A few

Miss State over South Carolina would be very nice. Also, I think if Auburn beats Florida, then loses to Tenn, they are both eliminated.

I would also not mind watching Kentucky and Temple lose so they do not have even come close to stealing a bid.

by STU Boy on Mar 13, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

not to be greedy

but in addition to those already mentioned…we don’t want a team like Duquesne or USC going and winning their tourney. Plus we need a team in a one-bid league like Utah St to win its tourney.

by mundyscorner99 on Mar 13, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Add Texas over Baylor to that list

Baylor is a good team, and we don’t need them to start taking down more top BigXII teams and possibly stealing that autobid.

Light Blue Fog

there’s a crap-load of UNC fans milling around the GWCC, haven’t seen any VT fans yet. it’s LOUD though. can hear people yelling school stuff with windows closed, on the 6th floor. (CNN Center) I haven’t ventured to the Atrium yet… Usually its the Blue Fog of Kentucky that invades us.

that San Diego St might have to beat BYU to get in.

Best Case Big Ten Scenario

Minnesota over MSU, OSU over Wisconsin, Michigan over Illinois, PSU spanking Purdue and getting such a big lead early that I wont be wasted by the end from drinking away my sorrows. (I’ll be wasted by the end from celebrating)

by RitterPSU on Mar 13, 2009 11:30 AM EDT reply actions

Not so sure

I want Michigan to win. They’ve looked impressive lately. We’ve already beaten Illinois twice, and now it looks like Frazier is done so they’re down their best defender.

I wouldn’t mind meeting up with Illinois in the next round. Sims really scares me.

by BSD on Mar 13, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

To clarify

I’m not so sure I want Michigan to win. I think we match up better with Illinois.

by BSD on Mar 13, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Right now they are hot, especially Sims the last month. I also am in the school of thought that if we don’t win this tournament, we should pull for the Spartans. That road win would look better and better.

by STU Boy on Mar 13, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Pull for the Spartans

And Pull for Ga Tech winning the ACC Tourney!! We might actually have a credible non-conf. win.

Why would we want Minny to win????

Some bracketologists have us ahead of Minny. I think we’re still battling Minny for a spot in the tourney so I don’t think we should be hopeful that they pad their resume???

by RNF18 on Mar 13, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point

We’re kind of conflicted in our interest here. On one hand it would be nice to win the B10 tournament and get an automatic bid. On the other hand, we have to remember we’re competing with teams like Michigan and Minnesota for seeding in the NCAA tournament.

by BSD on Mar 13, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

No conflict

We want Michigan St to win. Getting to the NCAA tournament is the key thing and MSU over Minn helps us out the most in doing that: (1) giving Minn a loss since they are our competition for an at large bid and (2) improving MSU’s record given that our away victory over them is a huge part of our resume.

Sure, it would be better for MSU to lose in terms of winning the BTT, but the odds of that are slim for PSU anyway, and if we can get by Purdue and Illinois/Michigan, I’d feel just as good facing Michigan St as I would any other team in the final (would playing Wisconsin or tOSU better?).

by Laaaaazzz on Mar 13, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I agree

Assuming Michigan is a lock already, I would rather match up with Illinois.

BUT THE BIG TEN SUX.

I just sent a lengthy rant to my old friends at Storming The Floor, here’s part of it.

In the last 10 years (going back to the 1999 tournament), the Big Ten has eight Final Four teams. That’s 20% of all Final Four participants. The others? The ACC has nine. The Big 12 has six. The Big East has four. SEC, four. C-USA, three. Nobody wants to acknowledge that. I can’t figure out why. But we suck.

Yes but but but

Our games are slow. And boring. We play defense. And we don’t score a lot of points. We are single handedly destroying the game and must be punished for it.

by BSD on Mar 13, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not the "old man yelling at cloud" type, but...

Honestly, if the Big Ten has a bunch of teams that legitimately project as #8-12 seeds, is that our fault? There are opportunities across the nation for teams like Arizona, Miami, Providence, Rhode Island, Kansas State, UNLV, and Creighton to seize their opportunities, and they shit them away. Not our problem.

Exactly

I think the fairy tailists like to see the Cinderella stories more than anything. Without them, the first two rounds are pretty boring. Seeing a big state school from a BCS conference make a run just isn’t as exciting as a small private school from the metro D.C. area.

Plus it’s just trendy to hate on the Big Ten these days. We have our own network. We make tons of money. We’re hijacking a college football playoff. Our commissioner looks like he could play the villian in the next Batman movie. Now we’re ruining the NCAA tournament too.

by BSD on Mar 13, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Championships

Seems the biggest complaints I’ve heard use the “one one championship” line of argument against the Big Ten. I think that’s a big oversimplified and using your final four point is just as valid. One should look at a number of performance metrics to get a good idea to compare conferences if they wanted.

Actually, if someone were really inclined, probably the best measurements would be (1) overall winning percentage of conference teams in the tourney and (2) number of times conference teams have won games they are the lower seed versus games they lost as the higher seed. the former stat would take into account all the teams in the conference and not get schewed by one or two dominant teams in a conference (i.e. is Conf-USA a good conference just because Memphis is a top program?). The latter would establish whether teams were overrated/underrated

If a guy shoots 2-for-16 on the night the writer says he was off or struggled. What about the defender who shut him down? Maybe he had something to do with it?

by The JuggerNitt on Mar 13, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, there's certainly validity....

Who has the more exciting regular season? It’s clearly college football over college basketball. I’m not saying that it’s a good enough reasont o not have a playoff, but regular season football games are individually more intense and interesting than ones in college basketball.

by Laaaaazzz on Mar 13, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Basketball

I always watch college bball, but I’m definitely following it closer this year. That said, I think it’s interesting to note that being a bbuble team is the most exciting position in the sport. When you are a fan of a team that is surely in, then this time of year (and much of the regular season) can actually be a bit dull as you’re really just biding your time until the Big Dance.

The big guys

Seems like the teams that have been locked in for weeks are still interested in competing for a good seed.

by BSD on Mar 13, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Seeding

Well, sure, I’m not saying their games are meaningless or that they aren’t trying. Obviously, they’d want to get better seeds and/or win their conferences as well. But if you are a fan of (say) Duke, do you really worry much about each game or how other teams do? A win or loss in any particular game doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things.

Meanwhile, for us, any win or loss is huge. And wins and losses by other teams can be huge.

Root for Wisconsin

Multiple reasons….

1. We played Wisconsin 2 times and tOSU once, so we get a (very marginal) bunmp to the RPI with Wisconsin winning
2. While both are almost certainly win, tOSU is closer to being out. A win by Wisconsin might theoretically push tOSU down to the bubble range. Wisconsin is more secure in their bid
3. Who wants to root for Ohio State?

Says we have a 41.2% chance of winning tonight. I’ll take those odds!

I hear ya

At my old house I used to call them out every other month. My internet would come and go for hours at a time. Every tech would come out and say I had the wrong kind of splitter and give me a new one or tell me I must have a bad wire running through my wall (This was a brand new house built in 2004). The next month I was calling them out again.

Finally I got one tech that was smart enough to check the signal coming in from the pole and realized the signal was below the standard strength. I said, “Ok, what are you going to do to fix it?”

Same thing as you. He shrugged and said there was nothing he could do.

They should move selection Sunday to Selection Monday

It sucks missing these good games while busting my butt at work. They could then bump all the games back a day.

I'm already freaking about scheduling

And we’re not even in the tournament yet. I’m going to be in a meeting all day Friday and on a plane to New Orleans Friday night. Then I’m probably just to be drunk on 64 oz. beers for the next 36 hours.

You?

I’m in Sacramento, CA on Thursday meeting with a client from 9-1 PST, then driving over to the airport to hang out. Then I get on a plane at 6pm.

Clearly I hope we’re in one of the regions that play on Friday, as my flight gets in at 6am Friday morning and I’m not going to work AT ALL that day.

Of course we do (did)

A run by Georgia Tech — assuming they did not win the ACC tourney — would have been a very good thing for PSU. Our biggest defiency is our weak ass non-conference slate, so if we could point to “see, the Georgia Tech team we beat on the road wasn’t bad” by them having a good run, it would have helped our cause. A win today would have been nice — they would have lost to UNC easily next game anyway.

by Laaaaazzz on Mar 13, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah, they were 2-14 in the ACC.

YOU ARE WRONG AND I WILL NOT ARGUE FURTHER.

I see what you guys are saying — they still had a lot of work to do before making us nervous about stealing the auto-bid. Still, I just want all of these non-locks for the tournament just go home and not screw anything up for us. Weird stuff happens during this time of year, you know?

I don't like it

Wiscy has a worse record than us but they beat us twice head to head. I don’t like it. I think that sweep will be held over our head if it comes down to PSU and Wiscy for a bid.

Lunardi just said he believes we've done enough now!!!

He doesn’t think we need to beat Purdue tonight. Of course I hope we do but he thinks we’re in either way as of moments ago!! He just said that on ESPN Radio!!

I know he’s not on the committee but this guy was 100% correct on last year’s bracket and he’s usually in the 99% on his picks!!

Yes sir!!!

by RNF18 on Mar 13, 2009 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

At the very least, we have a bit of a margin for error.

Considering the events transpiring elsewhere, we’re in a pretty good spot. Even with a healthy loss tonight, I think we’re 70/30 to make it.

I'm loving this

This is the perfect argument for a college football playoff. Look at all the excitement watching all these different games. Listening to the pro-bowl system people this should be completely boring because the playoff makes the regular season irrelevant. But here we instead of three or four schools hoping for a chance to play for the national championship we have twenty schools watching every score hoping their team can sneak in.

by BSD on Mar 13, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

BCS?

Isn’t this pretty similar to all the talk that revolves around the BCS rankings and how different teams winning or losing helps other different teams? I remember being pretty interested in the results of a bunch of other games this past year with PSU in the running for a BCS championship spot.

by Laaaaazzz on Mar 13, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

True

But not like this. We were one of the lucky four or five teams scoreboard watching by the end of the season. In College Basketball, there’s a few dozen schools all watching scores of teams on the bubble.

by BSD on Mar 13, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

What's the concensus

Do we want South Carolina to win (keep Miss St. from getting an autobid)? Or have them lose, basically popping their bubble, and giving a different SEC team a chance to claim that third spot (see: Florida)?

If you believe Lunardi

then we want MSU to win and then lose in the next round. It’s over so USC has lost so hopefully the MSU loses in the next round.

Recap on currently playing? Sure, why not...

Illinois up big on Michigan – indifferent, but better good than. bad
Xavier up close on Temple – good, but I’d like a bigger lead.
Texas up on Baylor at the half – good, hopefully continues through the second half.
Maryland up on Wake – not good. Here’s to a good second half from Wake.
Tennessee up big on Bama – good, if only because it keeps a surprise autobid from being stolen.

I mean look at their audience, a bunch of guys. It’s a win-win, the women get to wear more comfortable clothes and we get to watch.
