of their #9 ranking, but they'll bother the hell out of any team they play. They feasted on an easier schedule, and although they lost to the top teams, the games weren't decided until late in the 3rd period. Liberty is plagued with inconsistency - good one weekend, bad the next. Still, there's talent and experience on this team that cannot be overlooked. The two teams split the 4 games they played, each winning their two on home ice. Liberty made it to the semis last year before they lost to the eventual-champion Illinois, and that experience is the difference - Liberty wins in a tight one.
#4 Illinois vs #13 Central Oklahoma - Defending Champions Illinois had a solid start to the season, but crashed and burned in the second half. After being swept by the Icers, they finished the season 8-5. Doesn't sound horrible, until you factor in that 5 of those 8 wins were against ACHA D2 teams. Central Oklahoma didn't make much of a splash this season, and is likely in based on recent reputation. They struggled in games against Directional Michigan, Oakland, and Navy. However, they did split with Illinois in their weekend set at UCO back in October. Even though Illinois is on the slide, they've got the depth and talent. If Illinois gets into their playoffs mindset, this one should be a walk.
#5 Oklahoma vs #12 Kent State - Like Central Oklahoma, Kent State is in more on decent play in recent years, more than their success on the ice this year. Not that they're bad, but they haven't done anything to establish themselves as a team to fear. Oklahoma has had another solid year without much fanfare. They can blow out lesser teams, but it's their goaltending that really keeps them in the games. Oklahoma takes this one easily and prepares for round 2.
#1 Lindenwood vs #16 Penn State Berks - Being completely honest, Berks is in because they won a weak league with a soft schedule. Kudos to them for winning the games they needed to win to earn the autobid, but this year (their first year in DI) they're on the low end of mediocre. Lindenwood is just the opposite. Last year's runner up, they won 22 of their last 23 and are the team to beat this season. There's always the chance Lindenwood could look past Berks, but they destroyed so many teams this season, I think they'll still roll while looking forward to their second round matchup.
Recent years have had some bigger upsets than just the #10/#7 game, so anything is still possible. And now to quickly summarize the rest of the tournament predictions:
#1 Lindenwood, #2 Penn State, #3 Delaware, and #5 Oklahoma move to the semis. Lindenwood and Penn State move on to the finals. And that will be a good game that either team could very easily win. But if I had to make a prediction right now, I seriously think this is Lindenwood's year - they've got everything in place, and anything less than the championship will be considered an upset at some level. That's not to say the Icers can't beat them - they've played very well down the stretch, and we can match-up with them better than anyone. But it will be a tougher battle than some of the other recent championship games we've played.

First 4 games down
- West Chester upsets #6 Iowa State, 4-2
- Delaware holds on over #14 Stony Brook, 3-2
- Ohio downs #7 Rhode Island, 4-3 in OT
- Penn State wins easily over #15 Duquesne, 5-2.
In current action, Liberty is up on Robert Morris, 3-2 with about 10minutes left in the 2nd; no score in the Illinois-UCO game with about 13 minutes left in the 1st.

Another round of updates
Liberty controls play and then pulls away from Robert Morris, 6-2.
Illinois gets pushed by UCO, but pulls away in the 3rd to win 4-1.
In current action, Lindenwood is up big on Penn State Berks, 5-1, after one period. Oklahoma-Kent State start has been delayed. Apparently there was a serious CO2 leak that forced them to clear out both rinks once the Illinois-UCO game finished. My guess is that it was located in rink one – the reason why the Lindenwood game is still being played. Beyond killing the ice, there’s that whole dizziness/nausea thing associated with excessive CO2 exposure. Here’s to hoping they get that cleaned up soon!

Update on the current round of games
Lindenwood-Berks game is under suspension – game will be finished tomorrow. Oklahoma-KSU game will be played tomorrow as well. How/what/why (beyond the CO2 leak), I don’t know. And we likely won’t know until tomorrow because the ACHA does a horrible job of updating their website with real news. Regardless, it’s the right call – there’s been reports of both fans and players complaining of headaches, dizziness, and nausea.
So the first round is almost done – this is my first time in 6 years of following the Icers where I’ve seen a delay, so I’m not really sure what happens. My guess is they’ll finish the first round early tomorrow (10:30/11:30 slots), And then play the top half of the bracket’s 2nd round and consolation games. Since Monday is a scheduled break day, I’d figure bottom half of the bracket would play at least their 2 second round games (they might skip the consolation games at that point). This way, nobody plays twice in one day and we’re back on schedule for the semis on Tuesday.

Great day in the Morning!
We have an updated schedule!
Currently playing is second round action of #11 WCU vs #3 Delaware. Game is still scoreless about 11 minutes into the game. West Chester completely changes my view about how this game will go (vs Iowa State being here). West Chester can play a lot better than their #11 rank. The two teams split their 2 games this season – each winning as the away team. If WCU keeps it close late, they could very easily pull the upset.
Sounds like some of the consolation games are being canceled – the announcers just noted that the URI-ISU game has been canceled. (Also sounds like it was a CO leak.) Also, looks like they’re trying to put all the games on Rink 2. Those games being played tomorrow – yes, it gives an advantage to the teams playing today who will get Monday as a rest day. But honestly – this used to be done as 4 games in 4 days. The break day will be useful, but it’s not huge. It’s 2 games in a row versus 3 games, and these teams (especially the top ones) have experience doing 3 games in 3 days.
Update on the Penn State game from yesterday, Teddy Hume did get the start in net as expected. Penn State started the scoring with a goal from Ryan Paradis in the 1st period. 2nd period was a back and forth affair. Duquesne would score first on the power play. Chris Cerutti would give Penn State a short-lived lead 8 minutes into the period, as Duquesne would score 90 seconds later. But Steve Thurston would put the Icers up again, with 6 and a half minutes left in the 2nd. The first half of the 3rd period was fairly quiet, but any hopes for a Duquesne upset bid were killed when Cerutti would get his 2nd of the game just past the halfway point of the period. Frank Berry would cap the scoring with 3 minutes left, giving the Icers a solid 5-2 win.

Of course as I type that out (plus other distractions), West Chester gets on the board first – odd-man rush forced Delaware’s goalie to get out of position, and that allowed an easy rebound goal for WCU. Almost done with the 1st period (about 90 seconds left) – if no other changes come up, West Chester is in a very good position. Delaware was in a similar position yesterday against Stony Brook and came back to win.
And look at that – there’s a change! It’s West Chester goal with just 1:15 left in the 1st period. Unless Delaware comes out with a jump in the 2nd period, we could easily be looking at an upset in the second round. Delaware was never down by 2 to Stony Brook, so it will be interesting to see how the Blue Hens react in the second.

West Chester still leading
UoDel is struggling, and not being helped by the fact that WCU’s goaltender has been playing outstanding for the second straight day.
Delaware just picked up a 5-minute major penalty late in the 2nd period. This really puts a damper on the Blue Hens’ chances.
West Chester scores with 6.5 seconds left in the 2nd period. This one is all but over.
UDel further hurts themselves by getting a highsticking minor at the end of the period – WCU will start the 3rd period up with a 3-0 lead and a 2-man advantage.

For those not well versed in hockey penalties
A 2 minute minor is the basic penalty – the penalized player goes into the box for 2 minutes, and their team must play down a man, 5-4. If a team scores on the power play (team with the man advantage), the penalty is over then and the player is allowed out of the box.
A 4-minute double minor means the team with the 5-4 man advantage gets two chances at the power play. If they score during the first two minutes, the penalty automatically drops to 2 minutes, and the second power play begins. If they don’t score in the first 2 minutes, that first power play is considered over, the second one starts automatically. If the team on the power play scores during this second power play only, the penalty then ends – there’s no reset like in the first two minutes. In essence, it’s two separate penalties strung together and viewed as two separate power plays.
A 5-minute major is completely different. The player goes into the box for the 5-4 advantage like normal, but the power play will go on for 5 minutes regardless of how many power play goals are scored. So yes – a team could score 5 power play goals on a 5-minute major penalty, and still be trying to score more. Obviously, the penalty has to be pretty severe to get one of these.
10-minute misconducts have no power play attached – the team just loses the player for that amount of time. A misconduct means the player gets to return in 10 minutes; a game misconduct or game DQ means the player is gone for the game – for stats reasons, they only get 10 minutes (the PIMs, or Penalties in Minutes, stat).
Minor details, a team can only go down to 3 players. If they have more than 2 players in the penalty box at the same time, the 3rd penalty will start when the 1st ends. Also, goalies and coaches do not sit in the penalty box (although it’d be hilarious) – they usually take a one of the players on the ice at the time of the penalty to serve that penalty.
And now you know….

Wow...
miss a few minutes of hockey, and everything can change.
Like WCU making this game a complete walk. 15 minutes left, and they’re up by 5. West Chester – say hello to the semi-finals. I’ll probably take a break from here to watch the Flyers game, but I’ll be back for more updates for the Penn State-Ohio matchup at 2:30. That game is going to get very physical and should be a classic.

Berry puts it in on a Zimmel pass. Possibly kicked in, but with no video replay, they can only keep the call on the ice. Choppy video, and bad video at that, so I can’t say yes or no. But a goal is a goal, and the Icers move on!

Lindenwood and Berks finished their game from yesterday. Berks jumped on the board just 10 seconds into the second period to make it 5-2. And that would be it, as Lindenwood would finish with 8 unanswered goals winning 13-2. Lindenwood faces Liberty tomorrow at …sometime…
Oklahoma-Kent State is about to start to determine the final second round game to be played tomorrow.
Again, URI and ISU decided to bail on their consolation game and just left for home. However, UCO and Robert Morris played theirs. UCO took the early advantage and never looked back, winning 5-1. Not sure where that “ranks” those teams, especially since ISU and URI left for home. It might have to wait until tomorrow to be played out. Still, we’re almost set for tomorrow, and then after tomorrow, we’ll have our final 4.

Quick update
Kent State is being vastly outplayed by Oklahoma, but only trail 4-3 after 2 periods of play. If there’s ever a recipe for an upset, this is how they start.
No action on Rink 1, so I’m left to assume that Stony Brook and Duquesne both decided to leave early. It looks like they canceled the final consolation game (Berks vs. Oklahoma/Kent State loser), so I’m left to believe that they’ll rank them based on final standings except for Central Oklahoma will get the jump over Robert Morris. Not sure how Kent State fits in there, but it’s all moot at this point anyway.

Oklahoma finally reaping the rewards of their hard work – 3 goals in the 3rd make it a 7-3 game with 9:36 left to play.
So tomorrows match-ups (assuming no insane burst in scoring from Kent State) will be #1 Lindenwood vs #8 Liberty, and #4 Illinois vs #5 Oklahoma. Still taking Lindenwood in a fairly easy win – might be close on the scoreboard, but Liberty likely won’t be up to the play of Lindenwood. In the other game, I like Illinois if only because Oklahoma didn’t really get much of a push today, but still looked shaky. Playing Illinois will be a completely different speed – Illinois in a close one.

Glad to help!
I do what I can, where possible. The guy who runs pennstatehockey.com does a really good job with the stats and usually a short blurb for each game, and he grabs Icers headlines when they pop up. (He’s also the announcer at the Icers games and has been around the team for over a decade, so he knows his stuff.)

Second round update
Lindenwood vs Liberty is going on right now. It’s actually in the 3rd period, and Lindenwood is leading 5-0 with 5 minutes left to play. So it looks like Lindenwood will move onto the next round and face West Chester – that will be one very interesting matchup. The top team that has completely dominated their opponents at this point against a team that is playing at a top level at the right time. They’ve taken down #6 and #3, and I would not be surprised if West Chester gives Lindenwood all they can handle tomorrow.
This also means the Icers will face the winner of the Illinois-Oklahoma game (starts at 8:30pm tonight). Neither team overly scares me at this point. Haven’t seen Oklahoma yet, but they’re a back and forth team. And we swept Illinois, and the Illini have been in a bit of a slide over the past 2 months, so they aren’t as scary as they were last year. Both teams are manageable wins.

First goal in the OU-UI game
and it’s the Sooners scoring first. But it was only a matter of time – they’ve completely controlled the action to this point, outshooting Illinois 11-2 with about 7 minutes left in the 1st period.

And then OU commits their first mistake - a penalty
and the Illini make them pay. Game tied 1 at the end of one period of play. Illinois will have 1:29 of power play time to start the 2nd period.
And that is the difference here – OU might be able to out-play UI, but the Illini are much deeper in quality talent, especially offensively. They weathered the Sooner storm to start the period, and still ended tied. Shaping up to be a good one. And hopefully they beat the crap out of each other and be dead for tomorrow’s game.

Missed part of the game
We’re now halfway through the 3rd period, with Illinois leading 2-1. Looks like the shots have evened out, but 9:36 is a lot of time for a good team like Oklahoma. Not done with this one by any means.

4:39 left, Illinois takes a penalty, OU gets another chance to tie it up late...

Going to OT, tied at 2
Icers still waiting to see who they’ll play tomorrow. Of course, this is really the best case scenario for the Icers – they get the off day to rest, while these teams will be playing an OT game, exhausting themselves more and more.

Halfway through the first OT
Illinois just killed off a penalty. Again – the longer this goes on, the better. However, sleep comes first, so if this thing goes too long, I’ll update in the morning.

End of the first OT
and the night gets longer, and longer…
OU had the better chances in that first one, but the longer it goes on, the more Illinois gains the advantage – they have a bit more stamina since they play on the larger, Olympic-size rink at home. It’s not very often we get a classic like this in the ACHA.

There it is
Illinois sends everyone home early in the second OT. This sets up a rematch from January, where the Icers swept Illinois at Penn State.
Again, I think the late night plays into Penn State’s advantage. But Illinois is still a very good team with some great skill scorers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Penn State tries to take a physical approach against Illinois early tomorrow.
So here are the semi-finals – #1 Lindenwood takes on the sleeper #11 West Chester at 5:30 pm. Lindenwood is damn good, but West Chester is talented and playing at a top level. I expect it to be a close one, with Lindenwood being happy to squeak out a win into the Championship game. The second semi-final is #2 Penn State vs #4 Illinois at 8:30 in a Big Ten slugfest. Two extremely talented teams, but I think Penn State is still playing better hockey. Illinois got pushed around for large portions of the game against Oklahoma, and Penn State has a bit more scoring depth to make the difference. The 13 seniors aren’t ready to pack it in just yet.
I’ll try to post updates from the early game as I get in from work. But I’ll definitely be around for the Penn State game (and depending on where the FanPost is, I might put up a new one for the final two unless this baby gets rec’d and sticks to the top). The best hockey is yet to come!

Tournament Mess
What idiot decided to play the semis and finals in the middle of the week. God, the NHL even tries to push potential deciding Stanley Cupu games to the weekends.

More on Stupid
Why is a national championship being played in a public skating barn like this? I realize that not every school in the ACHA has a rink on campus, but this is two out of the last three years they’ve played in some rent a rink somewhere off an Interstate. Two years ago the championship game was delayed by a junior game and now we’re canceling games because the rink wasn’t keeping up on basic maintenence?? Makes me want to puke.

As much as it kills me to do so
I have to be fair with what the ACHA is thinking on both points you’ve made. In terms of the scheduling, they used to hold it over the weekend – first two rounds would be during the week (Thurs/Fri), semis on Saturday, Championship game Sunday. I think what came up is that more people weren’t able to watch their teams since the early rounds were held during the week. By moving the first rounds to the weekend, and the semis/finals to mid-week, this allows fans (parents, really) of all 16 teams to make the weekend trip. There might be some “educational value” things in there too (less schools have to miss classes), but I’m sure fan attendance was the bigger issue. Good/bad/otherwise, it is what it is.
As for the rink location, they need multiple rinks and an area with lodging. For some odd reason, Ohio has a lot of these… Anyway, because it’s multiple rinks, that usually means the location will continue to run some of their normal operations to fill their rinks and continue to make money – can’t blame them, we’re just the ACHA. But the big draw is the multiple rinks – we’re able to play all 8 first round games and the 8 games on day two (4 second round, 4 consolation). I was hoping the “Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, John Carroll University Hockey and the Gilmour Academy Ice Arena” would put together a good venue – I don’t think anyone expected a carbon monoxide problem.
Just as a point of reference, the last 5 tournaments have been held in: Gates Mills, OH; Rochester, NY; Youngstown, OH; West Chester, PA; Bensenville, IL (hosted by Robert Morris).
That being said, I’m not a fan of the upper “management” of the ACHA. Updates are sparse, unless it’s them needing money. They own the video for the national tournament (i.e. they don’t let any other team do their own normal video taping of the tournament), and the live camera operators suck at that. They ask you to report the final stats in 3 different locations – final by phone, stat sheet via fax, enter all stats online. And the online entry system they use is the most convoluted, clunky piece of shit – it drove me insane! Oh, and don’t screw up – they send out a lovely email at the start of the season outlining the appropriate and inappropriate statistical updates, and the associated fines for not following the 800 proper procedures. (Not hard stuff, but still…) If it weren’t for a growing level of talent on the ice in the ACHA, I’m get the feeling the big-wigs would have run the league into the ground…
